As one of Germany's most experienced DJs, Reinhold, the boss of Trapez, Traum and My Best Friend, is acutely aware of musical trends - something that manifests itself on this new label mix. While Reinhold's ear for a hook is evident from the first bars of Dominik Eulberg's guitar-sprayed abstract opener, "Sansula", he is slow to build the set, something that is in keeping with a wider trend towards ambience and abstraction. Indeed, the first quarter of an hour consists mainly of bucolic melodies, intricately woven percussion and plunging, emotive basslines from Fairmont, Max Cooper and Minilogue. When Reinhold brings the tempo up a few notches he doesn't lose his ear for melodies, and the offbeat grooves of Freska, Minilogue and Extrawelt are imbued with catchiness absent from most contemporary techno mixes.
Review:
An outstanding duo who constantly come to the table with fresh ideas and a leftfield perspective on electro-tech, Dolby Anol are back after dynamite releases such as "Weapons Of Mass Distraction" and the skewed Eastern chops of "Visa Mastercard" with this newie on Tigerbass. Offering two different perspectives on the same tune, "Red Leather" is underscored by Modeselektor-esque deep Moog action, while "Yellow Leather" speeds things up for a more tropical and jacking feel. Both are essential (and loaded with the same incredible spoken-word samples), while the mighty Kid606 weighs in with a rare remix - taking the bare bones and putting together an acid wig-out of a mix. Finland's Obi Blanche serves up an equally schizophrenic version, while CLAWS smooth things out a little on their slo-mo disco excursion.
