Katy B – Katy On A Mission review

by Juno Plus on 31.08.2010 at 10:10am
Artist: Katy B
Title: Katy On A Mission
Label: Rinse
Genre: Dubstep, UK Funky
Format: Digital

Female funky star du jour, 20-year-old Katy B is definitely on a mission. A graduate of the Brit School and Goldsmith’s College, London, she has worked with Benga, Geeneus, Zinc and DJ NG, sung on Magnetic Man’s “Perfect Stranger”, The Count & Sinden’s “Hold Me” and is swiftly becoming the go to vocalist for all manner of funky, R&B, house and garage tracks. With a credibility that belies her years, she’s garnered interest from across the board. Rinse FM have been plugging her hard, fabric have pledged their support, even The Guardian have dubbed Katy their hot ‘New Band Of The Day’. She’s also heading towards a top ten hit…with this song right here.

Taking Benga’s original “Man On A Mission” riddim, Katy effortlessly translates it into a shimmering slice of gently matured, pop-orientated beauty. “When we erupt in to the roo-oooo-oom / And hear the sub go boo-oooo-oom,” she sings, “so I sink in to the tune…” Her honeyed vocals are smooth, polished and oozing with class; lyrics are catchy, but cool; and the tenure of the track, the reason why it’s captured the heart of millions, is due to its downright danceability. It’s hard to tire of that glorious refrain, the throbbing bassline, which basks underneath those swooning, serotonin soaring vocals, those strong Benga drumbeats with their honed dubstep edge and simple repetitive low-end synth riff, which drives it along.

Zinc brings his crack house production skills to flipside “Louder”. Waves of rocking synths, whispering percussion and jacking bass undulate like a stormy ocean, as Katy’s cry to make it “louder…louder…louder…” heralds a progression in the music, a rise in volume and a shift in the tempo. Lyrics such as “As I buy another round / With my final twenty pound / It seems as if my money’s spent / How am I gonna pay the rent?” seem a little Lily Allen-esque at times, but with rather more gravitas and refined aplomb.

There’s no doubt about it that the next year is going to be a big one for our heroine. With mounting hype, attention from major labels, a coveted place on the Radio One playlist and impending chart success, the question on everyone’s lips is: what will Katy do next?

Disclosure – Offline Dexterity review

by Juno Plus on 24.08.2010 at 15:51pm
Artist: Disclosure
Title: Offline Dexterity
Label: Moshi Moshi
Genre: Dubstep/Grime
Format: 7", Digital

Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence unleash their debut release on the world via the illustrious Moshi Moshi imprint. This, for many of you in the know, is no mean feat, from the label who have brought us music from the likes of Kate Nash, Bloc Party, Hot Chip, Friendly Fires, Florence & The Machine and James Yuill. Even more groundbreaking, perhaps, considering the pair are but 16 and 19 years old respectively. So – what exactly can we expect here?

A woozy, synth-led, Joy Orbison “Hyph Mngo”-esque entree paves the way for A-Side blinder, “Offline Dexterity”. Glowing melodic progressions, tight beats and simmering percussion dominate the proceedings before falling into a mellower Blakean passage (as in James, not William…natch) with a jittering electronic pattern and itchy bleeps contrasting against the eerie murmuring of vocal snatches. Fear not, warm, harmonious waves of future garage soon return like sounds from another world, returning to a state of transient peace for the remainder of the track.

“Street Light Chronicle”, on the flipside, starts in bittersweet discord and ends on a similar note of anguished poignancy. An intro, which is almost cloying at times, with pitched up “CMYK”-style vox and shimmering atmospherics, is disordered by skittering, jazzed up Kimbie-like touches. It’s enticing stuff. Cooing SFX are paired with woodblock thwacks and a midway breakdown marks a conscious movement towards reflection and mellow contemplation, before the return of the clipped beats and glorious soundwaves from the primary section.

What Disclosure seem to have mastered is the art of a future garage sensibility, but with the heavyweight soundscape of an inimitable dubstep prowess. We hope this is just a glorious taster of more to come from these boys.

Kode 9: DJ Kicks review

by Juno Plus on 21.06.2010 at 10:56am
Artist: Kode 9
Title: DJ Kicks
Label: Studio !K7
Genre: Dubstep/Grime
Format: CD, 2 x LP, Download

The !K7 Records’ DJ KiCKS compilation series is marking its 15th anniversary this year. In that time the likes of James Holden, Four Tet, Hot Chip, Booka Shade, Juan Maclean and more have contributed a kick or two. But the time is now. And that time is Kode 9’s. The Hyperdub label boss has pioneered well…what has he pioneered?! This crazy blend of dubstep, grime, UK funky, broken beat and futuristic whatever-you-want-to-call-it, which has come to define a whole generation of music lovers. This consistently forward-thinking, razor sharp vision is brought to the fore in this mix which, he himself describes as “a snapshot of my DJ sets at the first half of 2010”.

Encompassing a broad range of styles and sound bites from across the sonic spectrum, the compilation kicks (no pun intended!) off with Lone- ‘Once In A While’, slowly moving through the newer wave of artists, as represented by Cooly G (with the as-yet unreleased ‘Phat Si’), Ikonika (the latest signing to the Hyperdub crew), Rinse FM’s Scratch DVA and Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman. Repping the old school are such notables as seminal dubstep trio, Digital Mystiz with ‘Mountain Dread March’, the legendary grimester, Terror Danjah, and UKG-turned-R&B/pop producer, Sticky.

Kode 9’s mix moves smoothly through some darker, heavier moments, interspersed with rhythmic synth-led sunshine-soaked riddims to some futuristic, bleepy moments such as ‘Spiralz’ by Zomby and dancehall flavours (see Sticky’s ‘Look Pon Me’). A 40 second interlude roughly two thirds of the way through acts a dividing marker, and the remaining part of the mix is dominated by a more brooding, bass-orientated vibe, full of the some of the UK’s finest – DMZ – ‘2 Much Chat’, Terror Danjah – ‘Stiff’ and Kode 9 vs LD – ‘Bad’ – before finishing with The Bug’s dark, growling ‘Run’. It’s not just a superb and evocative snapshot of where Kode 9 is at in 2010, it’s a panoramic of the contemporary musical landscape.

Review: Attacca Pesante – Make It Funky For Me

by Juno Plus on 01.11.2009 at 17:03pm
Review: Attacca Pesante - Make It Funky For Me

Artist: Attacca Pesante feat. Shae Soul
Title: Make It Funky For Me
Label: Digital Soundboy
Genre: Funky/Club House
Format: Digital
Buy From: Juno Download

Word on the street is that Shy FX has signed the South London tripartite collective, Attacca Pesante, to his illustrious Digital Soundboy label. The question on your lips, no doubt, is why?

Well, Make It Funky For Me, feat. Shae Soul (think sexy, soulful vocals over deliciously, dirty beats) is one of those delectably “funky” tracks with an infectious groove and echoes of R&B, soul, jungle, house and garage. Which, of course, means it is just crying out for a remix, and Shy FX & Benny Page, Rusko, and Roqwell & I Sancho oblige, with some smashing re-licks, bringing out the fresh-faced jungle and dubstep-infused flavours, with a pumping rave-tastic house version too.

It’s already received widespread support from Mistajam, Annie Mac and the 1xtra DJs, and will no doubt be a hit with any discerning dance music fan too.

Review: Hudson Mohawke – Butter

by Juno Plus on 28.10.2009 at 16:23pm
Review: Hudson Mohawke - Butter

Artist: Hudson Mohawke
Title: Butter
Label: Warp Records
Genre: Leftfield
Format: Digital, 2 x LP
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download

The keenly anticipated debut from Hudson Mohawke is one of the most arresting albums of 2009. It’s hard to put a finger on the young Glaswegian’s style – there’s traces of dubstep, hip-hop, R & B and electronica strewn across the album, without any apparent regard for established musical patterns.

The result is fascinating – a restless, out-of-phase ride that heads in one direction, darts to the next, before coming back again. Hud Mo – a former DMC champ in his teenage years – could be the dubstep/hip-hop equivalent of Warp Records stable mate Jackson & His Computer Band – himself a true master of glitchy, cut and paste electronica.

Review: Various – Body Language Vol 8 (Mixed by Modeselektor)

Review: Various - Body Language Vol 8 (Mixed by Modeselektor)

Artist: Various
Title: Body Language Vol 8 – Mixed by Modeselektor
Label: Get Physical
Genre: Electro House
Format: CD, 2 x LP
Buy From: Juno Records

Get Physical’s long running Body Language Mix series has by and large stayed true to the house and techno leanings of the label’s artist output, so it’s a pleasing departure that they’ve handed the reins of the eighth volume to their Berlin neighbours and renowned bass monsters Modeselektor.

In what can be classed as a worthy successor to their 2007 Boogybytes mix, Modeselektor effortlessly slip between genres and tempos, throwing in some classic Psycho-sampling Busta Rhymes amidst the contemporary wonkstep of Joker and Rustie, ingeniously treating tracks like “Kick Drum” from Felix Da Housecat and Boyz Noise’s “Nerve” as tools to bridge between sub genres and finding the space to allow the ubiquitous indie techno crossover track that is Animal Collective’s “My Girls” the space to breath amidst a sea of crunchy bass.
