25 Years Of KLP Records Interview

Hi Guys, Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Running a successful record label for 25 years is a monumental achievement.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves, and what you were doing 25 years ago before you decided to start KLP?

Music started for me in the mid 80's where me and a guy called Tico ( who I produced good body girl with ) had a sound system playing soul , reggae , rare groove and hip hop in and around the area we grew up in "Ladbroke grove" west London , then in the late 80's the acid house scene came along where I continued to DJ, in the early 90's once again I moved with the times with the hardcore scene and started DJing at clubs like Marquee, Busbys Astoria and then got a residency at the famous paradise club , then jungle and D&B came along!!

What was the catalyst that inspired you to start a label?

To be fair when I started the label it was just to release my own music as we didn’t have internet and social media back in them days so it wasn’t easy to find a platform elsewhere, unlike today where it’s easier to interact with other labels and producers hence why I’ve started releasing other producers music.

Did you have a goal or mission in mind when you first started off, or was the plan to just put out great music?

Not really , at first it was just to get my music out there, I remember my first release which was "Good body girl" I scraped together the money to press a 1000 tunes and at one point didn’t look like selling them , use to go around all the record shops and distributors and leave them some copies hoping that they would sell them , then all of a sudden the tune blew up and I sold 3000 copies and went on to remix the same tune with Kenny Ken and got involved with SRD distro who was the big guns.

How do you think D&B has changed over the past quarter century? Do you think it’s changed for the better, or given the chance, would you take it all back to the good ol days?

To be honest I think it’s good , D&B has split up in to so many different styles and could even say genres of music so there’s something there for everyone and would I take it back to the good old days ? don’t think so , there’s still a big following and market for the old skool and I don’t think that sound could ever be reproduced but saying that I would personally like to go back to the old days , maybe a couple of messy nights at paradise club falling out the door at 1pm in to chapel street market lol.

You must have a pretty hefty back catalogue of artists after being in the game so long, who was the most inspiring, hard working or favourite artist that you have worked with over the years?

To be fair I couldn’t pick one, I’ve been blessed to work with people like, Kenny Ken, Micky Finn to name a couple and I’ve had some great producers, some big names and some up and coming on my label so I’m happy.

To still be putting out music after 25 years is amazing, what would you credit to your success with KLP? Knowing your fans? Consistently putting out great music? always looking for the next big thing?

In recent times I’ve looked to up and coming producers who are working hard to get there name out there and can use my label as a platform and also had a shit load of established big names on board and any music I release I’ve got to like, I wouldn’t just release a tune if say! it’s a big name, I’ve defo got to be feeling it, as for my own music I produce like any other producer by the time you finish it and played it 1000's of times I start doubting it and I can only produce music I like personally I wouldn’t produce a style of music because it’s trending.

25 years Of KLP Records album is pretty special, can you tell us how you went about selecting the artists for the compilation?

First thing was to contact producers who I work with and who are regulars on my label to see if they wanted to remix any of my back cat that hasn’t already been remixed as I still have all my floppy disks for my akai sampler , then when social media got wind of the album producers starting sending me demos which is hard if you have to tell people no! but like I said I will only release music I like.

This might not be the easiest question, but can you share some of your favourite tracks from the album?

All of them lol.

Finally, what plans do you have for the future of KLP? Any shows or events on the horizon?

Hopefully to continue to release music people enjoy, and to keep a look out for more up and coming producers, whether I’m still doing this in another 25 years remains to be seen, but hopefully lol. And we did plan a night with jungle therapy to celebrate 25 years of KLP and the line was going to be as many DJ's from the album that we could squeeze in, but the timing was wrong, so we are going to reschedule. Big thanks to all the producers I work with on the label and to all the people who enjoy and support what we do.
