Various – Freerange Records presents Colour Series: Pink 07 review

Various – Freerange Records presents Colour Series: Pink 07 review

Artist: Various
Title: Freerange Records presents Colour Series: Pink 07
Label: Freerange
Genre: Deep House
Format: 12″, CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records (unmixed CD, 12″ sampler), Juno Download

Consistently strong purveyors of quality house music, Freerange are back with another of their colour-based compilations. The Makam remix of “Attica” kicks things off in style, as breezy drums bolster a Rhodes riff that sounds uncannily like the intro of Roy Ayres’ “We Live In Brooklyn Baby”.

Mr Morning’s “Slave” takes things a little deeper, using some expansive techy pads to build a huge sound around some minimal Afro-beat drums. Freerange head honcho Jimpster contributes a mix of Milton Jackson’s “The Rhythm Track” and the effect is similarly deep and devastating. Pezzner also gets the remix treatment, this time from Justin Martin, who peppers his slow-building “Brooklyn New York” with cut-up vocals and subtle, whisper quiet sirens.

There’s so much quality on show here, it’s hard to pick a favourite from the 12 tracks.     Two standouts though are Nikola Gala’s “I Get U”, which builds with a timeless female vocal loop, and then swaps it for percussion to set the groove off perfectly. And closing track “I Wanna Love You” by Elmar Schubert and Vincenzo also deserves checking out – a heart-stopping slow Balearic number with a cloying vocal and tons of warm synth tones. All in all, another quality comp from Freerange.

Josh Wink – When A Banana Was Just A Banana Remixed & Peeled review

Artist: Josh Wink
Title: When a Banana Was a Banana Remixed and Peeled
Label:
Ovum US
Genre:
Minimal House/Tech House
Format:
CD, Digital
Buy From: Juno Records, Juno Download

Josh Wink’s fourth artist album, “When A Banana Was Just A Banana” was one of dance music’s most acclaimed albums of last year. This year, the same label, Wink’s own Ovum imprint, are releasing a remix album that includes work from a selection of the most highly respected producers around today.

Such was the popularity of the album that the Philadelphia acid don started being asked about the potential for remixing certain tracks. By the time several of his high profile producer friends had picked out the individual tracks they wanted to rework, Wink realised that this could make its own release. He then enlisted the remix services of other DJ /producers that he respected himself to take on other tracks from his album.

The resulting selection of tracks, which includes edits from Radioslave, Slam, Nic Fanciulli, Jimpster, Chateau Flight, Matthias Tanzmann and Martin Buttrich showcases a variation of styles but makes  a complete album when put together. Each of the top notch producers on this album has given their chosen track their own interpretation, making this collection as enthralling as it is impressive.

With impressive artwork designed by Parker Jacobs, this is the complete package. The limited edition vinyl even connect together to mark the fifteen years that Ovum has been around for. The release will also tie in with tour that celebrates the same milestone. More than just that though, this collection of remixes is so rounded and comprehensive that it is able to stand and shine as an album in itself, just like Wink’s original album.

Following on from our in-depth interview with Jamie Odell aka Jimpster, earlier this month, we’ve roped the Freerange boss into talking us through his top tunes of 2009. Unsurprisingly, there’s some stellar choices from the deeper end of house music.

Interview: Jimpster

by Juno Plus on 18.12.2009 at 12:49pm

Since starting Freerange Records in 1996 with friend Tom Roberts, Jimspter (aka Jamie Odell) has quietly gone about his business, developing a reputation as one of the UK’s best deep house producers. With an intimidating remix discography (even the man himself is not sure how many he’s done), and some fine original productions, it’s little wonder he’s been in hot demand in 2009′s deep house-friendly climate. Juno Plus visited his studio in the backstreets of Hackney in east London to chat about all things music.
