A quick glance at his Facebook page confirms that Nachtbraker, AKA producer Maurits Verwoerd, doesn't take life too seriously. Yet despite an eccentric streak, there's little novel, forced or needlessly silly about his music. This latest EP for regular home Heist Recordings is packed full of smooth, fluid, heavily electronic deep house. The title track rises and falls impressively, shifting shape and focus - from stripped-back deep house drum track to dreamy, tech-tinged dancefloor electronica, and back again - several times. The more analogue-focused "Bluebottle", all starburst synths, chunky rhythms and wavy pads - repeats the trick, before he shows his darker side on the decidedly wonky "Xanitape". The latter track benefits greatly from some eccentric electronics and quirky keys.
