Review: Raising tension and attention with every release right now, Natty Dub return with yet another BS-free collection from some of the underground's most respected individuals. T>I loosens the bass strings for his slinked out dark-jazz stepper "Regulate", Hoogs puts all the aces in their places with a precision space-reggae gully jam "R Ting", Coda goes all bubble-bass a la mid 90s V on "Back It Up" and Jaxx & Dub General roll out with pure grumble groove and classic jump up spoken samples. Finally Flat T brings business to a close with a deal-breaking late 90s Bristol-flavoured cut where the spooked-out bass has a life of its own. Immense.

Review: Steve Bcee recently blew people away with his impressive third full length LP, Come And Join Us. Such was the response that he's now releasing a companion record called "Thanke For Joining Us". The release sees the original LP reworked by a host of top names. Highlights include the soulful, intelligent melodies and crisp beats of SPY collab, "Is Anybody Out There?(The Vanguard Project mix)", the glistening broken hip-hop beats of "Delirious (Kiyan Law mix)", the jazzy, late night chill vibes of "Sun Goes Down (Pola and Bryson mix)" and the speedy, orchestrated DnB anthem "Cut Me Loose(Muffler mix)".

Review: From Prolix to Technimatic, Total Science to Was A Be by way of Icicle, Joe Ford, Fourward, Spectrasoul, Phace, Ed.It and many more, Friction's label digs deep from the genre's most innovative corners and eras. As we prepare to close off 2016, they've taken a detailed look back over the last 18 months of crucial output to not just represent where the label is at, but the genre itself. An ideal opportunity to fill any holes in your collection cuts such as Fourward & Linguistics demonic stomper "Storm", Was A Be's rudeboy-slewing halftime damager "Blind" or Break's sparkling "Emerald" and complete with a journeyman mix of the tracks themselves, this rounds up yet another serious year at the very forefront of drum & bass.

Review: According to dictionaries to envenom someone is to bite them or infect them with a poison. According to junglists, meanwhile, to Envenom someone is to hit them hard with the gulliest possible jump-up cuts and not stop until they've kicked two massive dents in the floor. Following high profile releases on the likes of Calypso and Multi Function this year we find him smashing down the doors of Smokin Riddims with two more jugular-aimed riff-heavy cuts. "On My Way" balances a sci-fi atmosphere with grunted staccato bass hits while "Run" thrusts with a riff that can cut through solid concrete. Infectious.

Review: Spanish producer Rayko has delivered some impressive dancefloor magic courtesy of his Rare Wiri label. Ranging from re-edits to deep nu-disco and everything in between, the imprints sound is all encompassing. That philosophy is fully explored here on Retro Future Disco, bringing all kinds of disco approaches to the table. Highlights include the schmokin' 70s jazz-funk of "Hot Head Disco" by Psychemagik, the legendary Il Flagranti's rare re-edit of new wave classic "Walking In The Rain" by Flash & The Pan and the dreamy, star-crossed synth-pop of "In Your Eyes" by Yam Who? Something for everyone here.

Review: We're not sure what Hotmood got up to on his recent Rhodes Trip, but whatever it was, it was good enough to result in his latest EP on the mighty Editorial. Boasting four tracks, the EP features the freshest sounds from nu-disco world capital Mexico. "Can You Dig It" opens with smooth, jazzy and Latin-tinged poolside boogie, "Magic Touch" follows up with some looped saxy -fizz, whilst "Check This Out Yo!" veers into funky/disco house territory and "Soul Energy" wraps things up with a heady Fender-Rhodes-lead groover. Slick stuff.

Review: Italian duo Mena and Melgado step up to the plate with their first appearance on Midnight Riot, bringing with them a quartet of funk-fuelled dancefloor bombs. They begin in confident mood, successfully looping up a breezy, impassioned vocal sample over a tooled-up disco-boogie groove on "Wings of Love", before "African Food" sees them stick a house rocket underneath a horn-heavy Afro-funk jam. "Instant Party" happily lives up to the promise of its' title, with chopped-up chants, spiraling sax links and goodtime grooves ensuring an energetic, club-ready feel. The EP also includes a tasty remix of "Wings of Love" from Masterworks and Hot Digits man Kiu D, who successfully drags the track further towards bumpin' disco-house territory.

Review: In the wake of key dispatches on the likes of Liondub, Subway, G13, Digital Terror and High R8, Sub Killaz continue their murderous mission this year with more titanium tear-out gold and cheeky homages to hip-hop's golden era. Just when you've worked out "Shock Out" along flies in a flamenco from nowhere. Elsewhere "Catch My Drift" punches with a unique sense of off-beat funk with Migos muscle and "Dangerous" goes for the drama vibe with its sweeping staccato riff. Finally "Rap Music" shuts us down with restrained stepper where a clipped bass tone grunts a sharp riff that's mirrored by the overweight subs. Get connected.

Review: We've come accustomed to Kiu D delivering warm, groovy, floor-friendly music that blurs the boundaries between re-editing, remixing, and original production. He's at it again on this first outing for Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint. The EP's four original tracks utilize big chunks of killer old soul, funk, disco and jazz-funk jams, but combine these elements with chunky house beats and woozy deep house flourishes. This is arguably best exemplified on the tactile, sun-kissed swing of "I'm In Your Life" and surging, solo heavy "Jazz or Funk". The package is completed by two tasty reworks: a bass-heavy disco-house revision of "I'm In Your Life" by Voodoo Whiskey, and Twisted Soul Collective's righteous, party disco remix of "Jazz or Funk".

Review: Sleazy McQueen's Whiskey Disco label seems to be on fire at present, with new EPs of white-hot edits appearing on an almost weekly basis. Predictably, there's more high-grade material on this latest split artist four-tracker. Pontchartain kicks things off with a brilliantly dubbed-out take on Gayle Adams classic "Lifesaver" (previously successfully extended and re-touched by FLX One a few years back), before Osmose delivers organ solos, orgasmic groans and rump shaking beats on "Broadway Kiss". Derek Kaye's "Holdin' On", a deliciously celebratory number full of cheery scat vocals and incessant grooves, and "I Got Your Wang", a cheery, sun-kissed chunk of disco perfection from Rulefinns Kravstor.

Review: It would be fair to refer to Dino Lenny as a "veteran": the Italian producer has been churning out dancefloor hits since the dawn of the '90s. This release sees him join forces with Cajual and Hot Creations regular Doorly for a loving tribute to the joys of club culture. The action centres on a meandering, largely spoken vocal describing a mesmerizing late night dancing experience in "The Magic Room". On the lead version - a tasty re-edit by Lenny and Seth Troxler - this is accompanied by "Lazy" style pianos, and a chunky, disco-tinged house groove. The low-slung guitars and bass are pushed to the fore on Doorly's energy-packed remix, while Luke Solomon doffs a cap to the jazz-flecked boompty sounds of Chicago on his busy rework.

Review: Released the same week as DLR's album Dreamland, DLR and Mako's Onemind project finally gets its official debut. Introduced by Goldie on Friction's Radio 1 show over a year ago, the wait for this echoes of the dubplate culture that's clearly inspired the project: icy Bluenote atmospherics, big wavy bass textures, swaggering trooper drums are all keynotes as we jostle among the re-futurised 92 tones on "Skin Dem", swathe through the cosmic paranoid fumes of "Early Evolution", skip amid the gliding synths on "2 On Each Side" and stumble blindly through the murky drums and rusty fog of the brilliantly titled Om Unit collabo "Expliciticity". Open your mind.

Review: Powerhouse collabo business: Longstanding craftsman Serum joins forces with fast-rising duo T & Oberon for two understated space-travel rollers that shake and shudder with the perfect balance of shades and energy. "Take My Breath Away" is all about the star-gazing; the pads, vocals and extra-sweeping chords live up to the title while a depth plunge bassline ensures maximal weight and punch. "In Too Deep", meanwhile, nods its cap to classic house and tech foundations with a rising riff that wouldn't go amiss in a Stephan Bodzin set, neatly softened by a soulful vocal snippet. Fresh material.

Review: Jungle's favourite shagoholic Nymfo steps up to Total Science's CIA for the first time in several years and he's making up for lost time: four tracks of forthright D&B, each one catered for a different chapter of the night. "Something Tells Me" eases us in with soulful prowess as Riya coats the liquid riddim with honey, "Barfly" is much more of a bar fight with its tribal-like vocal sample switches, "Stop Motion" is late night Renegade around 2001 with its dense drum work and unforgiving pads while "Bread & Butter" closes the show on a next-century funk tip. Beautiful.

Fresh from laying down the law with Majistrate on Playaz, here he returns to Sweet Tooth with two left-of-centre jump up cuts: "Get Back" gets its funk on with a croaky bass and alien lasers while "Cattivo" goes for a deeper bass riff that doesn't sound a million miles away from early Clipz. Definitely no bad thing.

Review: What an exciting few years it's been for the Artikal bossman Kenzo. Playfully switching between 140, 160 and 170, dub, jungle and D&B, he's in his element right now and packing some seriously darked out heat. Back on ThirtyOne he's hurling more heaviness our way. "Sykura" is a crisp steppy track not dissimilar to early Subtitles and TeeBee material while "Assemble" kicks with more of a bouncy two-step spring. Think Jonny L and you're on the right track. That's the level we're talking here.

Review: More often spotted cooking up sickness stews with McLeod, Villem tag teams with Belgian deepsmith Phase. The result is every bit as spotless, crisp and alluring as you want it to be. Soulful but barbed with the right balance of darkness, each cut trembles but punches: Steo adds emotional sparkles to "Thru My Soul", "The Traveller" soothes with K&D era pads before dropping into a Break-style elastic bass groove while "Kaikol" plays the cosmic card with its mystic instruments and drawn out notes. Of course McLeod shows his face too. And he does so on the beautiful "Reap What You Sow" where absolute bliss drops into total jungle dungeonism.

Review: Six months deep and already onto his third 1985 release, Perez takes us back to his roots with a sublime selection of subtle work-outs; "The Raven" persists with a rattling percussive riff and droning bassline, "Drifting" swishes and sways with a slinky two-step, yearning atmospheres and lingering keys while "Inside Your Love" is a pneumatic funk trip into two-step soul. Finally "Numbers" turns the lights down with purring, naked soul. Beautiful.

Review: Even by his usual high standards, this EP from Melbourne producer Fantastic Man is pretty darn special. It begins with the tactile, loved-up brilliance of "Galactic Ecstasy", where glistening, intergalactic synthesizer lines and chiming melodies tumble down over restless acid lines and a hustling rhythm track. "Acid Martin" boasts a little more jacking intent, whilst retaining the new age influenced melodies and humid textures more associated with Young Marco's work. He closes proceedings with the superb "Legoman", where winding, intelligent techno style melodies rub shoulders with lusciously deep chords and Project Pablo style deep house breakbeats.

Review: "The Rumble" saw a return to form from garage legend MJ Cole, alongside AJ Tracey, but the 892 label have decided that it wasn't enough; the show must go on, and there must be something extra special to sweeten the deal even more. Luckily, these guys think on their feet and have recruited the very best across the bass game; first up, Sheffield bass pioneer Toddla T twists the tune up with a selection of jungle breaks and ominous grime sonics - it's second nature to this dude - and this is followed by an absolute jump-up frenzy from the legendary DJ Hype and newcomer Annix, a high-speed d&b stepper for the next decade. Last but certainly not least, Scarface heads back to the garage rave by offering something of stop-start, shuffle-house monster, the sort of tune that could only be conceived in the UK.

The versatile producer wastes no time getting stuck in, starting out with the explosive "Orca" which features one of the most amazing arpeggios this side of "I Feel Love". There's more vintage, synth driven disco vibes on "Minke" or "Logmans Break" while the feel good nu-disco vibes of "Pygmy" are reminiscent of modern greats like Jay Shepheard or Milton Jackson.

Be prepared for some bass driven, street level, low end theories as per usual. There's Bok x Sweyn J featuring Semma on the sexy future R&B of "Good 2 U", Helix with some superb hyper-riddims on the explosive and syncopated "Funky 1irst", while label mainstays appear too, rest assured. There's Jam City with the brooding and powerful rhythm workout of "Direct Drums" and of course L-Vis 1990 with the sultry vocals of Ronika on the late night noir thriller "Sweet Spot".

Review: Barely 18 months have passed since his solo debut Seeing Sounds and DLR returns with another deep detail exercise. Fired by the current political climate, the Bristol-based artist breaks down the echo chamber with killer warm, grainy and fat productions. Whether it's the understated loose funk of "Trip Up", the pressure-cooked, sub-baked rave textures of "Wonder What It Feels Like" or the dark alley paranoia of "Unusual Behaviour" that gets you woke then the Photekian spaciousness and dubby wonder of "Wasting Time" and the Badco style drone of "Time Is Everything" will certainly send you into a post-truth punch-up. Sweet dreams are made of this.

Review: It was 4 years ago when Scour Records happened upon the phenomenon in waiting three-piece Captain Flatcap, playing to two men and a dog in some best-forgotten dive. Now its 2016 and it's different story indeed, the world is beginning to be seduced by the madcap fusion of styles that Chris, Tom and Matt uniquely provide. Now here is their eponymous album to take things to the next level. There are 10 tracks to enjoy; our favourites include the melodic dubstep-meets-ye-olde-flute music of "Awakening", the pulsating medieval trance of "Sergei's Journey" and the DnB mayhem of closer "Are You Me?".

Review: Here on Labor Of Love EP covert disco spy Labor Of Love delivers three cuts on the That's What We Doin' EP, and all of them look the American soul sounds of the glittering 1980s - "Favours" kicks things off as a slow jam with chiming keys, clavinet grooves and smooth n breezy vocals, next the title track is a faster golden boogie jam, the kind that Metro Area looked to for inspiration and lastly "Just For You" is the kind of raw bass strutter that would have set the coolest New York funk clubs alight back in the day.

Review: The kind of names and quality of releases that Brooklyn's Razor N Tape has supported puts them in the disco premier league. Here they enlist Jkriv to provide us with dancing fodder that isn't throwaway stuff. First is his rework of "Bukom Mashie" by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band. The latter, his "King Mashie edit", is a raucous slice of bassy and brassy percussive Afrobeat. Elsewhere an O'Jays classic gets stretched out into eight minutes of slow bump bliss on "The Queen On Her Throne" and resurfaces in a deliciously spare dub called "The Queens Beats". Top notch!

Metallic, sharp yet out-of-this-world, this blows minds on every outing. Simskai goes solo for the second part as "Gave Over" goes all-out grunt with alien sound bass punctuation and just the right amount of eerie strings in the background.

Firing with pure dark matter but never over-burning, it pulls away from gravity with broadsword production and the right amount of thrust. "Bubble Wrap" leaves us floating in the ether with some deft sample work and outer-planetary atmospheres while "Killer" boots us back to reality with a vicious bump; grizzly, raw and honest, it somehow tips nods at both Full Cycle and Hardware with its attitude, groove and aesthetic. Happy landing.

Review: Mature, authentic and gullier than your nan swearing at a seagull; Deep In The Jungle ante up once again with a winter-smashing six-piece. As the title suggests, battles are the focus point here with seven of the label's best mates licking up their sharpest shots. Cautious and Epicentre get radical with the ragga element, DJ Hybrid plays the atmos card with factor 10 rushes while "Playing Games" is total diva, drums and pianos. Shutting down this sweet serenade of sickness are Bassflex and Galvatron, both cooking up their most fractured, doctor-dented amen edit frenzies. Classically trained with eyes on the future, Deep In The Jungle are killing it right now.

Review: With previous collaborations punching massive holes through the walls at the HQ of Bryan Gee's Chronic and Liquid V, US D&B soldiers Dave Owen and Jaybee now set their sights on Bristol: home of junglist daddy Randall. Long time supporter of US D&B talent, Randall's roped the two in for a heavyweight collection: "Blow" is an all-out gully roller that seems tailor made for Mac II, "Streets Is Dirty" is all about the rattling snare and Krust-style twostep while "You Want None" is a straight-up grade-A 3am dark-out that shudders and shakes with the same grunting restraint as Jaybee's solo groaner "Who Want Some". It's a rhetorical question - we all want some.

The title track is a warm slice of future 2-step, complete with dreamy atmospherics, distant RnB vocals and some deep sub warbles. "Link Up" goes even further into luxurious MJ Cole-style vibes for a truly slick ride. Moony also remixes the former into some filthy hardcore nastiness, with bouncy breaks mayhem by Cellardore and smooth late night vibes Courtesy of Doctor Nick.

Review: Ulterior Motive make tracks that are built to last so it makes sense that the parts lend themselves to equally solid remixes. Every single version is a blinder here; Break takes "keep it Moving" to leaner, funkier pastures, Icicle technofies "Chapter" with steppy, halftime hurtism while Lenzman highlights the already soulful "Stay" with his own cosmic touch. Elsewhere Xtrah turns "Longshot" inside out (while paying respect to its instantly distinctive riff) Mark System turns in a seriously unique, clipped-bass twist on "Muted" and the guys themselves demolish "Inta-National" and rebuild it with nothing but melted gully. Masterful.

"FLLN 4 U" is all about the roomy, cloud-jumping big breeze vibes, "Milestone" flexes on a star-bound gospel level, "More Jungle" eases and pleases with lush dubby horn washes and less-is-more vocal touches. Review: Sooner or later A Sides is going to bring his "Quart Sector" series to climactic finale and we won't know what we did with our lives before these monthly murder sessions. Breaking bad in all directions, it's yet another cleverly compiled collection that shines with all styles: there's a dominant soul sound on "Believe In Who You Are", "In Reality" and "Take My Time", b-boy heroics come correct via T.R.A.C on "Avenger", Optical vision oozes from the toxic droner "Break It Down". 20 tunes deep, the "Quart Sector" just keeps on giving. Review: Another month, another solid split EP from long-running edit imprint Chopshop. This time round, there's no unifying concept, just a quartet of cuts guaranteed to get things going out on the dancefloor. Saint Mathieu kicks things off with a chunky, party-starting rearrangement of a lesser-known European P-funk workout from the turn of the '80s, before DJ Laurel drops the cheery, chop-heavy disco-house chug of "Don't Hold Back". Label regular Dave Gerrard steals the show with "Glow Of Dub (Morning Mix)", a superior rework of a tactile, '80s soul favourite, while Cordycep closes proceedings with a hard-edged scalpel rework of a throbbing, early '80s, Prelude style electrofunk-meets-rap stomper ("The Key").

Review: When we say 'massive' you say 'collab'... It doesn't get much murkier than Binga and Chimpo. Drawing lines through jungle, grime, juke, halftime and anything else they care to, the northern doublet lay the gully hammer down. From the dramatic aquatic riddim and call/response to the trapped out skittish groove of the title track by way of the ghetto-tech fury of "Drank", the pure prang of "Sassy Riddim" and cosmic hip-hop alien lapdance anthem "Selection Dark", this really sounds like nothing else on the planet.

Review: The title says it all: "Hard Bop" is as succinct as it sounds. A "Warhead" style Q&A with a very lean rhythm and subs complexion, a whole universe of funk can be found in the devilishly simple groove. "Sight N Soundz" adopts a similar minimal MO with a very precise, classical late 90s style bass riff that just nags and nags until you submit. Both cuts laced with detailed drum work that never sits still, Ego Trippin is, once again, bang on the dollar with these.

Review: Half man, half machine (hence the name), Hybrid has been unstoppable this year. Tune after tune after tune for days and they've all been precision delivered with the dancefloor and heads in mind. Here we find him on mean debut label EP flex for Natty Congo and nothing is left to chance as all vibes are licked thoroughly; "Occupational Hazard" kicks with real classical Moving Fusion style late 90s power and some brilliantly tripped out cascading moans, "Lunar" kicks with a Rockwellian ghettotech pace while "Bad Man Culture" rolls with a mild jumpy wobble reminiscent of foundation Bristol. "Turn It Around" brings home the funk bacon with a vibe that's not dissimilar to Break. Seriously.

Review: Three years have passed since Horizon last rallied up the troops and embarked on a dead-night brain-burgling Dreamthief parade. As always it's an all-star cast with the likes of Amoss, Break, Naibu, Digital, Mikal, Mako, Need For Mirrors and many more cooking up some of their starkest, uncompromised and innovative cuts: the tight conga hypnosis of Breaks "Headway", the turbo piano rolls of Invaderz "Dukes Drift", the sublime cinematic jazz soul of Hydro & War's "Jam", the cascading, twinkling textures of Naibu's "Time Out", the neck-snap amen mechanica of Digital's "Spark Cut"... If this is the soundtrack to our innermost stories being syphoned from our heads at our most vulnerable sleeping states then sign us up and take the lot. Sweet dreams of thieved of this.

Review: Apparently, this EP is hot property around the dubstep circles; word on the street is that these two slammers have been in-demand for a while, but only available as dubs until now. Sleeper's output is always top notch but, we have to say, these new late-night bruisers are among his very best, and worthy of some true head-nodding. "Seagulls" has got all the right elements for a raucous showdown: a gratuitous amount of low frequencies, a wailing, foreboding texture, and that classic dubstep snare-attack. "French Toasty" is no less powerful in its delivery and, in fact, the bass on this monster is even more poignant, and it's easy to why these two tunes are just so sought-after. Go forth and destroy.

Review: Ripper by name, ripper by nature - Cornish Jack has well and truly obliterated 2016 with his sharp, angular take on jump-up. Nasty enough to keep the fakers at bay, funky enough not to alienate folk (and usually armed with a well-considered and wry sample), "The Coolest" is yet another example of dagger-drawn signature. Waspy basses nip and tuck over concrete beats while the spoken word does its thing. Looking for a little more chaos in the basses? Head for Eazy's mix. Cool.

Review: Maceo Plex returns on his respected Ellum Audio imprint with a new album. Here the fellow known to his Mum as Eric Estornel presents some highly engineered grooves that reflect his extensive background in producing techno and electro; way back to his modest Dallas, Texas beginnings under the tutelage of greats like Gerard Hanson (Covenxtion/E.R.P.) where he used such aliases as Mariel Ito and Maetrik. Return to Solar is certainly diverse in its execution of various moods and grooves but overall has a definite sense of soul and emotion throughout. We particularly enjoyed the the intelligent electro of "The Replicant V1" or "Love On Time", the hi-tech soul of "Shoulder Of Orion" and the tough futurist stomp of "Traktion".
