On first glance, this looks like one of those cheap disco collections you find on sale in petrol stations and supermarkets. Yet it's anything but. With one or two notable exceptions (Exodus' "Together Forever", Don Ray's "Body & Soul"), it eschews the familiar and digs much deeper in search of the real sound of disco. As a result, it's packed with great jams, many of which will be unfamiliar to disco newcomers and even casual fans. Check, for example, the kraut-funk of CAN's "And More", the groovy pomposity of Free Life's "Dance Fantasy" or Zulema's frankly bonkers disco-rock wig-out "Higher Plane"; all demonstrate the hustlin', floor-filling ethos of disco and all its mutant variations.
