from $2.27
Review: Having previously appeared on a dizzying number of split EPs from the Chopshop and Editorial labels (amongst others), Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee are finally given a release they can call their own. The Chop 40 (we sniggered, at least) is typical of their output to date, flitting between loopy, filter-heavy takes on sumptuous soul and disco jams (see the baggy house grooves and classic horns of "Push Da Groove" and slap bass-boasting "Bounce & Shake"), straight-up funk edits (the riotous "Sho'nuff") and slower excursions. It's the latter that arguably stand out here, with the string-laden sweetness of "Dance 2 Da Musique" and decidedly Balearic "Pinky" both impressing.

Pinnacle - (5:04) 129 BPM

Review: Brighton bass evangelists 877 have the likes of GoldFFinch and My Nu Leng amongst their roster and can now boast the addition of the hotly tipped Distro too. Featuring the moody garage-flecked "Pinnacle" and the deep, wobble-heavy 4x4 of the title track, Flava D also remixes the latter into end-of-the-world speed garage. However, it's the thrilling collision of Bristolian heroes Distro and My Nu Leng on the big-beat- meets-disco-in-bass-town shenanigans of "Sleepless" that's getting the real hype from the likes of B Traits and Monki right now. On fire!

Review: Last year saw French label ClekClekBoom cement its burgeoning reputation with a compilation showcasing the local talent it had been championing since starting up in 2011, including such luminaries in wild-card bass music as French Fries and The Town. There has been a swarm of left-leaning club bangers issued out since the first volume of Paris Club Music, and so it doesn't feel rushed to be welcoming the second volume with a stack of choice cuts from the past twelve months. There's a strong unified vibe to ClekClekBoom, from the tight but slippery electro of Manare to the off-kilter techno of NSDOS, while 50Weapons staple Bambounou sounds right at home with his primal and utterly head-spinning "Idem".

If I Was To Gravy You - (5:28) 123 BPM
from $2.55
Review: Thanks to a string of well-received releases on Wolf Music, Dutch deep house producer Frits Wentink is a man in demand. Here he builds on his growing reputation with a typically bass-heavy, floor-friendly four-tracker for Heist Recordings. Wentink's production style - eccentric but danceable, and prone to blending fuzzy, analogue-rich bottom end with all manner of curious musical flourishes - is unique, and all four tracks come blessed with his usual intriguing touches. "Ligament" is the most obvious deep house killer, though we're particularly fond of the rubbery bass, watery vocals and jazz keys of "Sauce" - though the bouncy "Shrewd" has the most cross-over potential. Either way, it's another excellent EP from the Dutchman.

All Gravy by Deekline & Ed Solo on Disco Cakes Cue Track
Deekline & Ed Solo - "All Gravy" (Hotline Zero remix) - (3:38) 110 BPM
from $2.55
Review: It's refreshing to see Disco Cakes add a little something different into the mix of their mash-ups: bass! So in a bold fusion of old and new we get the likes of Deekline & Hotline Zero's "Pump Up The Volume" which takes M/A/R/R/S' 80s hit and marries it to a fizzy Drop It Like It's Hot hip-hop jam. Slynk also has a stab at "Top Rankin" which takes Althea & Donna's perennial 70s party anthem and successfully welds it to some steely big beat sounds and finally Hotline Zero's remix of "All Gravy" gets all tropical bass on our case.

Ambia - (4:31) 174 BPM
from $2.55
Review: When news of the Systems offshoot of Critical Music was first announced, label CEO Kasra was quoted as saying it would follow the Modulations series as the next phase of "music that stands tall on its own but also as part of the Critical family". First up in the series is Halogenix -a Critical regular both in a solo capacity and as part of the production trio Ivy Lab - and this four track release sets a high standard of quality for any subsequent contributor to follow. "Her Waves" is a quite sublime production to kick things off, and from here Halogenix shows his range with real confidence. Eveson collaboration "Baby" sounds like a 21st C UK update on Timbalaand in his prime, whilst "Too Good" is a brisk exercise in icy vocal drum and bass and "Porcupine" is as spiky as the title suggests.

from $3.24
Review: Another Disco Edit label finds its way into the already oversaturated marketplace which, ordinarily, would be no cause for excitement. This label, however, has two saving graces, one: It is named after the famous 'Nakatomi Plaza' from 'Die Hard', which is a winner in this pendants view, and two: the edits are really quite good. This 9 track album covers a lot of different styles and pallets, from the Italo-disco Hi-NRG track 'The Captial of Nepal' to the beatdown edit of a well known UK Soul band fronted by a Ginger Haired 'Mick'. There's a lot to be enjoyed in this package, maybe there is always room for quality.

Afro Discoder - (4:00) 120 BPM

Review: Paris-based crate digger DJ Moar is no newcomer to the re-edit game; he released his first illicit reworks and bootlegs in the mid-2000s, and in the last few years has successfully divided his time between solo jaunts and work as one half of disco/house fusion duo Venice Beach. This soul EP of soul and funk flavoured reworks is arguably his best for some time. Each of the four tracks is deliciously playable, from the horn-heavy disco-funk of loose-limbed opener "High Groove" (arguably the highlight of a strong collection), to the vocoder-laced Afro-disco loop-grooves of "Afro Disorder". There's a slower, deeper gem, too, in the shape of the intoxicating, sun-kissed "Funky Cat".

Review: Portuguese Playaz poison, BassBrothers have been on Hype's talent roster since late 2013 and are finally making their label debut with a whopping six-track mission statement. Riddled with creativity, sharp drums, superb execution of samples and unrelenting energy, each of these cuts justify the cross-board hype they've been enjoying lately. Highlights include the snare-snapping steppiness of "Bolivian Yeyo", the playful use of samples and well-tamed tears of "Blastin", the twisted ragga skanks and distorted bass bitterness of "Fashion" and the industrial strength nastiness of "Shut Up". A contender for label debut of the year, this amplifies Playaz' trustworthy consistency tenfold. Ludicrously big.

Review: Every now and then, in between artist EPs, Tru Funk knock out a mini compilation of bootlegs where the original artists get spliced together like Frankenstein's monsters of funk. Highlights of this five tracker include Tom Showtime's fusing of Khia's famously filthy My Neck, My Back with some of Snoops' Gangsta Luv on "Gangsta Lick", Phibe's totally eccentric party smasher "Dig My Bounce" (which mixes Missy Elliot with No Diggity) and Spox's electro funk monster "Roses" which beefs up Haywood's '80s classic of the same name.

Review: The young guns at East London outfit Sneaky Music step up with somewhat of a hybrid release for their third outing. Combining the talents of Michigan maestro Rick Wade and the young blood from the Mobilee stable bringing the feel bang up to date with the remix duties. A Detroit, London, Berlin, house music Bermuda triangle, if you like! Rick Wade tirelessly continues to deliver deep and groove-led original slabs well into his third decade of producing and this luscious EP is no exception. A mix of old school beats with warm vintage keys with long established Mobilee records producer AND.ID almost re-working completely 'Me & You', giving a feel good dance floor filler touch full of mad drum hits and breaks. Whereas Sneaky label founder and newly Mobilee family member Ranacat comes up with a trippy lower tempo version of 'Neuro Stimuli' for those after party sunrise moments.

Review: It's been an impressive debut year from Australian producer Greg Packer, whose re-edits and remixes under the Dr Packer alias have won him a legion of fans around the world. Here, he makes his Hotbox Boogie debut with a quartet of floor-friendly, house-focused reworks of disco and boogie classics. David Joseph's Paradise Garage classic "You Can't Hide You Love" gets a thickset, 21st century makeover on "Can't Hide", while a familiar talkbox-boasting electroboogie cut gets straightened out and toughened up on "Jam Right". Best of all, though, is "I Love Sunshine", a singalong deep house take on Maze's "Joy & Pain" which utilises elements from both the original and live versions of the track.

Review: Bad Company is in the habit of releasing some of the scene's best high energy, heavy drum & bass. From this LP's epic opening statement by the label's owner himself, a brain-blistering stepper of monstrous proportions, it's fair to say that this has not set out to be a gentle introduction to the label and all it stands for. From the erratic neuro of Zooi's "Detail" to the minimal start and thousand MPH drop of "Minerva"; Soul Synthetic's cinematic nightmare stylings of "Goose Bumps" and the icy emptiness of "Headslide", this release has everything a twisted drum & bass fan from the darker side of the tracks needs to be happy.

The long-awaited release of this VIP achieves that rare thing of being perfect in its own right, destined to be played up there with the finest, as well-loved and well-worn as the original. Picking up a dub style the only way Dom can, "Outta Endz VIP" is a big n' nasty rollout, taking the best of Jamaica and giving it his own scrunch and twist. One of this years' essential picks, get it and educate everyone around you. It's your duty.

Review: UK-based producer Actraiser blends his frenetic, complex style to beautiful liquid backdrops in this stunning EP for Fokuz. Luckily, he's perfectly adept at blending both his high-energy beat-chopping and glorious, otherworldly harmonies, so the result throughout each track is pretty amazing. Sparkling with fresh, spritzy production and underpinned by deep rumbles of soft, velvety bass, there's textures upon textures upon textures, all waiting for listeners to diver right in.

Review: Last seen on Exit back in 2012 with the excellent Get Busy drop, Charlie 'Fracture' Fieber returns to the label and shows off his Loving Touch on an EP that really ups the production ante. Centre stage here is undoubtedly the title track which looks to two eras of Chicago for inspiration, skilfully borrowing (officially no less) from Ralph Rosario's Chicago House classic "You Used To Hold Me", and rebooting it to a 160bpm footwork flex which retains some UK bassweight and elements of Fracture's own D&B roots. From here Fracture drops a carnival classic in the making in the shape of Machinedrum favourite "Werk It", collaborates with Sam Binga on the 808 club burner "Grippin' Grain" (apparently conceived during a wicked hangover) and ends on a decidedly rude note with the junglist breaks n bass line business of "Overload".

Review: It's not often a true legend delivers the goods long into their career but MC Fats is still delivering the goods as this LP proves. Filled with collaborations and remixes from the MC Fats Collective and beyond and pushing his unique sound to the next level. Huge names like Calibre, Basher, Total Science, SIN, Lynx and Dom & Roland move in to attack their own slices of the action, taking what could simply be an outstanding LP to cult status and beyond. It's no surprise that a man of his experience could wrangle in some of the biggest names in D&B for his album - what is surprising though is that none of the input is an afterthought. Each contributor has given their best and it shows.

Review: Gun Audio return to our good books with a stonking release from Lyptikal, a UK-based soundboy with a lot of bass-driven fury under his hat. Fairly new on the scene, Lyptikal has been busying himself lately with this five-track EP, a noisy and at times experimental exploration of dancefloor drum & bass we've come to take for granted. From razorwire basslines in "Dirty Twelve" and title track "Rockstone" to the choppy beats and old school vocals of "Only One"; the suspense and uncharacteristic delicacy of "Scanners" (which quickly morphs into dancefloor smasher) and final track "Gimme A Signal" with it's political message and gully bass, there's no standing still here. Get yourself a copy and get moving.

Review: Bear Fresh have been pushing their more deep house-influenced side of late, but now they're revisiting their more urban-orientated "City" series to redress the balance. This second volume keeps the vibes going with nine killer tracks, highlights of which include the wobble-heavy stepper "Crazy Hype" by Crown Duels & Resonate, the apocalyptic 4x4 meanness of "Crater Face" by Pelikan, the tremor-inducing low end of future-laser-house belter, "Olisha's Call" by Scullious & One Over and, the frankly nuts, military bombardment of "Full Tilt" by Kiri & Nab.

Review: Here's something of a treat for Moderat fans: a stonking new remix of II album favourite "Bad Kingdom" by German veteran DJ Koze. There's much to admire about his bumping, floor-friendly reinterpretation, which retains the original's woozy, hazy vibe - and distinctive vocals - while gently leading it further towards the dancefloor with arms raised skywards. It's melodic, quietly uplifting and decidedly heavy, even if the percussion does shuffle rather than bang. The (virtual) flipside offers another treat in the shape of an extended 11-minute version of Robag Wruhme's swinging, string-laden re-edit of the same track, which first appeared (in shortened form) on January's "Tour Edition" reissue of II.

Review: It's been heartening to see the artistic rebirth of legendary French artist Laurent Garnier. After seemingly losing his way in recent years, he's returned with a bang in 2014, releasing music on Still Music, 50 Weapons and Musique Large with EPs that have variously touched on instrumental hip-hop, techno and jackin' house. Here he pops up on Motor City Drum Ensemble's label with a pair of warm, fuzzy and attractive deep house tracks. "Psyche-Delia" opens proceedings, layering exotic synth motifs and looped keys over a bassy, low-slung groove. Arguably even better is "Whistle for Frankie", a touching Frankie Knuckles tribute blessed with lovingly soulful keys, synth doodles and melancholic, minor key chords.

Review: Propa Talent present five inspired remixes of DJRap's "Digable Bass", spanning from the sublime to the ridiculous. First up, Voltage takes a blessed-out trip down memory lane, as his remix switches from serenity to pure old skool jungle break nuttery. Aries & Stivs take up the reigns on next and the remix swiftly picks up all the sounds old heads will remember from the great days of drum & bass' early glory years. DJRap remixes herself for track three, unpicking her workings to show huge pockets of ponderous harmonising and big blasts of techy bombast. For the fourth, Silent Code takes the track on a techy tip, moving out to interstellar regions of neuro and jump up. Finally, OutSource continues the moddy technophile theme with a beautifully stretched out bassline. You need this.

Review: New York's venerable Mister Saturday Night imprint - an offshoot of Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin's party series of the same name - has spent the last couple of years building a reputation as a go-to label for those who like their house and techno eccentric and left-of-centre. Here, they present a showcase of their output to date that mixes previously vinyl-only singles - see Lumigraph's "Yacht Cruiser", the murky jazz-house flex of Archie Pelago's "Brown Oxford" and General Ludd's sweaty "Woo-Ha" - with a swathe of previously unreleased cuts. These are uniformly excellent, with the murky future voodoo of General Ludd's "C" and Archie Pelago's jazz-funk jam "Cinema Club" standing out.

"Steppin (Rollers remix)" is an all-out horns 'n beats roof raiser, taking those sizzling summer sounds to new heights with vintage samples and a touch of cheeky track switching antics. Fun and flavas - what more could you want?

Review: Early '90s hip-hop act Brand Nubian courted much controversy over their allegedly extremist views and sometimes homophobic lyrics. What often gets lost in all this fuss is the matter of the music, an expertly crafted melange of deft samples. Here Strictly Breaks pick apart those samples and provide us with 28 of the best vintage cuts used as source material by the band. Highlights include the cheery anthem "Sing A Happy Song", James Brown's highly electable "Funky President" and Kool & The Gang's immortal "Jungle Boogie".

Review: 40 Thieves long awaited debut album, The Sky Is Yours, was something of an epic; 10 years in the making, it stretched out across two CDs and four slabs of vinyl. Here, two tracks from the album get the remix treatment, with crate diggers-turned-party animals Psychemagik and Phil Mison's Cantoma outfit at the controls. Psychemagik's version of "The Sandpiper" is particularly good, delivering a heady, Arabic-influenced slice of chugging, eyes-wide-shut Balearica that benefits greatly from a rubbery groove and woozy chords. Mison takes a different approach on his rework of "The Sky Is Yours", laying down a version that sounds like T-Coy making late '80s Italian house. It is, all told, the epitome of Balearic house.

Review: What can be said about Paul SG that hasn't been said before? The man could give soul to the soulless. Representing this time for Jazzsticks, "Soulrider" is best described as a hybrid of old school drum & bass, old motown records recovered from the vault and the smoother than smooth theme from a '70s cop show that never came to be. Classy and smooth with a hint of humour. Rowpieces cuts in for the flipside with "Jazzmerising", a frenetic clash of hyper breaks and funk guitar (and even a vibraphone makes an appearance). Not imagining eating fondue aboard a luxury yacht in 1976 while listening to this? Friend, you're doing it wrong.

Review: The world of underground dance music may seem to be fracturing into ever-smaller subdivisions, but it's fair to say that no matter what your disposition is, the arrival of a new record from Sam 'Floating Points' Shepherd is generally something to be celebrated by all, especially given his last release was the single-sided Wires record last year. Naturally arriving via his own Eglo Records, the two track King Bromeliad is vintage Floating Points and offers two distinct sides to the Sam Shepard production palette. The title track commences with what could feasibly be a field recording of people gathered outside Plastic People before a rousing rhythm of jazz infused house comes bumping in and has you hooked for the next eight minutes. It's more than matched by the epic "Montparnasse" which exudes a more electronic approach over 11 heavenly minutes. Yes Sam!

Well, not quite - the second instalment in this series arrived two years ago, precisely half the time between that and the first one. So by our calculations the next one should arrive in a year's time. That gives us just enough time to fully absorb all 31 bangers featured here, including the backbeat swagger of "Ghetto Drunk", the shimmering '70s glamour of "Soul Sugar" and the lush, luxury disco of Timewarp's own remix of "Afrofunk".

Review: Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you might wonder why the Swedish duo haven't graced Gerd Janson's label before now. It may be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren't exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material, with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former's sublime offbeat number "Juno Jam" contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this release. In addition to the A-side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make "Joe Claussell proud".

Review: Do Aliens sunbathe? It would appear so as the ADS crew are back to mark the start of summer with four glistening '80s soul edits. The overall vibe is sunny and perfect for any pool parties you might be planning - "A Change In My Life" is razor sharp electro-funk culled from a sped up Bar Kays sample, The Village People's hi-NRG classic Sex Over The Phone gets abbreviated into a filtered disco fun, "Summer Night" is floaty sundown boogie and "Wasting Time" reworks Yarbrough & People's 1984 synth epic into a spacey seven-minute jam.

Knowing (DJ Break remix) - (5:01) 86 BPM
from $2.55
Review: Swiftly becoming a household name in UK bass, My Nu Leng have demonstrated nothing but class and creativity since day one. Signing to Black Butter has next-levelled them in the way they deserve, and they've just commissioned three powerful reversions of their material for the summer. UKG don Zed Bias has long since been an advocate of "Masterplan", and here he subverts it into a bashy, thundering blend that makes the original look like a lullaby. Next up, Cause & Effect's Lorenzo gets twisted on "You've Been Gone" by way of a paranoid nagging riff. Finally one of D&B's most respected producers Break takes "Knowing" into the 170 pastures it's always deserved to be in. Enveloping bass, resoundingly loose and organic drums and heaps of space... Just like My Nu Leng themselves, Break has demonstrated class and creativity since day one. What a release!

Ju Ken (feat Throwing Snow) - (5:38) 149 BPM
from $2.55
Review: Utopia bossman Mako steps up with three outrageously on-point cuts for the Metalheadz label. Each one slapping a different cheek of the dancefloor, we're flung from tearingly ugly rollers like "The Gully" to unique broken beat/jungle hybridisms on "Ju Ken" which comes with added input from the man like Throwing Snow featured. The main draw, however, will be "Tell Me Something" which sees Mako team up with Detail. Lush sense-popping synths blast spine-chilling chords and deep bass gurgles in every direction as it runs amok on a meticulous drum arrangement that never sits still. The truth is out there for those that seek it.

Feel It (feat Matrixxman) - (3:28) 129 BPM
from $2.55
Review: It's time for another slice of bumping, irreverent house music from the rowdy studio of Unknown To The Unknown's end-of-level boss, and Let's Get 2gether delivers on all the levels you would expect from the artist formerly known as Hot City. The title track bounces forth on a razor-sharp rendition of early '90s garage house, with the diva vocals and MIDI sax present and correct. "Clap Yo Handz" is equally swinging, except the smoother qualities have been usurped for grinding metallic chords and a roughness that DJ Duke would be proud of. Matrixxman lends a hand to "Feel It", which finds plush layers of melody making for a deeper finish, without losing that UTTU bite.

First Fires (feat Grey Reverend - Maya Jane Coles remix) - (5:52) 116 BPM
from $2.55
Review: Bonobo's North Borders album just keeps on giving... Here we find one of its many highlights, "Ten Tigers", getting a floor-minded rework by Bonobo himself. Retaining most of the original aspects, he's added a slightly heavier dynamic that's idea for all floors. Also on a remix-flex is UK starlet Maya Jane Coles who flips "First Fires" into a treacle-thick, bass heavy house driver. And if that's not quite enough, Bonobo has also given us a brand new track... "Duals" is a bright, breezy and skippy broken beat affair that's laced with myriad uplifting textures and counter melodies. In a word? Dreamy. Ten (tigers) out of ten.

Review: Want to hear something out of control? The ruffians from Hype's Playaz have come out to play for the seventh installment of the now legendary The Flavours series, and good gracious is it a scorcher. Featuring a tech-heavy stepper called "Very Exciting" (agreed) by newcomer Konichi to break you in, the second track is a deep, devastating roller courtesy of big man Philth with politically charged vox from P-Fine. The rest of the EP comes on strong with heavy-hitting tunes from Serum, the ever-gorgeous Chromatic and Nu Elements as well as some hugely promising newcomers. Do not sleep on this - you've been warned.

Review: JD Twitch seems to have an obsession with Italian music; amazingly, four of the first eight releases on the excellent - and typically hard to pin down - Optimo Trax imprint have come from Italian bands and producers. This second EP from Milanese twosome Boot & Trax fits into that category. It's as stylish and - on occasions - dark as you'd perhaps expect, variously being influenced by '80s industrial, fizzing post-punk, chugging Chicago house and strobelight electronica. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the hypnotic, left-of-centre Italian house revivalism of "Il Canto" and fuzzy "Ochhi Blu", to the energetic, darkwave-meets-punk funk rush of the irrepressible title track.

Review: Want a non-stop drum and bass LP of 13 tear out bangers? Optiv & BTK offer no respite on Blackjack with its hi-octane fuel for the dancerfloor. Tracks like "Shredder", "Weapon Of Choice", "Dirt Box" and "Snake Bite" are as knees up as they sound, while "Ground Shaker", "Nemisis" and "That Sound" are as rolling as they are breakbeat. Featured MCs include Ryme Tyme waxing casual drawls over frenetic arrangements while Nuklear takes you down 'deeper deeper deeper'. No misfires here.

Spanning the ranks of Serial Killaz themselves, Rebel MC, Run Tingz Cru, Top Cat & Tenor Fly and Tribe of Issachar as well as some very special guests, this is a hard dance treat for anybody with fire in their shoes. Those in the know will already expect blazing jump up stylings from the Serial Killaz crew but that's only the start of it. From beginning to end there's no let up - you step hard, or you go home. The choice is yours.

Review: Yes, The Godson is back doing his thing for Rush Hour! Detroit legend Rick Wilhite first put his compiling skills to play for the Amsterdam empire back in 2010 with the excellent Vibes New & Rare Music, an 11-track release that celebrated the role the esteemed selector and producer played in moulding local Detroit tastes as the head of the Vibes New & Rare Music record store. Theo Parrish, Glenn Underground and Marcellus Pittman all contributed, whilst the compilation also worked as a platform to introduce newer names such as Kyle Hall and Ricardo Miranda. A second volume is most welcome and expands Wilhite's remit to include music by producers from Detroit, Chicago and New York. The first of two double editions kicks off with a sublime production from Blaze's Josh Milan and doesn't let up on the heat, with Jovonn, K Alexi and a collaborative cut from Wilhite and Norm Talley amongst the highlights.
