So, what exactly is minimal funk? For starters, it's not funk as we know it, or even particularly minimal. In fact, the 15 cuts that make up Minimal Funk 3 actually have more in common with Incognito-ish jazz-funk and classic, early noughties downtempo fodder than James Brown or sparse electronica. Given the dark directions downtempo dance music has taken over recent years, it's a hugely enjoyable set - a kind of sofa-friendly blast from the past with enough live playing and smooth grooves to impress all but the most po-faced and earnest of listeners. To these ears, there are echoes of short-loved Soma offshoot Fenetik (particularly the jazz-flecked grooves of Sidewinder) and the more horizontally inclined offerings of sadly-departed deep house imprint Guidance.
