A SURGEON - Soul Movements Trip (Front Cover)
Review:
Time to don a plaid shirt and a pair of Timberland boots (laces undone) because the early 90s revival is in full effect. Lazy hip beats and sampled loops replace the drum and bass sounds that A Surgeon is more commonly known for. Joined by Stevee Bee on most tracks, "808" sounds like a mythical collaboration between Dr Dre and Cypress Hill. "We Won't" is stoner daisy age hip-hop while the more upbeat and jazzy "Hell Yeah" is evocative of a KRS-1 backing track. There's also a very well disguised sample of Alan Braxe & Fred Falke's "Running" tucked in there too. The most ambitious track here however, is the mellow 4/4 "Stomp Son" an orchestrated affair that features sampled contributions from Hunter S Thompson no less.
