With a skeleton crew left in the Juno offices the week before Christmas, it wasn’t necessarily the best time for a mountain of records to arrive, but arrive they did, with a few long awaited gems making a welcome appearance.

While we could bask in the plaudits for a good job all round on the free Christmas seven inch we curated for the customers at Juno Records, laurel resting is just not our style. Monday will see the onset of a week’s worth of 2011 round-ups, lists and galleries which is no easy task when you consider the Juno Plus editorial team also has the hard job of listening to new records every working day.

Whilst all may seem calm on the Juno Plus website, behind the scenes chairs have been thrown and harsh words exchanged as the annual end of year list decision making dragged into the midnight hours. To make such matters even more complicated, record labels seem intent on releasing excellent new music as the year’s end draws ever closer.

The week here at Juno HQ was dominated by New York City – with two of its many music legends providing us and you with some illuminating features. On Monday we revealed an illuminating discussion that took place with house music ledge Marc MK Kinchen, whilst we’ve allowed enough time for the flour to settle on today’s brilliant cook & chat session with Liquid Liquid’s Sal P.

On any given week all manner of vinyl comes across the desk here at Juno Plus HQ: marble, paint splattered, clear, picture discs – we’ve seen it all. Or so we thought. Step forward Vakula with his 65th release of the year – and the first on his own Leleka imprint – which arrived sporting the above two tone vinyl finish which has had us scratching heads all week.

Things got a bit cheeky at Juno Plus HQ this week as we slipped out two rather fine mixes in a week when there wasn’t even a podcast due for broadcast. You can forgive us the indulgence when it’s a Halloween selection from JD Twitch and a 30 minute mix from the legendary DJ Stingray.

There was a distinct air of synchronicity about this week’s releases, with some of the best releases indelibly marked with the number two.

Next week the Juno Plus editorial team will be decamping to the Dutch capital as part of the annual industry throng that is Amsterdam Dance Event, and in anticipation Rush Hour served up a timely reminder of just how much good music is bubbling to the fore in Holland with a sampler for their forthcoming Amsterdam All Stars compilation.

This instalment of This Week At Juno is devoted to the art of the vinyl double pack: too lean for an LP, too beefy for an EP, it inhabits a bizarre world unto itself.

With the Indian summer in full effect throughout London this week, it’s been a mercifully quiet week for news in the electronic music world, allowing the Juno Plus editorial a chance to ease out the hangovers accumulated from our second birthday last Friday.

Excitement levels for tonight’s second birthday celebrations in the company of Saul, Talabot and Ossie are pretty high right now (not even this raging hangover is impinging) and we should say early entrance will guarantee you the chance to hear some of this week’s finest picks.

It’s T-Minus seven days until we celebrate two years of bad puns and good music in a Dalston basement, the line-up has fully been announced, we’ve got some shiny posters that will soon be adorning the walls of London and the intern is on balloon blowing duties.

Confusion and much rumbling of stomachs reigned at Juno Plus Headquarters earlier this week when what looked like a mass delivery of pizzas turned out to be the hefty 6 x LP edition of the Plastikman Arkives release.

We do love a bit of cheek here at Juno Plus HQ, and this week’s finest wink-wink nudge-nudge record came from Guardian Guide cover boy Hudson Mohawke, operating under the stealthily titled Hud Mo alias.

Whilst the rest of the internet was rushing over themselves to pass judgement on the Bon Iver-Jim Blake collaboration, we were too busy getting excited at the news that Tim Sweeney has finally got round to launching his Beats In Space label, with elusive Parisians Paradis taking the honours of first release.
The annual late August release slump reared its head this week, which meant the Juno Plus editorial crew could get away with sneaking off to do radio shows and binge on burritos (props to Benito’s Hat). Thankfully, however, the decrease in quantity hasn’t reflected on the quality of releases.

A dark seven days here in London town, with the riots that took place over the weekend and early this week taking their toll on the music world.

Having secured the services of John Talabot for our forthcoming party we’re always eager to hear how his productions are developing and the Hivern Disc man’s contribution to the new Permanent Vacation compilation sampler is a real treat.

We’re suckers for records that come wrapped in artwork that amuses and amazes here at Juno Plus, and this week there were two that made is giggle in the shape of releases from the Mystery Meat and Public Release labels.

By now you will have fully soaked in the exciting news that we’re bringing the excellent John Talabot over in September to DJ at our second birthday shenanigans in Dalston. We’ve been itching to let it loose, but thankfully there’s been plenty of quality – if somewhat mysterious – music out this week to keep us occupied.
