Review: Whenever we see Deadly Habitz back in action, we get a little bit excited to say the least, with this latest four tracker on Lost City Archives providing us with instant jitters. We begin with the nostalgia-inducing chords and groovy vocal overlays of 'Henney & Coke', an instant rave-ready rinseout, with 'Got Me Burning' then providing a more niche-inspired 4x4 splatter. We jump into more 2-step inspired switch ups next as 'Happy Daze' unleashes a smoothened sweep through choppy vocal slices and booming subs below, with the rough-house bass rolls of 'It's The Way' then giving us a smoothened outro, closing out the tracklisting with a certified slap of original garage tang.

Like This (Sharda remix) - (3:18) 138 BPM
Review: Once again, Conducta's Kiwi crew are back in business, unveiling the latest heavyweight garage heat from Prozak, who delivers a serious bombshell across three sizzling creations. We begin with 'Like This', a super choppy swing through high intensity drum progressions and euphoria-inducing synthesiser work, combining the nostalgic with the now in perfect balance. From here, we then drop into the super droopy sub warbles of 'Shine', which inject a secondary layer of energy into the EP, with Sharda then arriving on remix duty to close things off, giving 'Like This' a colourful overhaul, full the brim with unique rhythmic expression.

In The Morning - (5:10) 135 BPM
Wickedest Sound - (6:28) 135 BPM
Review: The legendary Jeremy Sylvester is back in fine form with this fiery display, unloading four dancefloor-ready rollers with some real throwback feelings, courtesy of course of Time Is Now. We open up with the nostalgic chord progressions and heavily reverberated soundscapes of '90's Man', which sets the tone perfectly, followed by 'Flashback', a sleeklike roller doused in electronic energy. From here 'In The Morning' arrives to unleash a more subtle bubbling feeling, focussing on moogy basslines and refreshing pad arrangements, before the heavily sampled vocal chops and icey synth sweeps of 'Wickedest Sound' close off the EP with a bang

O.G - (5:33) 138 BPM
Body - (5:43) 137 BPM
Review: Instinct remains at the forefront of the UK garage scene thanks to more heat like this from Main Phase. He follows up standout tunes on the likes of Time Is Now, Dansu Discs and Lost City Archives with his most complete statement yet. Opener 'Treat Me Right' is a lively stepper with lush hits and a wobbling bottom end. 'Whale Dub' gets darker and more stripped back but swings just as infectiously, then 'Nuff' layers up brain-melting bass with rude vocals and 'OG' ups the energy with a pumping old school sound and plenty of characterful details. There is more retro garage gold on closer 'Body' to make this a hugely useful EP.

Review: The Southpoint train continues to drive forward, welcoming some of the best and most exciting new garage and breaks talents in their already well established hall of greats, this time seeing ODF arrive for a fiery debut drop. We open up with 'Riddim & Flow', a powerhouse speedy g slapper, diving perfectly between high energy drum shakes, square-wave bass notation and tight rhythmic designs. On the flip to this, a major switch up as 'B-Side Bubbler' delivers a much more old school feeling, combining broken-beat drum work with moody subs and a clean finish, giving us a near perfect switch up from A to B.

Review: Zed Bias's superb recent single with Shumba Youth is a modern fusion of dancehall and ragga that is perfect for loud deployment on top sound systems. Here though it comes in four different versions, all of which tap into different aspects of the UK hardcore continuum. The 4x4 Garage mix is just that and perfect for grotty warehouses, the 4x4 VIP Refix has a more prominent baseline feel and the Jeftuz UKG remix is a broken beat killer with wub-wub goodness. Last of all is the restless and kinetic 2-step mix to close out a high grade remix EP.

Review: It's clear to all who follow electronic music with any level of regularity that Om Unit has become one of the most consistently impressive names to follow, with the last decade of work showcasing creativity and sonic innovation with every new outing. This latest 'Fragments' album project sees those talents again at work, from the moogy bass flicks on 'Snagged' to the icey soundscaping of 'Entity' and super sharp drum processing of 'Side Quest'. This album showcases mastery at work, with Om Unit again proving to be a level above those around him, with highlights including the colourful melodic squelches of 'Moonglade' and breaks-inspired energy-boosting qualities of 'Hard Skin'. Top work, as always!

DJ Crisps - "On My Way" - (5:14) 137 BPM
Oldboy - "Extender" - (4:51) 135 BPM
Review: DJ Crisps is starting to make some handy garage moves after a couple of various artists' appearances and a fine EP on Time Is Now Germany in July. Now they link up with Oldboy who appeared on Burnski's other label Vivid back in 2022. As you should expect these are four hardcore and rudely garage cuts with plenty of swagger, naughty samples and bass-face potential. 'On My Way' is the standout with its shuffling one-two drum punch, distant police sirens and warped basslines underneath a timeless and irresistible female vocal full of soul. A summer scorcher for sure alongside three more very useful weapons.

Styla (Main Phase remix) - (5:55) 135 BPM
Ruff Dub (original mix) - (4:34) 135 BPM
Review: Get your best-worst bass face ready and cock those gun fingers cause Instinct is back with more rude as you like garage. Prozak takes care of this one with the old school vibes of 'Styla' first up. It's got ragga vocals, bleeps and blistering bass set to a prickly garage beat that cannot fail to make a mark. The Main Phase remix is a more traditional garage sound with crisp hits and great swing. 'Ruff Dub' ups the ante and gets even more nawty and nasty while 'Gravedigger' brings a dark sense of swing to shut down another fine EP.

3FALL - (2:15) 138 BPM
Vectra (feat Paul Stephan) - (2:55) 138 BPM
Review: The Kiwi crew have been coming in clutch for a large selection of 2023, with their releases being more spread out but all the more potent. This time around, head-honcho Conducta jumps on board for a fiery collection, opening up with an old school roller in 'Get Busy With It', flipping a tasty Novelist vocal skit into a rave-ready anthem, followed by the more emotive melodics and grizzly synth sweeps of '3FALL'. Next, 'Stratus' arrives with a much more summer-fuelled feeling, linking up glistening organ chords with choppy vocals, followed by the catchy Paul Stephan vocal cameo on 'Vectra', a more breaks-inspired subby bubbler. Finally, BIJI joins the party for 'Gold', a high-octane sprint through sub-busting bass tones and energetic drum skips, giving us a fiery finale. Lovely work.

Review: Next up from MPH, a trip over to AEI for another dance-inspiring five track outing, exploring the most fragrant areas of new school garage music from start to finish. We open up with the late-coming summer sounds of 'Crash & Burn', a beautiful link up with Lauren L'aimant, who lets fly a palpable box of vocal tricks. Next, a more breaks-driven idea as 'Overrated' sees chopped up drums and staunch subs meet, with the bouncy basslines of 'Show Me' and more subtle drum sweeps of 'Promise' then following in hot pursuit. We then check out the finale for the EP in 'Bad Day', a sumptuous combination of wistful vocals and tidily arranged drums, giving us a softened touch down to close.

We open up with 'Ominous Arrival', a fluctuating combination of high energy rhythms and subtle vocal samples, followed by both the industrial synth thumps of 'Sine DNA' and arpeggio-lead soundscaping of 'Circular' to follow. Review: Whenever we see a new entry from the Time Is Now crew, we know it's time to pull on our dancing shoes and turn up the energy, with this latest three track collection from DJ Crisps being a seriously spicy box of rave-inspired goodness. We open up with 'You Stay On My Mind', a vocal-infused sweep through big room drum work and airy pads in the background, culminating in a 2-step slammer to turn the dance into a zoo. On the flip to this, we then get to explore 'Never Gonna Stop', a chord driven slink through American vocal slices and smooth sublines, with the abstract sine-wave pulses of 'Flat Bass' then taking the EP down a more industrial route. For its crunchy finale, the project then rounds off with the tidy percussive skips and distant reverberations of 'Critical Theory' as the Time Is Now crew continue to cook.

We open up with 'Know We', a melting pot of nostalgic patois vocal overlays, classic grimey string melodies and moody subs, setting the tone perfectly for Main Phase. On the flip to this, a slight switch up in proceedings as Stones Taros deploys a war-ready box of moody LFO drifts, choppy garage-style drum arrangements and catchy vocal samples, making up a vibrant B-side and closing off the PE in styles.

We begin with the slightly quirky synth work of 'Wait No More', a trundling crunch through choppy drum breaks and distant radar signals, with the more stripped back, broken-beat approach of 'Lovin Me' in hot pursuit. From here, the system rattling bass rumbles and chest-bumping kick pumps of 'Real Love' arrive in serious style, amping the ravers up to the top of their trees, to be met by the beautiful organ work and tight drum processing of 'Fly' for an emotive landing. First up, Big Skeez leaps into action as an honorary guest on the silky smooth 'House Check', providing party-starting vocals over the top of bulbous bassy sweeps and gnarly LFO action, before 'Don't Say It' ups the levels even further with a jittering combination of tight percussive processing and vocal sampling. We dive into some tidy 2-step flavour next as 'Yu' leads the way with some haunted bass manipulation and skippy drum arrangements, before the breaks-infused subby landscapes of 'Breathe Deep' allow us to see off the EP in style. Review: The Time Is Now team are looking solid beyond belief at the moment as they unveil another killer drop, this time from the futuristic fusion-heavy sounds of Bakey, who lands three potent originals for us all to enjoy. The title track 'Take It Further' is a perfect blend of breakbeat and garage themes, combining crispy drum expressions with vibrant, pulsating subs to really get the party started. Following this, the nostalgic broken 2-steppy beats and unpredictable sub manoeuvres of 'Cobra' work some real magic before rounding off on the stripped back yet extremely potent arrangements of '1002', again utilizing powerful subs, but this one with an angelic sounding padded twist.

Review: Burnski's Instinct label serves up some fresh platters from a new name, Papa Nugs. These are of course naughty as you like garage tinged late night gems for cosy dance floors. Opener 'Gemini' is a high speed affair with exotic strings and neck-snapping hits. 'Kilo of Filo' is a super heavy wobbler with a fat as fuck bottom end oscillation. 'De Nata' closes out on more super crisp breakbeats that recall the genres hey day when artists like Ali B were knocking out killer mixes for Fabric. All killer no filler, as ever with this label.

Fresh One - The Remixes
49
Fresh One (Hunter Starkings remix) - (4:59) 136 BPM
Review: Released midway through November 2022, Desert Sound Colony's 'Fresh One' is a deliciously difficult to pigeonhole affair that combines elements of electro, techno and tech-house. This fine suite of revisions takes the track in umpteen new directions too. The EP-opening CalMCee version is a druggy, low-slung tech-house tweak, the Shli remix a bustling breakbeat affair, and the Stolen Laptop remix a blend of ULG, electro and post-dubstep heaviness. Those seeking breathless techno intensity should check the SDS Max Hammer Drill remix, or embrace the two-step shuffle, warped bass and sparkling synth sounds of the Hunter Starkings remix. Elsewhere, Sosti's revision is a mind-mangling, echoing and acid-fired affair, while Laurdrup's revision is deep, rolling, sub-heavy ad subtly informed by 1990 bleep and breaks.

Review: It's always good to see the DJQ train continuing to run, being one of the true pioneers of bass music in this country. He has once again landed on Local Action for a vibrant collection, this time seeing the past become remade with 'Est. 2003 Remixed'. We are greeted by a host of wonderful garage names, from Todd Edwards & Flava D to Al Wooton & Baltra, giving us a full spectrum of new school garage ideas with a tasty dash of old school to match. The project is an undeniable success in celebrating the endless career of DJQ, with our out and out highlights including the awesome Soul Mass Transit System rework of 'I Couldn't See', originally from DJQ & Wolfie, alongside Jeremy Sylvester's tidy relick of Speedy G's, originally featuring Finn. Awesome work!
