Review:
Given the perilous state of many economies around the world, it seems fitting that Harmless have chosen this time to issue a compilation of music with a message. Many of the songs on What's The Word wrap their socially-conscious message in dancefloor-friendly rhythms and rump-shaking grooves - see, in particular, Philadelphia International All-Stars' "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" or Freda Payne's Vietnam War hymn "Bring The Boys Home" - but they're no less hard-hitting for that. Throw in excellent contributions from Billy Paul, Moody Scott, Gil Scott-Heron, Curtis Mayfield and Laura Lee (the gospel-flecked goodness that is "Women's Love Rights"), and you've got an essential reminder of the power of music to tackle serious issues. Contemporary artists take note.
