Review: Progressive heads get stuck into this tasty treat, as for release number 21 on the wicked MicroCastle label they welcome back Cid Inc and for another double header EP following on from 'Our Benefactors' back in 2010. There is a real techno undercurrent to these, making the grooves impossible to stand still too and injecting energy and lift in to your sets at any time. The Original mix of Emotional Self is what's doing it most for us and will be hammered by everyone from Sasha to Zabelia, while the likes of Cattaneo are on the Microtrauma cut. On the flip 'Urban Biorhythm' is a little less dancefloor yet still with plenty going on to keep those late night smoke filled underground clubs bubbling.

Review: Kudos to Soma for signing and releasing work by Reeve when it would have been far easier - and possibly more financially rewarding - to put out big room minimal techno. "Phobia" is based on a pulverising rhythm, its dark, dense pounding beats wrapped around an evil bassline and bursts of white noise. Think Perc getting it on with Surgeon and you're not far off the mark. "Fear" meanwhile manages to unite US minimalism with Birmingham style techno. The steel-plated, razor sharp rhythm is mean enough in its own right, but when Reeve combines it with the kind of sulphuric bassline that Regis would spew out, it becomes clear that Soma has hit pay dirt.

Review: Great Stuff is by far one of the best labels in techno and tech house, with each and every release hitting the mark not just in their specific genres but also opening up to the wider spectrum to inject a fresh slice into progressive and warm-up sets. This latest from Spaniard Dosem is prime example, a simplistic deep groove will get the floor moving while trippy repetitive synth lines and gently bubbling layers gradually build while keeping attention and momentum. Review: Marc Romboy's Systematic Recordings is given an anti-up with Barcelona-based Coyu for this latest instalment of the legendary tech series. "Flus Flus" introduces the EP in industrial style, bringing forth elaborative drone injections and bizarre machine infusions, but it's "Heatwaves" featuring Cevin Fisher which opens the beats and sees Coyu produce one hell of a floor monster, complete with some of the craziest percussion we've heard in a while from Systematic. "Fabula Fabulei" is more sinister, making use of twisted chord delays to paint the picture, but "Flus Flus" is a real stand-out, where deep tribal beats meet grainy FX-influxes and minimalistic bleeps.

Review: The New York-based Chilean Nicolas Jaar releases his first EP for Circus Company after a string of releases on Brooklyn label Wolf + Lamb. Of course this is another sombre affair from the young producer but as indicated from the abstract artwork, it's not all as straightforward as that. It seems pointless to attempt to categorise it as any one genre, which is characteristic of Jaar's complete disregard for boundaries combining anything from disjointed electronic sounds to sampling hip-hop beats or French opera. Perhaps less dark than some of his past tracks, the lyrical vocals in "Marks" are a little more upbeat, paired with light pianos and jaunty percussion, whilst "Angles" is focused around layered vocals in subtly melancholic tones, cleverly arranged with plucked strings in minor keys. "Materials" however features inevitably off-kilter pianos and brass, juxtaposed with electronic beeps and percussive claps entering the din. A superb EP.
