In the grand scheme of electronic music, it’s only been a short while that Aaron David Ross has been actively releasing material, yet already in that time any thread of stylistic consistency seems to be rapidly unraveling. It’s an interesting notion that can be often viewed as problematic, suggesting an indecisive spirit and a reluctance to perfect one discipline rather than having a crack at many different ones, but then in the illustrious world of machine music and its infinite possibilities, fortune tends to favour the brave.

In addition to the recent release of Exo, Gatekeeper’s latest ambitious multimedia project hidden within their debut album, Hippos In Tanks have commisioned an equally uncompromising sonic artist to remix “Tree Drum” in the shape of UNO’s crazed debutant Gobby.

There was a lot of excitement when Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame) was drafted in to provide the music for seminal 90s shoot-em-up Quake, while Amon Tobin made an official release out of his soundtrack for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Of course, the roots stretch back further; it’s hard to ignore the influence 8-bit console sounds had on electronic music from the 80s onwards. Even deep house head Kerri Chandler released the Computer Games LP in 2007, paying homage to a key influence on his music career.
Gatekeeper ready debut album for Hippos In Tanks

Hippos In Tanks will release Exo, the debut album from New York based duo Gatekeeper this summer which will apparently be complemented by a “first-person gaming environment” (via Pitchfork).
