Not content with toasting 20 years of his important Axis Records imprint, Jeff Mills will soon grace us with a new entrant into his Something In The Sky series of spheric techno explorations.

MUTEK, the premiere festival of digital creativity and electronic music kicked off its 13th edition with a carefully curated programme including 130 performers including 3 world premieres and 15 North American Premieres. We sent Toronto native Steve Phillips on a road trip to Montreal to witness, among other things, Jeff Mills’ new project, Minilogue and Mathew Jonson’s live show, Clark’s unpredictable mayhem and memorable DJ sets galore.

Jeff Mills has announced an exhaustive double CD+booklet release charting the history of his Axis Records imprint.

It’s easy to go over old ground when interviewing legends. Discussing past glories, what it used to be like, you know, back in the day, is a trap fallen into by journalists and artists alike. With Jeff Mills, this is simply not a concern, so relentlessly driven is he by a desire to push boundaries, to create, to never stand still. Now 47, Mills has seen and done more than most, from his early days growing up in Detroit and his influential role in the nascent Berlin scene that still resonates today, to a life travelling the world to preach his vision of techno as true art. Aaron Coultate spoke to Mills to discuss his new film score, his ambitious projects for 2011 and taking Axis digital.

In news that will make the techno intelligentsia weak at the knees, legendary Berlin label Tresor is set to reissue a slew of landmark releases from the likes of Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Drexciya and Joey Beltram.
The third and final in the Drummer series in which Sir Jeff of Detroit pays homage to the patrons of percussion. As with parts 1 and 2, each track on the EP is named after a legendary drummer, and in this case it’s the jazz cats that get the love: (Art) Blakey, (Jack) DeJohnette and (Alphonse) Mouzon all get a mention on the a-side, while messrs Bellson, Jones and Bruford get named on the flip.
The resultant tracks, however, are anything but jazzy: this is Mills at his deep, dark, minimal best. There’s nary a synth in sight, with the sole focus being some rather menacing Roland 808s. Things kick off with “Blakey”, an incredibly tense, hypnotic track that rarely deviates from its chosen course. “DeJohnette”, meanwhile, offers a more pulsating, almost alien vibe, akin to some of his recent work on Something In The Sky.
The b-side features yet more contemplative work from Mills, most notably the closing track “Bruford”, named after British drummer Bill Bruford, a rock musician-cum-jazz drummer who once toured with Genesis (don’t say you never learn anything here). Here we see Mills coax some extra thud out of his 808 to great effect.

Artist: Jeff Mills
Title: Something In The Sky 02
Label: Something In The Sky
Genre: Techno
Format: 12″
Buy From: Juno Records
Jeff Mills has dabbled in a range of musical styles during an illustrious career – from the soundtrack interpretation of Fritz Lang’s masterpiece ‘Metropolis’ to his collaboration with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra – but never shall we forget he made his name with driving, unapologetic techno.
This release, the second on his fledgling Something In The Sky imprint, fits somewhere in between. On the a-side we see a couple of tracks (titled “Track 1″ and “Track 2″ respectively) that hark back to the Wizard of old: pulsating, underground techno. On the flip, tracks 3 and 4 see Sir Jeff’s love for experimentation coming to the fore, with two slices of melodic, spooky electronica. Here sonic pulses and spacey sytnths come to the fore.
The visual aesthetic to his new imprint is symbolic of Mills the man and artist. After all, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. We all know where Mills is looking.

Check out Abe Duque’s Hunter S Thompson-style video, taken while on tour with Blake Baxter.
In an eventful two-part video, the pair play at the (in)famous Panorama Bar, tease Jeff Mills, hang out in white dressing gowns at their hotel, talk about techno history and get menaced by ballerinas.
You can watch the second part of the video here.
