Review: Time for a freshness flex: Shogun return to their new and rising talent series Point Of Origin and once again it's a big deal with 15 crucial cuts from 20 outstanding and future-shaping artists; from the already established and massively respected such as Serum, Paul T & Edward Oberon, who follow up last year's massive "Take My Breath Away" with the deep space slinker "Burning", and Paul SG with his decidedly wobbled-out drumstick snapping roller "Holy Moly" right the way through to exciting new energies in the dance like Phaction, with his ghostly-vocalled soul-out "Distant Lovers" and Neve & Crimson's beautifully blue-notated jazz drum dark-out "Solar Rain" and so many stunning cuts in between (Mitekiss, Gerra & Stone, Was A Be, Macca & Loz Contreras, the list goes on) this is Shogun at its most exciting and forward-thinking.

Review: Flexing the likes of G13, Multi Function, Cre8 and Dub Damage between them all, rising riff-wizards Filthy Habits and Jeopardize collide for the first time on Heist's Calypso with six outstanding jams that cross the board into all corners; "Widowmaker" is all about the dagger-like riffs, "Chillum Riddim" hits with a jungle edge due to its heaving ragga call to action, "Infiltrators" rolls with an electrified buzz, "Black Widow" wobbles and scorches in equal measure while the dense, groaning basses on "Respawn" drag us all back down into the swamp where we all belong. Finally we have "Nothing To Lose" where a plucked one note bassline hammers a stern message beneath some star-lit euphoric synth textures. Time to say goodbye to the wife!

Review: Rising UK producer Tesen gets busy with his biggest EP to date on the future-focused Young Guns Recordings. Seven originals deep; there's a lot to take in as the Bristol DJ showcases his broadest palette; the Macky Gee-style riff addictiveness on "Focus", the trippy off-beat funk and twisted designs on "Groupies", the insane range of bass textures on "Screw Loose", the haunting harmonics of "Sleep Paralysis", the Bristolian Q&A cheekiness on "Get Outta My Face", the gutter chomping highs and lows of "Attention" and the synth-rippling feels on "Glaciate"... Each tune aimed directly at the dance, the Tesen takeover starts here.

Review: The don Randall continues to smash things to "Pieces".... 16 tracks of serious rolled-out dark groove soul, it's nothing but heads down grit and uncompromised creativity with every track playing the consummate role of lead player; T>I's soul-shaking hip-twister "All I Do", Benny L's epic groaning yes-fest "Dr No", Vapour's sci-fi drama stepper "Looking Back", Trex's cosmic alien lullaby "Short Story" are just some of the highlights as we roll deep to the very end as Seba blesses the collection with a superlative re-touch on Randall, Goldie and Dego's seminal, scene-shaping bomb from 93 "The R". Randall... Still doin' it after all these years. Essential for all drum & bass heads.

Review: It's been a killer year for DJ Hybrid's Deep In The Jungle imprint; kicking off with the Anthems album in January, he's proceeded to drop a cannon of rollers and brock-outs throughout '17... But this has to be the biggest yet: 20 brand new remixes from across the vaults by some of the label's closest allies, every track guarantees deep mix pleasure and heavy dancefloor appreciation. Highlights include DJ Cautious's outstanding rework of the Kartoon's "Soundboy Surrender", Galvatron's rifle-kick drum jitters on Bassflex's "One Amen A Day", Pull Up Collective's rough scuzzy bass on Sharpz "Junglist" and the absolutely brutal twist of Sound Shifter's take on Crisis & Ikon B's "Who Runz Tingz". Trust... Deep In The Jungle run tingz round these parts!

Review: Man of the moment Benny L has had an incredible rise over the last two years, guided and nurtured by Ram Trilogist and Audioporn founder Shimon, Benny's groaning, rumbling basslines have become a benchmark that sit right up there with Serum and Voltage as the best in the contemporary game. Case in point: "Low Blow", a tune that's been unavoidable at festivals throughout the summer and famously made Goldie pull the best bass faces the Mixmag live stream has ever seen. It's backed by three other crucial rollers: the iced-out Headz homage "Route Zero", the thunder-striking drum-shattering "Hold It Down" and the whirlwind sense-zapper "Home." Four absolutely crucial cuts from one of this year's most essential rising drum & bass stars.

Review: Mike Misiu is no newcomer to the edits game, having previously contributed to releases on Secret Squirrel and Bastedos. Here he joins another renowned rework outfit, Brooklyn disco swingers Razor 'N' Tape, bringing with him a tight collection of floor-friendly revisions. He opens with the rising and falling disco orchestration, crunchy Clavinet lines and subtle acid tweaks of 107 BPM winner "Loose Change", before wrapping more TB-303 lines and heavy analogue bass around delay-laden boogie vocals and proto-house beats on the brilliant "All A Dream". Elsewhere, "Roll The Dice" is a gently dubbed chunk of masculine peak-time disco-funk, while "Black Magic" is an undulating, filter disco treat.

Review: Fresh from waggling his snake around the gaff, DJ Limited returns with two more phenomenal slabs of riffy gritty bass funk. "Smoke 'Em Out" is a fat 20 skinner with rolling Hazard-style drums and a bassline so bulbous and vital you'd swear it was on its third trimester and about to give birth to septuplets. "Ain't No Love", meanwhile, flexes a classic sample around a savage distorted bass drop before opening up the strings and vocals over the beats. Big up the double negative crew - there's plenty of love around here for DJ Limited!

Review: 13... Unlucky for some but not for yung Ed:It as it's exactly the amount of months since his last Shogun four-track breath-taker. As with everything he's dropped on Friction's label, the EP is an exciting full-vibe spectrum that explores myriad dark corners of the dance. "Junction" is all about the emotional power with its evocative vocal and touching chord progressions, "Nevermind It" flips the vibe with contrast as we're treated to a naked subby two-stepper before "Wander Away" takes us on an all-out soul juggernaut that tips its hat towards the Breakbeat Era style of vocal jazz-tinged drum & bass. Finally we have the grumbling bass stepper that Ed:It teased us with earlier this month: "Kovacs". All bases covered, there's a strong argument to start calling Ed:It Edward Winnerhands here. A very strong argument.

Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: In the many a hipster in the UK may turn their noses up at dark and dirty jump up, "It's too loud, too simple and just too much". But in Europe and across the pond jump up is embraced and nurtured as part of the wider scene, and therefor can accommodate influence from across the entire dnb sphere, and vice versa. We think this the reason Simskai's, gutter scraping-ly good EP sounds so distinguished. 'Instruments' is an assault rifle track, with modulated shots being flung all over the top of a warm, undercover sub. 'Monster' is a fast paced stepper brimming with herculean energy and twisted techy nods. High pitched whistles and a tongue in cheek vox sample bring all the grubby hallmarks of jump up to 'Weird' but there are levels of echoes and atmospherics that bring a dystopian nuero feel. 'Energy' has a real mix of the darker sub-genre's, a barrage of sci-fi samples, a low pulsating sub and high distorted bursts of synth, it's a biggie. 'Lights Out' finishes the EP were we started, in a grotty, devil summoning soundscape, crisp breaks standout here against a collection of horror film worthy elements.

Review: Magic happens when Calibre and DRS collide. Both masters of space, imagery and story telling; they complement each other so well. Especially here... The piano-massaging "Sunrise" is the light from the dark as the pair make sense of the night before and capture the essence of a brand new day. Meanwhile on "Broken Wings" we're taken right back to Swerve with a subtle velvet disco hook that rises softly while DRS puts down one of the most important messages since "Angels Fall": we need to work together for this to work. Calls for unity don't come with much more authenticity.

Review: If Serum's new label Souped Up was an actual soup what flavour would it be? A minestrone perhaps? Full of chewy textures and a wholesomeness that instantly hits the heart. How about a mulligatawny, all hot and rich? Or maybe a classic oxtail? Intense and beefy. Whatever flavour you can compare it to, like all soups, it does what it says on the tin and it's best served piping hot. Here are two more cases in point Serum and fellow roller king Voltage; the rocket-launching Charge-like chiselled riff on "Mission Control" and the slinky jungle stepper which nods at Full Cycle sound with its mild wafts of jazziness, loose drums and continuous bass mutations. Chewy, wholesome, hot, rich, intense and beefy: Souped Up is every drum & bass flavour right now... Get it inside you!

Review: Blackbelt busting Danee B sparks up on G13 again and y'all better be wearing protective gear; he's on a bruise cruise from the off. KO punches come in the form of "Live In Concert" where a laser-like riff is neatly sideswiped by a cool dubbed-out breakdown, the seriously weirded out reverse bass texture on "Clash", the Nicole-powered riot jam "New Life" and the manic, almost psy-like twisted arpeggios and absolutely filthy tearing bassline. 10 thumbs up.

Review: Portuguese powermoves: Bassbrothers return with a fat packet of bangers and twangers to keep us warm during the gloomy months. Delivered over a year after their walloping "WTF" project, the seven-track stack brings everyone up to speed. Highlights include the tongue-in-cheek sampleplay and groove ricochets of "Cowbell", the undulating tech grizzles and electric current bassline of the title track, the gnarled-out halftime toxic funker "Accents" with man-of-the-moment Shield and the jumpy dynamics and sudden eastern switches of "Badboy". Review: All Low Down Deep releases are important but this one is especially significant as Logan D unleashes the first of what is likely to be a mountain of unreleased beats by the sorely missed Dominator who sadly passed away on June 8 this year. Both remixes here have Dom and Logan's stamp slashed throughout; Pleasure's 2014 track from The Firm album sees a ramp up in bite and a much more demonic wolf-like bark while "Flight 33" gets a complete tear-down and rebuild with much more brutal, low-swung bassline. The results speak for themselves. RIP Dom.

Review: Following "Action" and "Before The Storm", System returns with an EP so fat it's borderline album material. Loaded with his signature angular, hooky riffs and devilish energy, bangers hang from every inch of the release rafters. Highlights include "Listen" which fuses church-like synth blasts with an infectious Clipz-like rolling high end bass riff, the broken glass hook on "Program Failure", the twisted Q&A of "Extra Decibel". Lyptikal's remix of "Listen" commands serious attention with its Taxman-style bassline, too. Do as the men say... Listen!

Review: MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss on one record? Now Break is just showing off! Bonafide soul badness, everything about this record is bliss as both the iconic vocalists harmonise with total messages of unity. "We Are The People" is almost gospel in its intentions while "Midnite Classic" takes us a little deeper into the night with more of Break's classic roughhouse funk foundation. Fresh from soundtracking many of Sun & Bass's parties this year, this is now yours forever. Give it to the people!

Review: Groaner alerts! Jammin makes his debut on Switch! with two absurdly stinking pieces of bass naughtiness. "Ultimate Weapon" is a skin-melting wobbler that moans and grizzles under serious bass pressure and switches up into a variety of bass textures. "Savage Moments" (with fellow rising artist Tringy) swipes you from the left side as a neat percussive roll and cool spoken word drop into a cesspool of stanked out bass. Ultimately savage.

Review: One of the elite breed of artists who can appear across the board from Shogun to Low Down Deep, verified roller king Voltage returns to his own imprint for two slices of dagger dance bassline fun. With its sandpaper bassline and fiery energy "Hot Knives" hits the throat and gives you a buzz from the toes up while "Resistance" is much more of a gutter-chomping mix treat with its low swinging gnarly bassline hitting well below the knees over a spacious Bristol style jazzy break. Cut to the chase.

Review: German imprint Quintessentials' mission statement is to keep underground house music on the map. It claims to hold a candle to those old house records: they love that raw yet soulful vibe. For their 56th (!) release they have tapped Mexican producer 4004, who has had releases also of late on FACES, Poetry In Motion and Late Night Jackin'. Smoky late night groove "No Dreams" gets things off to a good start with its smooth Rhodes, bumpy bassline and hypnotic bongo action. We particularly enjoyed the pumping NYC basement vibe of "Fanta Club" while "Black Alley Shuffle" gets back to the program in sexy and dusky fashion complete with some dusty rhythms, diva vocals and further mood lighting with the impressive use of filter sweeps.

Review: While more often associated with punk-funk and dirty Italo style dancefloor workouts, Gomma's vast back catalogue contains a string of disco and boogie-inspired gems. To highlight the fact, the label has decided to release a series of EPs featuring some of its finest "Disco Jams". This first installment begins with a fine WhoMadeWho interpretation of Munk and LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy's Sly Stone style growler, "Kick Out The Chairs", before charging into dub disco-meets-proto-house territory via In Flagranti's "In The Silver White Box". There's another chance to admire Dimitri From Paris and DJ Rocca's Prelude Records tribute, "Eros Disco Theme", while original NYC disco don Nicky Siano channels the spirit of Loose Joints on his fantastic rework of KDMS's "Never Stop Believing".

Review: SBM is a new collaboration between Philpot co-founder Micahel Baumann (AKA Soulphiction) and the mysterious Blunted Monkz (an artist who has made just a handful of appearances on EPs and compilations since debuting in 2011). Happily, the quality threshold remains high throughout. Opener "Gotta Have It" sets the tone, serving up a rolling deep house cut built around low-slung dub disco bass, echoing vocal samples and layered percussion. "Tripolis Jam" is an even sweatier and more intensely percussive affair, with restless cowbells and heavier drum hits working in unison with a fuzzy, punk-funk bassline. Finally, they unveil the EP's undisputed banger, "Criticize", a woozy but energy-packed, jazzy deep house jam featuring vocal snippets from the Alexander O'Neal classic of the same name.

Review: Having spent the last few years giddily hopping between labels, COEO has decided to settle down. Flesh World is the Munich-based twosome's second release of 2017 for Toy Tonics, an imprint they first graced back in 2014. As usual, they're in a positive frame of mind, serving up a trio of tracks rich with both the feel good pulse of disco and boogie, and the metronomic heaviness of house. Both "Flesh World" and "In Motion" explore similar sonic territory, with the duo working a range of ear-pleasing samples from killer old disco and boogie cuts. Best of all, though, is the Kapote Drum Jam version of "Flesh World", which adds a little percussive pressure to an already celebratory workout.

Review: Another fire release from one of our favourite labels at present, Soul Deep Exclusives have a penchant for quality which they just won't waiver. 'Sunset' lures you in to a false sense of security with a soft old fashioned sing song before dropping into intensely crazy, cascading amens, and a thick air of nostalgia. The track reminds us of Peshay's Jamin' VIP. 'Rapid Eye Movement' moves us more into the realms of soft rolling liquid with delicate horns, but little twists of tech. Apart from the weird and excessively long title, "I'm Known As Danni Around These Parts" has everything we love about dnb in one nice neat package, crisp, rolling amens, a warm unassuming sub and gloriously emotive vocals. Bliss. "Not Far Now' is a beautifully calm roller, with gorgeous, glassy echoing twangs, and heartfelt strings.

Review: Freestylers and Deekline on a jungle trip? You already know this is going to tan your hide, your mates' hides, your dancefloors' hides and, quite possibly, your mum's hide. Absolute slappage of the funkiest order: "Jungle Champion" is a bounced-out bubbler with a rising Zinc-style bassline that's harmonically tuned to perfection and a guttural Batonion vocal while "Rage" plays a swinging 60s wild card with its instrumental elements and unabashed bounce. Shaking and jumping with a tight bongo break, it suddenly switches from swinging to savage as the amens fire up mid way. Rewind, come again.

Review: Not content with absolutely smashing the game with their Deep Dark & Dangerous label this year, Truth return to one of their strongest spiritual homes: Deep Medi Music. Naturally they're packing some serious sentiments: "Lion" is a pounding roller that chugs with an industrial strength toxic bassline and demonic call from Teklife's Taso. "Messages" flips the situation for a much lighter, mystical and spatial exploration with fluttering break echoes and unhurried, yearning chords. Finally we're knocked seasick by the slobbering kicks and boa-like bass of "Ruffneck" which doesn't so much as live to up to its name but sets a new benchmark in dangerous, knife-edge ruffneckism. Powerful frequencies.

Review: Few Portuguese producers can boast as strong a track record as Trikk, whose high reputation was founded on fine singles for the likes of Optimo Trax, Hypercolour, ManMakeMusic, Lossless, Pets Recordings and, most recently, Innervisions. Here he returns to the latter with his most ambitious project to date: a debut album rich in tribal drums, exotic synthesizer motifs, humid electronics and all manner of global musical influences. Naturally there is a number of bespoke, floor-friendly tech-house and deep house cuts to enjoy, but the album's genius primarily lies in the producer's devotion to mood and melody. There may be plenty of tracks that would sound good in DJ sets, but it also works as an album to listen to from start to finish: something that can rarely be said about house albums.

Review: Paul Woolford's second album under the Special Request alias is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2013's Soul Music. While that was little less than a strobe-fired romp through Woolford's early, rave-era influences, Belief System is an altogether more complex and considered affair. With 23 tracks, the album took three years to produce, contains a number of modular hardware explorations, and features elements of tracks recorded by Woolford as far back as 1993. The sheer breadth and depth of the material is, at times, staggering, as the veteran Leeds producer giddily mixes and matches elements of electro, techno, cinematic soundtracks, hardcore, acid, jungle and experimental electronica. In a word: stunning.

Review: Since this EP dropped on vinyl earlier in the year, the sizeable title track has become one of the most ubiquitous peak-time anthems around. That's not meant as a criticism; few do rush-inducing musical moments quite like Dusky, and "Square Miso" is one of their most euphoric productions to date. It's something of a retro-futurist treat, with colossal piano riffs and dewy-eyed vocal samples riding thunderous drums and a booming, mind-altering bassline. For extra spine-tingling pleasure, check out the beat-free "Reprise" version, which wisely emphasizes the "Strings of Life" style pianos and synthesized strings, and the warehouse-friendly, Inner City style throb of "LF10".

Review: In 2015 DJ Harvey made his hugely anticipated return to Ibiza and made Pikes the home for his Mercury Rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real Ibiza, the incredible history of the hotel (aka The Chelsea of Ibiza) and a genuine love for music. This Balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by DJ Harvey has seen Mercury Rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade. The next step in the story sees him launch Pikes Records - the first record label founded by Pikes owners and Ibiza Rocks co-founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. From his own Locussolus project's slow burner "Next To You" (Marcy Rising edit), to fellow London disco heroes Idjut Boys who serve up "One For Kenny" where they get really deep. There's also party favourite Gatto Fritto with "Invisible College" and Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan, on form as always, with Chris Munoz on the scorcher "Zona De Perigo".

Review: Hot Digits enjoyed Kellini's last EP so much that they asked him to come back and this time he's brought fellow Norwegian Saskin S: who follows his The Game EP from last year. The two bring some serious heat with this bunch of energetic nu-disco cuts. Starting off with the neon-lit boogie of "Break A Leg" followed by the low slung groove of "In Doubt" which really takes things deep. It comes alongside remixes from rising Irish producer Stephen Richards, whose rendition of "In Doubt" gets some groovy summertime vibes happening (to get any decent Disco Stu in the mood) while Chewy Rubs' From The Deep dub of "Resaca" takes things down a darker and headier route: which would be perfect for late night mood lighting on the dancefloor.

Review: The Night Bass crew just keep on throwing out KO punches. Hot on the heels of the label boss AC Slater's debut album Outsiders and the killer V/A "Summer Phases" EP comes this rampant four-tracker from UK machine twister Taiki Nulight. It's some of his deadliest material, too; "Dead End" is drunken wobbler where the bass leads you down some very dark pathways, "Horn Porn" (a collabo with the ubiquitous Lorenzo) is a high frequency flexing soul-shaker with a series of system-slapping drums while "Everybody In The Club" (with Mikey B) adds a little off-beat ruffage with a seriously aggy hornets-nest bassline. "Trippin' Up" closes the show with one of Taiki's heaviest designs to date. Broken, groaning, gnarly and metallic, Taiki's taking no prisoners today mate.

Review: Shady power moves from Kanine: Having already taken us "Into The Dark" on Twisted Beatz earlier this year, now he's trapping us in "The Shadows" and there's no way possible way to escape. Not that you'd want to escape, mind; with its orchestrated samples and drop into a dual-textured bassline that both groans and purrs, "The Shadows" has some of the best views of the dancefloor you'll ever get. "Invincible" holds us hostage even more with more of a classic brittle Belgian-sounding roughness to its grotty Q&A riff. Both kill it in two exceptional ways... You gonna bark all day little doggy?

Review: Breakbeat Paradise is very good at satisfying our funky needs, never failing to come through with some blissful, sample-heavy party bangers for all walks of life. It's a mixed bag, as per usual, and this will surely appeal to DJs with wider sound palettes, from the hip-hop heads to the disco junkies. Coming across almost like edits, the sounds of peeps like B Side and DJ Maars manage to incorporate so many elements of dance music into single arrangements, and these tunes are surely what is needed to get the dancefloor going; whether it's your bag or not, you won't be able to resist their funky touch.

Today we're inspecting the construction site of Artikal Music UK's next project. Founder J:Kenzo employed eleven professional and highly skilled architects to carefully design, build and create a handcrafted compilation full of music he admires. As J:Kenzo explains: "The tracks included were filtered through from artists that have previously released on Artikal or have some connection with myself either being played on my Rinse FM shows or live sets". Considering the quality of each and every track, only two years of fabrication to finish off this product is remarkably short. Volume One of "The Architects" reflects J:Kenzo's refined taste in dubstep and drum and bass. On the 2 x 12" record, you'll find some absolute masterpieces from amongst others D-Operation Drop, Causa, Compa, Argo, DubDiggerz and J:Kenzo himself. The Architects' series, a yearly showcase filled with content from the label's artists plus VIP and remixes as well as bringing through new talent, will make the foundations of dubstep shake undoubtedly.

Further into this bountiful beat-package we hit soothing chords a wobbled-out bassline that nods neatly at the Zinc school of thought and "Oblivion" that takes us straight back to 94 on a blissful rave breaks tip. Throw in impeccable remixes such as Midnight Phulin's spiral bass freak out and breezy jazz-tinged drum & bass from Rho and you've got yourself a prize winning package.

Review: They're back! Following a year or so of bookings, Sub Zero and Original Sin's legendary partnership Generation Dub comes correct with two massive back-breaking productions. "Back In Business" says it all. Having been on dubplate with only these guys and Hype to play for several years, its wily riff and chop-burning bass are now available for all of us and the world is better place. "Ya Tink Ya Bad", one of their most revolutionary cuts from 2005, also gets a muscular G Dub 2017 reboot. Massive in every direction.

Review: KiNK's taster for his up and coming album on Running Back is here. We don't know if the title is inspired by the Scottish town that techno larrikins Clouds are from, or the sleepy mining town in Western Australia: it's anyone's guess! The Bulgarian hardware maverick brings us some funked up disco loops, reminiscent of DJ Sneak's Sneaky Trax imprint back in the day. "Perth" is a prime example of his unstoppable knack for good times. Taken from the new Playground LP, the three versions here are dripping with grease. Split between the original, a chord mix (which is brooding and epic) and a funky beat version full of sultry latin percussion: it's all you ever wanted from a single. Perfect house music for techno DJs and techno music for disco DJs.
