Review:
We first heard the conflicting sounds of these two acts combine last year when MSTKRFT remixed Legend's "Green Light". The rave heavy remix was an instant success, prompting the two to collaborate once more. This time round, Legend features on MSTRKRFT's latest single "Heartbreaker", taken from their Fist of God album.
The result bears even more delight this time too, offering an instant dancefloor hit.
Perhaps a result of the fact that Legend's instrument of choice, piano, is given a prominent role within the track, there is a much more natural and adhesive connection between the two musical styles. This collaboration manages to find an astute balance between the Canadian duo's electronic production techniques and John Legend's account of losing his love interest to a rival. The remixes offer more of a club oriented take on things as a trio of in demand remixers are brought on board to complete the package. Laidback Luke adaptation is a builder that intensifies until it drops the massive piano hook hands to the air moment. Joachim Gerraud's faster, more driving remix ploughs forward with a sense of direction and purposefulness. This one is easy to get lost in, whether it's the pulsating music or enchanting vocal that consumes you. Wolfgang Gartner finishes with a slower take on the track, encompassing bigger breakdowns whilst maintaining the feel of the original to round the release off in style.
Amongst a host of collaborations that include Ghostface Killah, E-40 and Lil' Mo on their 'Fist of Gold' album, 'Heartbreaker' with John Legend remains the pick of the bunch. Combing the two disciplines of dance and pop, this track with be as loved by fans of either.
