Win entry to the Leisure System XOYO takeover
by Juno Plus on 31.01.2013 at 16:15pmJETS – JETS EP
by Juno Plus on 07.11.2012 at 11:28am
Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum has been playing a lot of funeral music lately. Last year’s YouTube released “Swag Funeral” was exactly what it sounds like, the micro-trend causing “S word” repeated over Chopin’s Funeral March. Recently, a “Trap Funeral” track employing the same method has also been making the rounds during Machinedrum sets. Stewart is obviously taking shots at a few deserving (if not easy) targets in dance music , but approaching his collaborative EP with Detroit modular synthesizer aficionado and sleazy funky veteran Jimmy Edgar begs the question: what exactly is it these two are making, and will there ever be a funeral for it? Better yet, will there ever be a classification?

Jimmy Edgar – Majenta review
by Juno Plus on 07.05.2012 at 14:21pmThere are certain artists whose style you can always count on for consistency, and if there’s one artist whose style oozes out of every pore, it’s Jimmy Edgar. Ever committed to emitting a highly sexed take on electro, the Detroit native has slid from one electronic institution to another flaunting his wares. From his breakthrough releases on Warp to his last album on !K7, the framework for his crisp edits, glossy synths and suggestive (at the very least) vocals has remained the same, and now he makes a home for himself in the ever-broadening climes of Hotflush.

Review: Bloc Festival 2011
by Juno Plus on 28.03.2011 at 09:42am
Despite its many charms, Minehead’s Butlins resort in mid March is patently not Barcelona.Yet it’s here, out of season by the Bristol channel, that a musical movement is brewing to rival that of Sónar as one of the world’s premiere events catering for discerning electronic music.
Bloc, now in its fifth year, has grown exponentially since its launch and the line-up assembled for the 2011 showcase was, on paper, its strongest yet. In many ways it’s a canny move to book the event so early in the year, as it allows organisers to operate unencumbered by the goings on of the UK/European summer festivals that duke it out from June to August. It also offers actual beds to revellers, and those of us of a certain vintage welcome the chance to rest our weary heads somewhere comfy, rather than climb into a freezing tent and sleep for exactly five minutes before waking up to scorching sunshine/pissing rain (delete where applicable) and a parched mouth.

Jimmy Edgar – XXX review
by Juno Plus on 29.07.2010 at 13:31pmXXX is a peek into the kaleidoscopic musical brain of Jimmy Edgar. The Detroit native has touched on the influence of Prince and Kraftwerk in his formative years, but you could also point to his past signed to Warp, 80s electro funk, dubstep and the cosmic R&B pioneers SA-RA Creative Partners as musical references here. The prevalent aural mood is taut, hyper sexed future-retro funk as demonstrated on the shimmering talk box flex of “New Touch” (Chromeo could learn a thing or two here).
There are interesting sonic counterpoints interspersed throughout though. “One Twenty Detail” merges the electronic mind fuckery of vintage AFX with crushing dubstep kicks and “Push” adds further credence to Edgar’s interest in dubstep with a mutant hybrid of midrange bass tears and brilliant pulses of macabre electro. It’s Edgar’s willingness to change tempos that marks him as one of the better electronic contemporary music producers. “Rewind, Stop That Tape” sounds like a 21st century update on Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” whilst “Physical Motion” recalls the aforementioned Sa Ra Creative Partners in their formative pomp and includes some excellent vocal interplay between a talkbox clutching Edgar and guest singers Anet and Azealia.

Jimmy Edgar – Hush EP review
by Juno Plus on 08.07.2010 at 11:41amYou never quite know what you’re going to get from Jimmy Edgar, but chances are it’ll be worth a listen. Edgar is a true musical chameleon, seemingly able to turn his hand to everything from scattergun electropop and wonky electronica to slick Detroit techno, deep house and bumping old skool electrofunk. More often than not, the results of these musical experiments are impressive – even if the attached artistic concepts can come across as a little pretentious.
This five-tracker for Glass Table is classic Edgar. It sees him impressively flitting between various dancefloor styles across 25 indispensable minutes. As ever, the production is deliciously warm, slick and emotive in the best traditions of the Motor City. It’s Edgar through and through.
Lead track “Hush” sets the scene magnificently. Bubbling along at little over 100 BPM, it fuses tightly programmed beats – think smacked-out 80s electro fused with Larry Heard style deep house – with rich pads, off-key chords and jittery vocal samples. Much-checked Detroit newcomer Kyle Hall takes on remix duties, turning in a ‘Detroit Retro Metro’ version that roughs up the beats and adds some wonderful analogue touches. Thankfully, he loses none of the original’s understated appeal, adding some subtle Detroitian strings of his own.
Flipside “BThere” is just as good. All intergalactic atmospherics, bubbly low end wobble, reverb-laden vocal hooks and retro-futurist stabs, it’s the year’s slowest dancefloor burner. It might only be 104 BPM, but it packs some serious late night punch. Then there’s “JNS-2000”, Edgar’s contribution to the evolution of dubstep and future garage. Think Jimmy Edgar meets Joy Orbison, and you’re close. If you like the latter’s sound, you’ll love this – especially since Edgar’s productions feature authentic Motor City machine soul, rather than the Anglicised version peddled by Orbison and co. There’s more steppin’ out action on final cut “Vrandaktor Hell”, an unassuming chunk of contemporary Detroit techno that’s unsurprisingly old skool in outlook. The beats are crunchy, the synths cosmic and the bass pleasingly heavy – just like it was in the good old days.
