Review: There are two things you need to know about Riya... One: She's one of drum & bass's longest-standing and authentic singer/writers. Two: she works with dopest of producers. "Hurt Heals" is the best example of her range and her collaborator flexibility since her Sublimation album a few years back as the likes of Villem & Mcleod, Nyfmo & ZeroZero, Alibi, Phaction, Random Movement and Maverick Soul all get involved and create perfect beats for her dreamy, introspective soul. Highlights include the warm jazz feels of "Left Behind", Phaction's groaning bass on "Never Wrong", DRS's bars on "Ships" and the big feels slo-mo flip of "Numbers". Here's another thing you need to know about Riya... She's awesome.

Review: Direct to the dance: Swerve returns to Audio Addict with his fattest package to date. "Bad Inna England" flexes away on the old detuned synth chords before dropping into a simple but effective bassline Q&A, "Massive & Crew" is all about the off-beat funk, militant rawness and cheeky old school references while "Rollerball" shows off a slippery side to the up-and-coming artist with light soulful touches and a deft purr on the bassline while "Turn Up shows off his sternest side with some chest-pressing drone bass notes. Finally we have "Badboy Sound" taps into a classic G-Dub roughness with added militant drum attitude. Massiveness in all directions. All crews must big up.

Review: Discomatin co-founder and all-round Parisian selector don Saint James co-launches his new Chuwanaga label with this expertly curated compilation. In The Red is a deep dive into the exciting funk fusion coming out of London between 1980-83 as a new movement of black British musicians honed a sound that owes as much to soundsystem culture as it does disco. From the glistening instrumental flare of Index to the lavish synths and slap bass of Equa, this captures a unique and currently under-documented moment in groove history. Complete with detailed liner notes, this is a fantastic way to launch a new label. Not to be slept on.

Review: Along with Sheffield combo Hiem, Rayko is fast becoming Nang Records' most reliable artist. It would be fair to say that his latest album, No Stopping - his fourth in total and first since 2014 - is undoubtedly his strongest yet. Blessed with some fine guest vocals from Tania Haroshka and, perhaps more impressively, Crazy P's Danielle Moore, the set features much more "live instrumentation" - most notably bass and electric guitars - than the Spaniard's previous full-lengths. This adds an extra level of musical richness to the Madrid man's synthesizer-heavy tracks, which once again flit between hard-edged nu-disco, sun-kissed Balearica, revivalist electrofunk sweetness and the kind of cosmic disco that we would once have expected to hear from Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi.

Review: Shaun Baron-Carvais aka Shlomo returns to Arts after last year's Rapture. The Paris-based producer has carved out a name with his loopy but always funky take on techno and Hardwave is no exception. The title track is a dense, percussive roller, with some freaky vocals buried deep in the mix. "Styx" has a similar aesthetic, but the approach is somewhat different; revolving around a slightly looser arrangement, it sees Shlomo use a series of drops and builds, along with some cleverly positioned filtering, to create a track that ranks up there with O/V/R's finest material. On "Parhelion", the sound is just as intense, with Shlomo dropping wild tonal signals over a ferocious percussive rhythm. It's peak time techno at its finest.

Review: Influential and prolific, Dave Lee has been one of house music's major proponents of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal tracks. Without question, he was instrumental in its development. Produced With Love is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released and the first for more than 20 years. It proves that dance music with character still exists and rather than rely on sampling older records, the overwhelming majority of music is newly recorded. Rest assured that there's quite the supporting cast here, on the vocal front: the late great Diane Charlemagne on "Overnight Sensation", Canadian songstress and frequent Nick Holder collaborator Sacha Williamson on "I Recognize" and the legendary Linda Clifford on "Won't Let Go". Fellow London disco dons Horsemeat Disco collaborate on "Dancing Into The Stars" too. The second half of the collection focuses on Lee's impeccable remixes and yes: there is a version of "Must Be The Music" and a track by the inimitable Peven Everett entitled "Love Is Thicker Than Water" alongside several other gems.

Review: This debut single from previously unseen outfit LSD is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the trio is made up of legendary UK techno producers Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Dave Summer AKA Function. Given their collective history of making thumping, mind-altering techno, you'd expect Progress to be both heavy and trippy. That's certainly what you get from opener "Process 1", where psychedelic electronics and cascading, otherworldly noises rise above an armour-plated techno groove. They push the envelope even further on "Process 2", a track blessed with restless cymbal lines and weird, off-key electronics. In comparison, the similarly intense "Process 3" seems deep and woozy, though the incessant, 1990 style bleeps and "LFO" style synths guarantees a suitably hallucinogenic feel throughout.

Review: Much like squashing a fly with a sledgehammer, Sheffield's Project Allout, counter Bristol's bass supremacy with this mammoth compilation. Yes, the second instalment in their eponymous series boasts a frankly absurd 39 new fresh bass cuts. It may take a while to get through it all, but that's half the fun. Inititial highlights include the speedy claps, fizzy hats and taut wobble vibes of "Manners" by 1Thirty, the horror move trap thrills of "Black Missile" by "Familiar Face" and the voluptuous house bass of Mooney's "At The Top".

Review: All Low Down Deep releases are important but this one is especially significant as Logan D unleashes the first of what is likely to be a mountain of unreleased beats by the sorely missed Dominator who sadly passed away on June 8 this year. Both remixes here have Dom and Logan's stamp slashed throughout; Pleasure's 2014 track from The Firm album sees a ramp up in bite and a much more demonic wolf-like bark while "Flight 33" gets a complete tear-down and rebuild with much more brutal, low-swung bassline. The results speak for themselves. RIP Dom.

Review: Another Bomb Strikes from the Prosper & Stabfinger duo, a phrase that works both on a theoretical level as well as a practical one. In short, thispair of breakbeat mashers are back with their inimitable style of groovy electro reworks. "Dopeness", the title tune, features Imagine This & Jui on the vocals, and it really is a perfect example of the best possible sort of modern boogie - phat bass lines over soulful vocals and kick ass disco beats. "Pay For Bass" is more of the same excellence, all thick beats and party-ready bumps, while "You're Wonderful" sounds like a trip back to the late 80s, a sound wrapped in an unmistakable early hip-hop flair, rewired and anted-up for maximum dancefloor effect and seamless DJ use. SLICK.

Bonafide soul badness, everything about this record is bliss as both the iconic vocalists harmonise with total messages of unity. "We Are The People" is almost gospel in its intentions while "Midnite Classic" takes us a little deeper into the night with more of Break's classic roughhouse funk foundation. Fresh from soundtracking many of Sun & Bass's parties this year, this is now yours forever. Give it to the people!

Their very own various artists series is always comprised of four dancefloor oriented tracks, that have all been heavily road tested and certified by label boss Solomun on his countless gigs throughout the globe. Beginning with the brooding dancefloor drama of Par-T-One's "I'm So Crazy" (Armonica remix) with its entrancing and tunnelling aesthetic that reaches near tribal moments, plus that Dennis Parker sample never gets old! Spanish producer German Brigante serves up the slinky tech house groove of "Mango", Greek duo Alexandros Djkevingr and Greg Ignatovich (Vagabond) serve up the nefarious afterhours techno of "Choose Life" and Turkey's Serhan Guney serves up the slow burning progressive house thriller "Journey Of The Mind".

Review: Less than two years have passed since Keeno's Futurist and here he comes with another immaculate LP for Med School. As always, his classical theory and thirst for rich instrumentation are dominant themes as we glide and swoon through some of his most direct, emotional but dancefloor-ready compositions to date. Highlights include the triumphant album opener "All The Shimmering Things", the darker, space-bound chorally-flecked "Hidden Peaks", the outstanding dark jam "Jungle Ballet" and the pure theatre of "Guesswork" among many other perfectly executed cuts. Outstanding class from one of Med School's finest.

Review: Before nu-disco, there was Metro Area. We can't over-emphasize the influence that Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani's collaborative project had when it first appeared at the tail end of the 1990s. They were amongst the first to breathe new life into disco, largely by drawing on elements borrowed from extended boogie B-side dubs, analogue deep house and NYC's mid-'80s proto-house movement. Their eponymous debut album, first released in 2002, remains once of dance music's finest full-lengths, as this brilliant 15th anniversary reissue proves. The duo spent a significant amount of time re-mastering each of the 12 tracks from their original parts and stems, so all-time classics such as "Muira", "Pina", "Orange Alert" and "Caught Up" sound better than ever. In other words, you need this in your life.

Review: Nicola Cruz returns with another spellbinding fusion of Afro Brazilian charm in the form of "Folha De Jurema". With the dusky dulcets of Arteria FM, the dusty strums of Spaniol and sultry plucks of Salvador Arguaya, Cruz commands a decorated cast as they explore a mystical new vision of a traditional Brazilian folk standard. The remixes are just as warm and alluring as Xique Xique adds a little steel string tension, Crussen maps out a chugging Scandinavian odyssey and Rio's Carrot Green brings us back home to the motherland with a poignant, hazy flutter of house soul. Stunning.

Review: As we've learned in the past the Funk Hunk likes muscle, lots of disco muscle. His edits are never weak. So it's business as usual on Funkier Than That, his latest selection of edits. There are four cuts here to get up and down to. "Funkier Than That" is a snappy, Minneapolis-style majestic funker, "Pushin' On" is perky synth-pop and "Making Love" is fast, sweaty and a thrill a minute. Lastly "YYT Shake (Funk Hunk remix)" is a cool slice of vintage B-Boy hip-hop.

Review: For his eleventh(!) studio album, techno veteran Johannes Heil does what he knows best and focuses on the dance floor. Gospel starts the soundscapes of "Gospel One" before giving way to the epic synths and heavy kicks of "Gospel Two", which come across like Slam and early Ron Trent on steroids. "Gospel Three" sees the German producer delve into deeper, dub techno, while on the fourth instalment, he drops a bleep-heavy break beat track. Heil has always been a versatile producer, but no matter what direction he veers into, each track on Gospel has a crisp, precise sound. From the chord-heavy builds of "Gospel Six" to the rolling tribal groove of "Gospel Nine", this approach prevails on Heil's latest album.

Review: By their usual standards, prolific Tel Aviv twosome Red Axes has enjoyed a relatively quiet year. In fact, this four-track EP on Life & Death contains their first original material of 2017. As usual, it's an eccentric collection of tracks. Compare, for example, the cowbell-rich, wonky house hustle of chiming opener "Calacol", which manages to be both funky and weird, and "Vego Gam", where surf guitars and alien synth lines surf an eccentric, post-punk house groove. The dancefloor eclecticism continues with the Italo-disco/dub disco fusion of "Round" makes way for the undulating tropical drums, pots-and-pans melodies and glassy-eyed vocal snippets of "Sami".

Review: Dave Whelan and Mike Di Scala aka Camelphat have made their name with releases on Relief and Coyu's Suara, and now take their funky house sound to Lee Foss' recently launched imprint. The title track is a relentless, stab-heavy groove, full of repetitive vocal samples and infectious organ riffs. On "O.M.G.", the pair opt for a tougher sound, with firing percussion and a sleazy, murky bass underpinning a female vocal intoning the track's title that is then filtered repeatedly throughout the arrangement. "Magic Stick" sees Camelphat opt for a more stripped back approach, this time with tonal bleeps and a warm bass providing a backing for a highly suggestive vocal narrative.

Review: Last time we heard from label-hopping producer Books, he was delivering a deliciously dubbed-out, Afro-funk-meets-Afro-disco remix of Dele Sosimi for Wah Wah 45s. This time round, he's on an edits tip, delivering club-ready revisions that stretch the meaning of the term. Certainly, given that it contains some brilliantly dense new percussion and the loopy bounce of house, we'd argue that "In The Groove" - a killer revision of a disco track previously bitten by 6th Borough Project some years ago - is more of a remix than a re-edit. Regardless, it's something of a peak-time belter. "Passage of Time", meanwhile, is a wonderfully woozy deep house number full of sampled jazz trumpet, enveloping pads and swirling hip-hop vocal samples.

Review: A year has passed since Voltage took us for a "Ruby" on Logan D's Low Down Deep. During that time he's verified himself as a roller king and teamed up with Serum to get souped up and waggle his fat cobra in our faces. Now he's back with more high grade strains and they're all as smelly and potent as the next. "Sticky Vicky" is all about the staccato sandpaper harmonics, "Barbera" does this cool Q&A between higher and lower textures before dropping into a dreamy rave breakdown, "Labrynth" is all about the squelching farty off-beat bass funk while "Boy" shuts us down with weirded-out scary reverse bassline twistery. White widow... guaranteed to spark up the dance!

Review: Given that this is Ben Worrall's fourth Crackazat 12" for Local Talk in less than three years, it would be fair to say the project now has a regular home. As with many of his recent tracks, "Proton Blue" looks to classic US garage for inspiration, peppering a bouncy groove with rich organ stabs and jazzy synthesizer melodies. It's accompanied by the alternative "Deep Orbit" version, a more hypnotic and slightly more spacey interpretation that gives greater prominence to the producer's jazzy synthesizer riffs. "Called My Name", meanwhile, is a soulful, jazzy and fluid affair blessed with a hazy vocal and some luscious jazz guitar. The cut's loose and languid jazz-funk influences are explored further on the arguably superior "Meet the Band" remix.

Review: These are the breaks! Super-longstanding D&B bastion Drum&BassArena unleash their first EP in over 10 years with a special dedication to the driving drum fusion that's powered all our favourite jungle jams: The breakbeat. It's an all-star cast too... Bladerunner does his thing with a classic subby wobble and skippy breaks, Shimon gets his bouncy skank on with Darrison on "Believe It" while June Miller, James Marvel & MC Mota flip the breaks into a steppier, more fractured dancehall/jungle/madness switch up on "Don Dada". Those in need of a hardcore injection of rave purity should seek and support John B's ruthless "ENERGY" and A.M.C & Turno's glacier-blasting tech-jump melter "Ice Cold". Dedication's what you need.

Review: For those who follow the work of British IDM legend Claro Intelecto, the last few years have been frustrating, to say the least. It's been five years since his last album, and three since he released a single. Exhilarator, his fifth full-length, is certainly well over-due. Predictably, the triple vinyl set - pressed in limited quantities on "splatter vinyl" - is also rather good. As usual, it offers a superb balance of dark and intoxicating electro, tuneful intelligent techno, bubbly IDM, glitchy post-ambient soundscapes, deep and bass-heavy techno shufflers and clanking, off kilter experimentation from the Autehcre school of electronica. It's atmospheric, impeccably produced and stuffed full of highlights. In other words, it's another great Claro Intelecto album.

Review: Nthng has just released his debut album on Lobster Theremin, but that hasn't affected his productivity as he debuts on Delsin. Like his long player, Gaia shows that he is adept at covering a range of styles. "Oralage" is a lean, linear affair, led by ticking, steely percussion and tough drums. It's atypical for the Dutch label, but soon afterwards, the Amsterdam producer moves into more familiar dreamy ambience on the expansive "A Souls Search". The most impressive track is "Gaia" itself: revolving around a chugging groove, dense, metallic drums and cavernous sound effects, it feels like Nthng has effortlessly reinvented the Basic Channel dub techno blueprint.

Review: UK don Luke Slater returns with the fourth instalment of Deep Heet. The last edition released in 2012 on his esteemed Mote Evolver imprint is recognised by those that know as some of the most reliable techno tools in recent years: who can forget the sinister hypnotism of "Flat Tire": what a classic! You can bet there's yet more austere and ergonomic tracks for serious DJ use on offer here. Starting off with the driving and cyclical grunt of "Desert Races", then the tunnelling and trance inducing bell melody of "Life Rhythm". Then the full throttle intergalactic charge of Random Kingdom and the dystopian minimalism of "Lazer Organical" which would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice! Slater is still without doubt one of the most singular talents in techno, respect!

Now consider the sounds; the rising havoc and brock-out behaviour of "Hit The Ground Running", the jazzy, Creative Source style swing and cheeky rising riff of "Starving For Gold" the swashbuckling drums and housey chords of "Twice The Power", the soft jazzy tones, dreamy keys and subtle-but-weird-as-hell bass licks of "Well That's Fun", the smile on your face when you rewind every single one of them. Precision business.
