The Alesis Q61 keyboard, which was announced at the NAMM show in California, is the latest addition to its inexpensive Q range of keyboards. The previous models in this range have proved to be massively popular, so the addition of a model with a larger keyboard looks likely to continue the trend. Designed to be an uncomplicated, but well constructed USB controller keyboard, at a price that is affordable, the Q61 succeeds admirably in this regard. With 61 velocity sensitive keys, the keyboard is big enough for most musical pieces to be performed, and expressive enough to ensure that the subtlety of the performance is not lost in translation, so to speak.

The Alesis Q61 maintains the more traditional features of a controller keyboard, with the familiar configuration of pitch-bend wheel and modulation wheel situated to the left of the keys, adding additional performance control. And, should you need to adjust volumes, or tweak other parameters, an assignable data slider is also featured. Whilst the Q61 is designed to be connected primarily via its USB socket, and is powered via the USB bus, a standard MIDI socket ensures that it can be connected to other MIDI equipment (additional 9v power supply required if not connected via USB).
