Review: In 2015 DJ Harvey made his hugely anticipated return to Ibiza and made Pikes the home for his Mercury Rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real Ibiza, the incredible history of the hotel (aka The Chelsea of Ibiza) and a genuine love for music. This Balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by DJ Harvey has seen Mercury Rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade. The next step in the story sees him launch Pikes Records - the first record label founded by Pikes owners and Ibiza Rocks co-founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. From his own Locussolus project's slow burner "Next To You" (Marcy Rising edit), to fellow London disco heroes Idjut Boys who serve up "One For Kenny" where they get really deep. There's also party favourite Gatto Fritto with "Invisible College" and Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan, on form as always, with Chris Munoz on the scorcher "Zona De Perigo".

Review: Four years after Future Perfect, Ram's mighty Loadstar return with their second album I Need The Night. Has the wait been worth it? Of course it has. If anything, this is better than their debut due to its consistency and arrangement. With much more of a flow and dynamic, the duo previously known as Xample & Lomax, showcase their finest skills with a sense of boldness and breadth; from the all-out jump-up assault "All Junglists" and the brutal "Give Yourself" to the gospel-level soul burner "Walking On Water" and soft focus dreamer "Diamonds", this is Loadstar at their most confident and consistent, operating with total clarity.

Review: ooohhh - the calculating Night Bass imprint returns to some quick fire action thanks to this naughty VA comp - and the results are as impressive as they are, well, booty-shaking. There's a whole line of stars in the making here, with peeps like AC Slater, Phlegmatic Dogs and Petey Clicks all offering their various new strains of high-grade bass mutations. In fact, much like the label's wider catalogue, these future-minded bangers are a mixed race fo sorts; from speedy garage to teched-out house and dubstep, there's something in here for all lovers of the UK ting. Yes, yes!

Review: Ivy Lab's Halogenix invites into his wardrobe for a cheeky fashion parade on Perez's 1985. Riffling through his range of jumpsuits, he treats us to a range of outfits; first we have his And Alix's slinky skin-tight "Broken" which groans with such bass pressure it's hard to breathe, then we have the loose and floaty two-tone outfit "The Night" with Solah where light shades refresh each other with raw soul. Deeper down the rails we glide for a minimal low cut roller laced with rich wavy synths and a hip-hugging breakbeat. Finally the acid-bubbling, block-knocking title track is a bulletproof heat resistant jumpsuit; the likes of which are usually worn by superheroes... Heroes like you when you drop this to an unexpecting crowd.

Review: KiNK's taster for his up and coming album on Running Back is here. We don't know if the title is inspired by the Scottish town that techno larrikins Clouds are from, or the sleepy mining town in Western Australia: it's anyone's guess! The Bulgarian hardware maverick brings us some funked up disco loops, reminiscent of DJ Sneak's Sneaky Trax imprint back in the day. "Perth" is a prime example of his unstoppable knack for good times. Taken from the new Playground LP, the three versions here are dripping with grease. Split between the original, a chord mix (which is brooding and epic) and a funky beat version full of sultry latin percussion: it's all you ever wanted from a single. Perfect house music for techno DJs and techno music for disco DJs.

Review: While Ben Worrall's debut album as Crackazat, 2015's slightly overlooked Crescendo, was quietly impressive, this sophomore set is simply superb. Naturally musically rich - Worrall is a brilliant producer, but has always been a very talented musician, too - the set sees him lay down ten tracks that gleefully join the dots between slick jazz-funk instrumentation, sensual and soulful vocals, brilliantly played solos and grooves that put the dancefloor first and foremost. While there are a few downtempo explorations dotted throughout (the dreamy synth chords and meandering synth-sax of "Midnight In Sector Six" standing out), it's naturally the quality and quantity of his U.S garage, soulful house and deep house cuts that impresses most.

Review: Time to get those fingers green once again as Leaf fires off the second part to his "Pick N Mix" series. Once again, it's an all-out assault of skanks, rasps and gnarly gurning dynamics that don't just make a crowd dance but electrify it. With its excellent vocal sample and potty bass "Jah" is the definition of 'fire' and DJs should call the local fire brigade before planning on dropping it, "Riddim" groans under the bass pressure before twisting you with an array of percussive elements, "Get Down" shows Leaf at his more stripped back, steppy and crispy, "Tosh" pays homage to the don with a block-snare bashment serenade while "Inner Connected" reminds us of Leaf's more soulful side. Job done... Just like any good pick n' mix, all flavours are covered - and every single one of them is sweet.

Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: Few neuro newcomers have dented the game with as much future promise in the last year or so as young UK tech-smelter Shyun. Having emerged on Neurofunkgrid, he's gone on to work with Mayan and now the daddy of all dark tech imprints: Critical. Naturally this contains his most show-stopping, perplexing, hair-raising sounds and ideas to date... The turbine reverse shreds and energy of "Digital Circus", the darkside halftime theatrics of "ZigZag", the soul-arresting emotion and depths of the Charli Brix-fronted "Circles" and the precision drum clarity and alien funk of his Cruk collaboration "Sentry". Every track comes with its own character, energy and benchmark: Shyun is not messing around here.

Review: Over the years the Midlands duo, Filthy Habits have built a strong and steady following, predominantly revered for their exciting DJ sets the lads promotions are seeing some love on the floor too and this EP shows why This is some shoe throwing shiz right here. 'Abandoned' is as high octane as they come, packed with jump up signatures it's fast and fun. What more do you want? 'The Calling' is another floor destroyer which slots into the noisy jump up box, with its disgustingly low sub and its dog capturing high hook. It also has so creepy critter like samples that we're more used to hearing in dark dubstep, which brings an interesting twist to the track.

Review: The Night Bass crew just keep on throwing out KO punches. Hot on the heels of the label boss AC Slater's debut album Outsiders and the killer V/A "Summer Phases" EP comes this rampant four-tracker from UK machine twister Taiki Nulight. It's some of his deadliest material, too; "Dead End" is drunken wobbler where the bass leads you down some very dark pathways, "Horn Porn" (a collabo with the ubiquitous Lorenzo) is a high frequency flexing soul-shaker with a series of system-slapping drums while "Everybody In The Club" (with Mikey B) adds a little off-beat ruffage with a seriously aggy hornets-nest bassline. "Trippin' Up" closes the show with one of Taiki's heaviest designs to date. Broken, groaning, gnarly and metallic, Taiki's taking no prisoners today mate.

Review: Nicola Cruz returns with another spellbinding fusion of Afro Brazilian charm in the form of "Folha De Jurema". With the dusky dulcets of Arteria FM, the dusty strums of Spaniol and sultry plucks of Salvador Arguaya, Cruz commands a decorated cast as they explore a mystical new vision of a traditional Brazilian folk standard. The remixes are just as warm and alluring as Xique Xique adds a little steel string tension, Crussen maps out a chugging Scandinavian odyssey and Rio's Carrot Green brings us back home to the motherland with a poignant, hazy flutter of house soul. Stunning.

Review: Story has it that Chicago disco legend Sadar Bahar discovered Ben (aka Cosmic Force of Clone/Creme Organization fame) Spaander's Utrecht based studio, and it's said to be housing around 60 synths. Electro fiend Spaander 'was charmed by the electronic elements in Sadar's funk and Sadar loved Ben's ideas.' They claim that nothing was sampled on these two tracks. There's undoubtedly an old school flavour to "We Are Righteous People" with its funky bass, sleazy guitar licks and bongo drums galore over spacy synths. Next up "Bouncing Atoms" gets the party started in fine form with dusty/live sounding drums, more frenetic guitar work and the mandatory cowbells going off all over the place!

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a collaborative debut album (on Sound Signature, no less) from London broken beat veterans Dego and Kaidi Tatham. As with their previous joint releases on 2000 Black, Rush Hour, Eglo and, of course, Sound Signature, it's the duo's love of rich, jazz-fuelled musicality, sun-kissed melodies and loose, languid rhythms that shines through. There are naturally nods towards disco, boogie, jazz-funk, Afrobeat, hip-hop and classic "bruk", with a stellar cast list of guest musicians and vocalists swinging by to lend a hand. If Herbie Hancock decamped to Ladbroke Grove and made an album with Bugz in the Attic, it would probably sound like this. In our book, that's a very good thing indeed.

What's your secret pal? On Dancefloor Edits Hot Barbecue, hear that inspirational Martin Luther King Jr speech over an uplifting lo-slung disco groove that is "Billy Groove" (Lego dub 5 AM). Review: One of New Zealand's most outstanding dubstep producers Akcept has the honour to follow up heavyweights DBridge and Nomine on Youngsta's very own Sentry Records. The Tempa-affiliated legend established his record label earlier this year and is dedicated to present nothing but the finest content spanning across from different genres and styles he truly loves. Nevertheless this next and third instalment, due to release on the 6th of October 2017, holds down two brilliant 140 bpm clashers once again. Both "Dreader Than Dread", a rather dub influenced single, as well as "Howl" which covers the lower end, are a legitimate and respectable nod to the soundsystem culture.

Review: Hot Digits enjoyed Kellini's last EP so much that they asked him to come back and this time he's brought fellow Norwegian Saskin S: who follows his The Game EP from last year. The two bring some serious heat with this bunch of energetic nu-disco cuts. Starting off with the neon-lit boogie of "Break A Leg" followed by the low slung groove of "In Doubt" which really takes things deep. It comes alongside remixes from rising Irish producer Stephen Richards, whose rendition of "In Doubt" gets some groovy summertime vibes happening (to get any decent Disco Stu in the mood) while Chewy Rubs' From The Deep dub of "Resaca" takes things down a darker and headier route: which would be perfect for late night mood lighting on the dancefloor.

Review: Story has it that a bunch of Amsterdam's current scene heroes had studios in the basement of a hotel opposite the former iconic Trouw nightclub (RIP). One morning, local enfant terrible San Proper happened to cross paths with Nachtbraker (early on a Tuesday morning) and that's how this collaboration of sorts came about. More specifically, San Proper "casually grabbed a microphone.. Nachtbraker pressed record, Dr. Proper got his inner Mick Jagger on, and behold: Misses, madame, mademoiselle was born". Hear the cowboy of minimal house croon over Nachtbraker's funky disco loops on "M.m.m" (feat San Proper's Elegy), while Hamburg's finest Session Victim remix the track next: giving it more dancefloor dynamic. Second original offering "Hamdi" is a hammering disco house joint that will really rock the house, while the remix up next by Bli takes it down a couple of notches, plus a slight Afro touch into something deeper to mood light the early evening.

Review: Propaganda is Oliver Huntemann's fifth studio album, and sees him expand his sound and range over the course of 12 tracks, without losing his signature style. "Taktik" and "Poltergeist" see the German producer flirt with slower tempos, but the bass is so menacing on the latter track that its intensity is unstoppable. The pace picks up on the insane filtered builds and rolling snares of "Egoist", while recent single "Rotlicht" is classic Huntemann, all spiralling foghorns, insistent percussion and the darkest sub-bass this side of late-90s tech-step. Propaganda does contain some real surprises - like the down tempo sound scapes of "Anonym" - and the eerie electro of "Momentum", but its unifying theme are bass lines that are uniquely malevolent and multi-layered.

Review: If you've been to a festival this summer, it's likely that you will have heard "Surrender", the first collaboration between Running Back man Gerd Janson and Black Jukebox curator Shan. A pleasing slab of feel-good disco-house with added carnival percussion, the track's appeal likes as much in the duo's ability to place life-affirming peaks (built around colossal disco samples) in all the right places as the rock solid nature of the production. Basically, it sounds like an anthem and is fast turning into one. There's a similarly old school feel to "Gentle Place", too. The track's analogue bassline and layered, carnival house style percussion is brilliantly off-set by the kind of swirling Balearic chords and eyes-closed vocal samples so familiar from Janson's Talamanca System work with Phillip Lauer and Mark Barrott.

Review: Perhaps of the most consistent and influential chapters of Bryan Gee and Jumping Jack Frost's D&B dynasty, Philly Blunt has been responsible for some of the most serious jungle benchmarks in its 22 year history. Here we find its repertoire in the trusted hands of Serum as he updates, edits and contextualises the label's history, present and future. From the many Roni-sized Firefox pieces such as the stark warbles of "True Grit" and Krusty-flavoured Glamour Gold jams such as "You Can Run" to more contemporary pieces like Serum & Voltage's mischievous jump-up funk "Save This World" and Bladerunner's immense update on Dillinja's "I Selassie I". To the point.

Review: Tampa Florida based Breakbeat Paradise are back with a new one by Mined & Forrest: who are none other than Mined from Obba Select and Forrest Funk. Inspired by classic funk, modern bass design and hip-hop sampling, they teamed up to bring their musical ideas together. Party starting/block rockin' beats with some very familiar vocals to get you singing along to on "There It Is" (original mix) while "Funk Toxic" takes you back to the '80s on this funky joint full of slap bass, a totally electric brass section and a drummer getting mighty wicked. Elsewhere, it's a family affair on the nu-skool shenanigans of "Drugs" featuring Joker, until the EP closes with a bang courtesy of the one and only Jayl Funk remix of "There It Is" which really works that vocal of a certain missy over a street level funk explosion.

Review: A year has passed since Voltage took us for a "Ruby" on Logan D's Low Down Deep. During that time he's verified himself as a roller king and teamed up with Serum to get souped up and waggle his fat cobra in our faces. Now he's back with more high grade strains and they're all as smelly and potent as the next. "Sticky Vicky" is all about the staccato sandpaper harmonics, "Barbera" does this cool Q&A between higher and lower textures before dropping into a dreamy rave breakdown, "Labrynth" is all about the squelching farty off-beat bass funk while "Boy" shuts us down with weirded-out scary reverse bassline twistery. White widow... guaranteed to spark up the dance!

Review: Three generations of drum & bass craftsmen combine to form a mean Voltron; OGs Total Science, DNAudio alumni Hyrdo and relative newcomer War fuse to fire up four authentic wallshakers. Highlights and mesmerising moments fly from every corner; the layered rolls of percussion and fluidity of "Denial", the rasping electrified bass gurgles of "Straight G", the wily drumfunk and jazzy twangs of "Deluge" and the vibe-flipping euphoric electronica waves on the breezy soul roller "Aegean Blues".

Review: What a crazy trip it's been for AC Slater. Having bubbled away in all kinds of genres from hardcore to electro in the 2000s, having set up Night Bass just two years ago, he's created a distinctive and hugely successful sound that's so distinctive it's often described as the Night Bass sound. With his debut album Outsiders he galvanises and develops the sound even more as he ranges from the classic bass burping UK influenced jackers we know and love him for ("Ring The Alarm", All About The Paper", "Dope Slinger") to a much more soulful, sensual palette and flexes his deeper side ("Take Off", "Come Back") With splashes of UK garage ("Another You") and total alien grit ("Jaws"), this is the Night Bass bossman really digging into his own sound, his own crew and his movement.

Review: Since emerging on L Double's Flex a few years back, Margaman has blessed us with a whole string of timeless cuts through the likes of Kenny Ken's Mix & Blen, Dawn Raid's Hocus Pocus and Ash-A-Tack's Director's Cut. Now he makes his debut on Ray Keith's seminal Dread imprint with two incendiary EPs. It kicks off here with the massive 2am blow-out "Searching", a track that grabs you instantly with its over-layered vocals and energetic thrust. Other highlights include the stripped back tribality and jazzy echoes of "Tribe Of Benjamin", the slurry bass and Headzy mentasms of "Satisfy" the space-race metallic tech-step pace of "Nasty Bloodclart" and the neck-breaking jungle grunts of "You Still Here". Dig deep as there's a whole other EP as part of this release too. Margman isn't messing around!

Review: File Under Disco: releasing 100% original disco since 2012. Their latest release is by Oh Yeah, who produced the massive "Nothing But The Beat" last year which included a mighty Hot Toddy remix. Now they deliver yet another dancefloor weapon of a track: it's reminiscent of classic Michael Jackson or '80's Motown. Remixes are by Perth's finest Dr Packer: two in fact. The first injects much more funk and dancefloor dynamics into the track, while the dub mix does exactly what it says on the tin. New Zealand's Frank Booker is in top form as always, getting that soulful '70s vibe on and finally Razor 'N Tape's Dicky Trisco & JKriv go for a New York City circa '83 kinda joint: which will take you back to the days of Studio 54.

Review: Foor are sick. There's three words. Foor know soul. There's another three words. In fact there are so many possible three word combinations you could create about Foor that scientists reckon you would be here until 2039 if you wrote them. We haven't got that type of time though so we'll just say these three words: this record bangs. The original is a sweet and sassy UKG flavour while the remixes cover all bass bases from alien bass technoid 4/4 shizzle (Endor), skipped space two-step magic (Mind Of A Dragon) and skin-melting breakbeats ("Shapes")

Review: By their usual standards, prolific Tel Aviv twosome Red Axes has enjoyed a relatively quiet year. In fact, this four-track EP on Life & Death contains their first original material of 2017. As usual, it's an eccentric collection of tracks. Compare, for example, the cowbell-rich, wonky house hustle of chiming opener "Calacol", which manages to be both funky and weird, and "Vego Gam", where surf guitars and alien synth lines surf an eccentric, post-punk house groove. The dancefloor eclecticism continues with the Italo-disco/dub disco fusion of "Round" makes way for the undulating tropical drums, pots-and-pans melodies and glassy-eyed vocal snippets of "Sami".

Review: It's a remix affair on Strictly Flava this week, and the label has done very well in picking up exactly the right sort of talented needed to shake things up a bit. In case you didn't know, these playaz play the game very well - the nu-school garage game, that is! As such, Bad Habit comes through with some fine-ass dusty house beats on his opening two remixes of Scott Diaz and Kay Barnett, and the same thing goes for Doctor Nick, Solution, Prescribe Da Vibe, and every other garage wizard on this tasty little comp. Well, thank God there's some badboys out there carrying forth the garage gospel. Word.

Review: Two and a half years deep into their dark star safari Sub-Liminal continue to shred up the dance with a crack team of heavy bass innovators. Bass riffs galore and aesthetics so unforgiving, every track is tailored for the most underground floor... The worming low-end mashery of Too Greezey's "Modulation", Leaf's oddball drum funk and melting trumpets on "Shoot Off", Warhead's brutal technoid mutations on "A'Gwarn" and Tyrant's absolutely annihilating "Nuclear Bomb" are just four of the 14 high level bangers on display here. There's nothing subliminal about the message on this one: not picking up on this is a criminal offence.

Review: You're born, you live, you soundtrack your life with gully understated bangers, you die. It's a lifecycle we can identify with and here comes Westy to soundtrack it. Hitting with more of a technoid, electrified twist than he's shown before, the title track bites with 1.21 gigawatts and leads to a slew of darkside, jungle-touched bust-ups; the old Virus style "Humanoidz", the soaring vocals and Bingo-bounced "This Way Up", the purring (not to mention divine) mid 90s-style stepper "Do This" and the pure jolt of euphoria from the grand piano-tickling finale "No Way Out". All flavours, all bases, all crews covered... Long may our cycles continue.
