Review: One year in and the 'House of Disco' label continues to move from strength to strength. The label, spawned from a blog to which is shares it's name, has risen majestically to the top of an ever increasing pile of disco imprints. There is no real mystery surrounding its success, only the best productions and edits find their way onto the labels releases, carefully hand picked with due care and attention. The digital age has made owning a label no longer the pastime of millionaire playboys with a penchant for cylindrical percussive instruments, any Tom, Dick & Harry can claim to own a label these days, and often all three do... it would be churlish to suggest there are no decent digital only imprints out there, a couple of labels spring to mind, however, the discerning jock understands that any label willing to take the time, effort and risk of pressing up some vinyl must really believe in what they are doing and have a deep understanding of the scene's DJs and fans. This, the fourth release on the label entitled 'Busy Tone EP' is a great example of the complimentary A&R which is a mainstay of the label. First up we have a slo-mo looper from Scottish producer (Ali) OOFT! The track respectfully uses a synth and vocal sample from disco group 'Maze', slowly building into a real crowd pleaser. Next up we have German duo Daniel Solar & Andi De Luxe, taking time out from running their own label (Dikso) to drop the string led dance floor bomb 'Seventh'. 'Debonair' makes his second outing on the 'House of Disco' this time turning in an impeccable rework of the Garage classic 'Just How Sweet is Your Love'. And last up we have loop master 'Late Nite Tuff Guy' who brings the EP to a chugging finale, amazing strings and a hypnotic beat make this one of the highlights of the EP. Collectively; this is a great package, individually; all the tracks are must haves.

Review: Sheffield's Project Allout don't mess about, having developed a reputation for championing all directions in the ways of bass. Every take on that three letter word is important to this label and that's why they cram so many hot jams onto their comps. Basically they're the Ferrero Rocher am-bass-adors and they are really spoiling us with 49(!) lengerz. Highlights include AT's bleepy 8-bit hip-hop groove "Flash Bang", the epic, symphonic trap of Dubzta's "Lord Of War" and the almost disco tech grooves of "Murkers' by King Hydra. All killer, no filler!

Review: Serum & Heist: the only way this can get any heavier is if the EP came with a free elephant. It doesn't, but pachyderms ain't necessary when these two pack punches like this. Pure KO science in every tune, highlights include the breath taking groan on Serum's "Soul Travelling", the filtered waves of funk and wobbled-out subs on Heist's "Via The Shires", the jazzy twinkles and bouncy bassline charge on "People Of Earth" and classic Zinc-style dreamy twist up on "Soul Grapes". That's before we even mention the killer nature of "Setup" and "Moon Unit". Six b-line scuds, two absolute legends. You know what to do.

Review: Having come to the fore via some rather divisive edits of Dorian Concept, Steve Reich and Mariah Carey, the Stockholm based producer HNNY serves notice of his capacity for original productions with this rather fine release on the Local Talk label. This fifteenth release for Mad Mats' resolutely deep house operation maintains the standards set by previous emissions, and it's easy to see why opening track "For The Very First Time" has already been embraced by HNNY's former overseers Studio Barnhus. That all too authentic take on the early 90s NYC house sound is a good primer for what to expect from hereon in, with the similar equation of pitched vocal snatches craftily twisted around infectious yet simplistic melodic motifs and thick bass lines also characterising "Apricots". Do check the percussive 10 minute long behemoth that is "Trummor" for an example of what else HNNY can do - an expert DJ tool in the mould of how they used to be done, back in those days.

Review: The Chopshop juggernaut - driven by DJ Butcher - shows no signs of slowing down. Here we have Jammin, a bulging compilation express featuring 12 sizzlers by many label favourites. There's a lot to boogie to here, and it'll all get the job done, but the best include Alkalino's cheeky house remake of Prince's Get Off ("23 Positions"), Jayl Funk's sensuous electro-boogie bomb "Do It Baby" and Butcher's own rework of Rockwell's '80s office party fave "Somebody's Watching Me". Basically all your party worries will be sorted in one with this package!

Review: Nothing says happy new year better than a 33-track jungle package. Ripping into the year in the same spirit they shredded 2016 with, DITJ have delivered something serious special here as some of modern jungle's finest creative minds: the never-failing DJ Hybrid slams the hammer down with the enormous VIP of "What Else", RMS continues his rich vein of form with some dagger-like samplecraft on the dancehall scorching "Burning Up", Section conjures up the spirit of Raindance past with some crafty drum-dicing "Black Magic" while Evade will turn you inside out on his trippy-assed amen omen "Reverse"... And that's just four of over thirty moments. Trust... We can't stress how massive this is.

Review: Paper Recordings' reputation precedes them in house circles. Now however, they've bitten the bullet and dived into the deep end of the disco pool with this compilation (on sub label Paper Disco) of current nu-disco producers and edit heroes. It's a brave comp that tackles every interpretation of disco, including 2 Billion Beats' deep '80s synth groover "See Us Through", Richard Seabourne's bizarre funk-goes-doomy 303 workout "This Is Acid" and Mezman's bass heavy, dream-pad odyssey. We're looking forward to plenty more disco thrills from this new stable!

Review: Since signing Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive to his Metalheadz imprint last year, Goldie has acted as a kind of mentor, supervising the recording of this debut album. In many ways, it makes a lot of sense; Ulterior Motive's brand of jungle-influenced drum and bass no doubt appeals to the producer-turned-celebrity's rave sensibilities. The Fourth Wall is a confident and engaging debut, with spangling, piano-laden rave moments - see the early '90s revivalism of "Tape Pack" - nestling side by side with dark, twisted rollers and deeper, more experimental fare. It's this latter strand - and most particularly the James Sutherland collaboration "Muted" - that makes The Fourth Wall such an impressive debut.

Review: Here Z Records boss Joey Negro presents his own take on the everlasting 90s revival. Just like on all his other projects he's dug deeper to present gems the label say may have until now slipped under the garage doors (i.e. haven't yet been granted digital immortality). Highlights of these 26 rarities include Robert Owens' smooth n' sultry synth jam "Gotta Work", the bitchy disco of "Unique" by Danube Dance & Kim Cooper and the raw attitude of Mike Delgado's "The Murder Track". With this fine release, who needs a time machine?

Review: Upgrade is one of those jump-up producers who just does stuff properly. You'll never listen to his music and wish it was slightly heavier, or slightly this or slightly that - it's always bang on and naughty as can be. 'Deluded' kicks off his latest Low Down Deep EP with a truly menacing vocal sample that has buckets of suspense, making the weighty jump-up force on the drop all that sweeter. 'All This Molly' is just more raw vibes, a blast of energy that keeps on giving the whole way through - what this genre is known for encapsulated in one tune. 'Cali Pots' is just so raucous and rowdy that you can picture the mosh pits as it lands and the same goes for 'Badness', both carrying a grating forcefulness that makes you want to something painful. Another top EP from one of the best in the jump up game.

Review: French funkateer Vas lays down four more floor-focussed edits. "Tell Me" gives Mayfield a turbo-charged groove restructure. Thumping, unashamed funk, it will ignite any party within a 20 mile radius. "The Q" then shoots us straight up into a space with a subtle touch on Doctor Dru's cult cosmic jam "The Voice Of Dru". Dig deeper for the infectious party chants of Trouble Funk edit "What Funk" before Vas shuts us down with the best edit of the set... A gritty, low-down take on Cameo's "Keep It Hot", it's guaranteed to ignite big moves.

Review: Cheekily, Todd Terje has decided to put out these remixes of forthcoming album track "Jungelknugen" before we've had a chance to hear the original version. While it's hard to know how revolutionary these remixes are - or otherwise - it's fair to say that both Four Tet and Prins Thomas have brought their A-game. Keiran Hebden steps up first, layering up looped, kosmiche style synthesizer refrains, wide-eyed piano motifs, low-slung analogue bass, and the kind of jazzy, off-kilter drum machine beats that simultaneously feel loose and sturdy. While undoubtedly impressive, it lacks the hustle and bustle of Prins Thomas's interpretation, which is drive forwards by heavy, bleep techno style sub bass and the producer's own groovy disco drums.

Review: Technique Recordings, founded by Drumsound & Bassline Smith back in 1999, is turning 20 this year and they're releasing a huge remix compilation to celebrate. Featuring remixes from artists old and new of Technique's best tracks, mostly originals from the founders themselves, this album stretches across 27 heavy, dancefloor numbers. The first outing, a remix of 'Come With Me' by Bladerunner, is classic KoTR vibes and we love the array of twisting, snarling basses that fans of this producer will recognise. Shouts also to Digital for his swirling remix of 'I Need Somebody', featuring some classic amens, and also Smooth for his popping remix of Tantrum Desire's 'Vybez'. Top stuff from a stalwart of the scene.

Review: In 2015 DJ Harvey made his hugely anticipated return to Ibiza and made Pikes the home for his Mercury Rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real Ibiza, the incredible history of the hotel (aka The Chelsea of Ibiza) and a genuine love for music. This Balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by DJ Harvey has seen Mercury Rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade. The next step in the story sees him launch Pikes Records - the first record label founded by Pikes owners and Ibiza Rocks co-founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. From his own Locussolus project's slow burner "Next To You" (Marcy Rising edit), to fellow London disco heroes Idjut Boys who serve up "One For Kenny" where they get really deep. There's also party favourite Gatto Fritto with "Invisible College" and Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan, on form as always, with Chris Munoz on the scorcher "Zona De Perigo".

Review: Razor 'N' Tape has been slowly expanding its' outlook in recent years, focusing on original productions just as much as re-edits. Here, they've pulled off something of a coup by snapping up two fresh cuts from Dutch heavyweights Kraak & Smaak. There's the clipped Chic guitars, jaunty analogue bass, undulating Syclops lead lines and gravelly soul vocals of "Way Back Home", and the filter-heavy disco-house throb of "Seb's Party". The package also includes two tasty re-rubs apiece from Ben Sun and Tiger & Woods. Sun offers up a smooth, nu-disco/deep house fusion, followed by a chunkier, classic house sounding affair, while Tiger & Woods offer two superb variants on the same throbbing, electrofunk-meets-Balearic piano house template.

Review: MCs don't come much more legendary than Birmingham's Bassman, labels don't come much more on point than Souped Up: Everything about this release stacks up in our favour. And that's before we get to the fact the remixes of Bassman's 2009 classic are none other than Serum and Bou & Simula. First up we find the label boss diving deep with his signature sheet metal groans while men-of-the-moment Bou & Simula get jiggy with more of a trippy, haunted rippled effect. Remixes don't come much more hench than this.

Review: A breakers banquet sounds like quite a messy affair - all those head spinning moves sending plates of food flying in all directions. Cris Crucial's Flawless EP thankfully fails to make a mess. Instead he delivers and unapologetically retro riot of late-80s, early-90s hip house jams that are all about the party. Highlights include the big beat scratch-a-thon "Anything Funky", the laid-back gangster funk of "Big Crucial Thing" and the 60s funk-sampling instrumental "Trouble Bucket".

Review: Whilst others are only just getting back to speed, re-edit chiefs Editorial have already been back delivering a packed schedule of choice jams since January. The heat doesn't let up yet either with this new multi-artist mini comp. Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee start proceedings with the uplifting clavinet boogie of "Peoples Groove" and Matt Hughes' "Sunshine" takes what sounds like a subtle O'Jays sample and gives it a laid back disco sheen. Elsewhere The Owl's "Pimp Talk" provides perfect evening cocktails by the pool vibes and Rahaan closes the show with the chic electro-boogie of "Fine Feelings".

Review: "Mind Biscuit": Something tasty for your brain to chew on while your feet mulch up the dancefloor. Auckland crew Monkey Boots lay down two jack-slapping originals that dig deep into the true deep house psyche. "Impossible Need" comes with smoky vocal and smouldering bass vibes on the groove while "Yearning For You" slaps with a lighter sensation, all wafty minor key organs and soul-stirring vocals. Remix-wise Reed & Radley subvert "Yearning For You" with a little more space and reverbed magic while The Phantom Flan Flinger gets all reflective and shimmering on the Balearic bomb "Lullaby For Spiderman". Beautiful.

Review: The latest from the Greek label Carnibal sees their stars Plaov and Panama Cardoon lend their nu-funk and Latin/cumbia production skills to an epic version f "Popcorn", as well as fusing in hip hop/bashment energy on "Summer of a Fool".

Review: The debut release on the Party Breaks offshoot of the always classy On The Prowl label set the tone with epic reimaginations of music from the New York City of days gone by for contemporary dancefloors. It's safe to say that volume II, compiled by label co-chief Jacques Renault, will further solidify OTP Party Breaks' potential as one of 2010s best imprints. Doubling the sucker punch with four edits that dip into different genres and play out like textbook examples of how to slay a dancefloor (you'd expect nothing less from someone who has released music on Rekids, DFA, I'm a Cliche, RVNG, Wurst, Chinatown and Mule). Setting the uptempo mood is "In The Middle of The Night", a subtley nuanced edit of a slice of classic late 70s disco from Jet Brown that adds some neat percussive chops to what is already a lovely warm melody. Fans of Tensnake's recent "Coma Cat" will be all over "Love & Happiness", a dirty basement jam that reworks a mid nineties collaboration between Louie Vega and long term muse India to perfection. Renault's production nous is on evidence with "Miranda" which begins with some very Switch-esque production before dropping into a massive jack of a tribal house groove with several little changeups to keep the dancefloor on its toes. The EP ends with "My Baby Loves Me" which amps up the 80s sax house to the max. More must have material from the record vaults of Jacques Renault.

Review: Biological Beats and DJ Limited is somewhat of a fiery combination, the pair of them together packing a back catalogue of music that, more often than not, is downright dirty. Louder is a vindication of that and the selection throughout this release is so on-point and so in-touch with current styles of D&B it's a little absurd, you can almost picture the videos on Facebook as each of these drop. 'Gunfinger' featuring Fatman D is the unique one of the bunch, a steppy, Diemantle-esque cut that chops and changes the whole way through; 'Bad Tune' is our favourite, its wobbling sub-bass riff guides you down into a steam-train bassline that sounds a lot like a Serum cut or similar. The other five are also all definitely worth your time.

Review: Eyal Goldman has been notching up a whole bunch of feelgood re-edits under the guise of Funk Sinatra. Not sure what ol' blue eyes would make of it all, but with breaky rejigs of perennial faves by the likes of Sam & Dave, Dylan, Don Covay and Area Code 615 (the Old Grey Whistle Test theme), we're sure dancefloors up and down the country will give it the big thumbs up.

Review: Last year, Melbourne's Harvey Sutherland signaled his arrival in emphatic fashion with the acclaimed Brothers EP for Voyage Recordings - a sumptuous, soul-flecked EP of boogie-influenced deep house. Here, he continues to impress with a superb tracks for Dani Plessow's MCDE imprint. "Bermuda" is deliciously warm and summery, with jaunty boogie synths and cascading chords riding a smooth, shuffling deep house groove. "New Paradise" works the same formula hard, with dreamy, held-note chords and bubbly synthesizer melodies wrapping themselves around loose, analogue-sounding percussion and a rich bassline. If there were any doubts about his talents moving forward, this should dispel them. Clearly, Sutherland is here to stay.
