Review: SHDW's label marks its twentieth release with this weighty compilation. Drawing on some of the most respected names in techno, volume three is full of peak-time bangers. There's the lean, rolling techno of Chlar's "Inside Us", while Dax J showers the listener with waves of acid tones on the steely, peak-time "Celestial Dub". The Advent's "Randomized" is a bruising and quite brilliant industrial techno workout. While Blawan's hyperactive "Don't You Dare Squawk At Me" hovers just below the 160 bpm mark, not all of the compilation is as intense. Vocals are mixed with chiming chords on Gary Beck's "Fold" and Z.I.P.P.O's "Broken Game" is a deep Detroit techno track.

No word, no warning, no hype, no histrionics; just king DRS casually dropped a new album sized mixtape full of brand new originals with artists such as Dogger, Sl8r, Chiccoreli, Zar, Disrupta and Mindstate (to name a few) Loaded with interesting skits and interludes, along with a full mix version, this is DRS at his most wide armed, soulful and vibrant. Juiced up with plenty of fodder for the soulful DJs to spin, but sculpted as a musical experience, this is an amazing deep dive into the deepest corners of Delrokski's soul.

Review: Four40 have been known for their cultivation of talent since their inception, with this latest offering seeing the monstrous flavours of bullet tooth land for a much awaiting link up. Across these five tracks, we see exactly what bullet tooth is all about, with the moody sub pulses of 'Your Love' and crunching drum stutters of 'Immaculate Skank' giving us a truly vibrant experience. Killa P then touches down for a hard hitting vocal performance on the heavily syncopated slides of 'Brand New Day', followed by the pacey breaks-driven drum lines of 'Love Sensation'. Finally, we round off with a more subtle piece of soundscaping entitled 'Signal', bringing a touch of calm to bring this awesome debut drop to a close.

Review: V Recordings do some of the best compilations in the business and their brand new Foundation series is a natural recognition of that fact. They're not being hyperbolic with the usage of the term 'Foundation' either, because this is truly an overview of some of the scene's most foundational producers. Old-school Dillinja, Krust, Roni Size and DJ Die, amongst others, make up the roster of acts that formed an integral part of the genre back in the day. Review: As 2023 starts to wrap up, Manchester label Nuusic take the time to reflect on the year they've had and bring their many releases together in one comprehensive collection. Looking back over key releases such as Guzi's album Goldstone Life, Grimesy's 'Voices' and Conrad Subs' 'Don't Blame The DJ', there's a powerful range of party starters, bubblers, skankers and slappers. To pick just a few highlights from 30 is pretty hectic, but Tweakz' jazzy planet stamper 'Love & loyalty', Rise's creeped out 'Intertwined' and Guzi & Epicentre's walloping 'Rate My Switch' are a great place to start. Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Review: Man of the moment DJ Hybrid goes turbo once again with this absolutely storming jungle EP. You know the drill when the Deep In The Jungle bossman is involved - pure fire in all directions... Review: It's no secret that the team at Exit have a legendary catalogue, which they have decided to celebrate for their 100th official drop. This Part One of the "EXIT100" compilation series features some serious heavyweights, including Itoa, Dolenz, Sertone & Addison Groove to name a few. The pure range that we get is also awesome to take in, from Fixate's stunning drum production work in "Dead End", to the skippy, juke-inspired skips of "Tell Me Something" from Sun People and the acidic adventure we are taken on in Borderlandstate_the Best Kisser In L.a.'s "Minimal Input". We couldn?t round off without discussing "Wasted" however, as Dub Phizix dive down a truly unique avenue for them, unveiling a mind-melting soundscape that would leave a tear in the eye of the staunchest electronic music fan. Top quality stuff!

Review: In an industry where the term 'veteran' is bandied about far too freely, Colin Curtis is the real deal! His DJing career goes all the way back to legendary Northern Soul club The Golden Torch in the late 60s. In the 70s, he was a resident at Blackpool Mecca alongside Ian Levine, where he became one of the first DJs to introduce the more modern sound of jazz-funk to the scene. By the mid-80s he'd become an early UK champion of house, too, but these days it's on the jazz-dance scene that he's most revered - and here he serves up a 26-track connoisseur's collection that shows why. Ranging from straight-up jazz and soul to soulful house and leaning heavily towards the Afro- and Latin-flavoured, some of these cuts are recent offerings, some date back as far as the 70s, but on jazz-dance floors, all will go down a treat.

Review: We often wonder if there is anything that can stop the combined powers of both Soul Mass Transit System & Time Is Now in collaboration, but we then remembered, why would anyone want that. This gorgeous collection showcases just how strong this power-coupling is, with 'Nobody Else But U' leading the way in a wash of silky subs and groovy vocal chops. From here, 'Break Ur Heart' continues to have a high energy feel, with more rampant 4x4 energy running wild, followed by 'Cookin Up Yer Brain' for another sumptuous dose of old school energy. We then close off proceedings with 'Stand By Me' venturing into the realms of jungle, amalgamating choppy breaks and booming 808s for a vibrant finale.

Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. The line-up features all the usual suspects (The Allergies, Ivo FitzRoy, Flevans, Smoove & Turrell and label bosses Skeewiff) as well as a handful of newer names, and if you're a fan of the label's trademark blend of funk, soul, breaks and hip-hop - with the emphasis this time out firmly on the soul side - then it's hard to see how you'd end up dissatisfied here. Standouts for yours truly include Wolfgang Valbrun's 'Cyclone', with its big, cavernous production redolent of 60s/northern soul, and Mr Doris & D-Funk's rapped homage to UK childhood 'Back In The Day', but you'll doubtless find your own favourites...

Review: For the latest release on her own label, Charlotte de Witte returns to her underground roots. The title track is a dense, rolling techno track peppered with insistent acid lines and a hypnotic vocal refrain. "Pria" also features the sound of the human voice. On this occasion, it's in the form of a chant that unravels over an acid-trance backing that calls to mind 90s classics like "Desert Storm". In a release full of surprises, de Witte leaves the best one to last. "Abada" is an evocative piece of ambient music featuring a spellbinding vocal - further proof of the KNTXT owner's musical evolution.

Review: Marking a new era for DNO Records, PLLFRY introduces the Overexciting EP, a five-track release brimming with raucous halftime beats and collaborations with vocalists NST and Genoveva. Thriving on iron-clad percussion and a blend of mangled sonic futurism, yet it consistently centred around a powerful, unfiltered bass presence - tracks like "Demolition" and "Collapse Of The System" live up to their names, delivering destructive basslines and chaotic beats that shatter the norm. The title track showcases a nuanced contrast, with a serpent-like bassline, ethereal vocals from Genoveva, and intricate hi-hats. Review: Following in the footsteps of the likes of A Skillz, Beatvandals and The Allergies, Boca 45 helms the latest in Bomb Strikes' 'Funk N' Beats' compilation/mix album series, which has been running since 2013. As ever, Vol 10 features an eclectic, party-hearty mix of funk, hiphop and breaks jams, with wicky-wicky scratch sounds applied liberally. Notable inclusions this time around include two "never heard it like that before" covers of classics from the Spencer Davis Group and (sure to please footy fans) Gala, as well as Western Roots' reggae/ska-infused 'Bogus Daddy', while the bundled DJ mix version from Boca 45 showcases these sounds as they're really meant to be heard.
