Relax (POoK remix) - (5:26) 138 BPM
Relax (Pixel Fist remix) - (4:08) 140 BPM
Review: The Dirty Kitchen Rave team have unveiled a fiery collection indeed here, welcoming not only the innovative production talents of - Urbano -, but also three keen remixers to deliver this 'Relax' EP in style. The original track is a spicy one, laced with hard hitting robotic-style synth designs and subtle, eastern-sounding chord progressions, culminating in a hard hitting chopper of a drop. Remix wise, we firstly see MINT touch down with a more sublow approach to the arrangement, making the most of those fiery vocals, before POok gives the track a much more abstract, soundscape-driven feel. Finally, Pixel Fist unleashes a throwdown dubstep-sounding overhaul, giving the project one final dash of originality to close upon.

Pendulums - (5:41) 138 BPM
Talkin' Bout - (6:18) 135 BPM
Review: 2nd Phase is the latest act to appear on Bek Audio. In keeping with the prevailing sound on the label, the title track is a peak-time affair. Led by propulsive percussion and a rolling rhythm, it makes for a hypnotic club track. "Pendulums" sees the duo opt for a different approach. While still focused on the dance floor, it is focused on piledriving kicks and bursts of white noise. Layered over the arrangement are ravey stabs that lend the track an ominous feeling. "Talkin' Bout" is a more house-focused sound. It's powered by rolling snares, subtle filters and some of the most hypnotic vocal samples you'll hear all year.

Following amazing deep dives into the works of Keith Sweat and scores of films like Friday, US jungle OG 6Blocc continues to writhe in Cali chams of BT&H with this second volume of Amen flips. Maintaining the soulful flavours and feels of the originals, while giving them a good old gully boost, highlights include the slick funk and golden grooves of 'Thuggish' the big disco feels of 'BNK' and the biggie fronted finale 'Notorious Thugs'. Review: The "Falling Down EP" marks 8Kays' impressive debut on Watergate Records, showcasing the talents of Ukrainian sound-producer and live act Iryna Shvydka. The EP opens with "Falling Down," a collaborative effort with Buenos Aires-based producer and live act Juan Hansen, resulting in a captivating blend of electronic progressive sounds. The EP takes a different turn with the remix by Dutch duo Colyn & Beswerda, who infuse "Falling Down" with a tougher edge while retaining its melodic intricacies while Chris Avantgarde contributes his own rework with his bold and memorable production style. And to send you off on a cloud of musical bliss, the EP finishes with "Lyra," a solo track by 8Kays herself. Think: floaty, dreamy vibes with these cool, cascading arpeggios that'll leave you feeling all happy and relaxed. Perfect way to end the ride!

Review: Next up from 903Lun, an aquatic leap into some of the murkiest 140 we have heard so far this year, landing on the ever ready Noizion with four tracks of pure steppers bliss. We open up with 'Back In Time', a melodic title track that allows us to drift through floating pad textures and wonky drum types, followed by the more haunted soundscapes of 'E Shock', which utilises bumping subs and crunchy synths to deliver a pretty mind blowing roller. Next, dubwise chord delays and spacious reverberations, laced with a wicked bassline below on 'Frog Venom' again sees the themes switch, before we close off on the creeping, syncopated rhythms of 'In The Woods'. Awesome work.

Review: First there was business techno, now comes Stadium Techno. The brainchild of Ackermann, this sample-heavy release takes a wry look at underground music. "Daft Punk Is Playing At My Garage" is a high-paced minimal track that features familiar filters, while "Never Gonna Give You Up" delivers a tribal-themed inspiration of the Rick Astley standard. Ackermann is also capable of more serious productions - which he showcases on the rolling "Heartbreak" and the surging chords and stuttering vocals of "Good For Me". That said, his propensity for a laugh is never too far away - and it re-appears on the jittery groove of "Bassline Donk".

Review: The Sprechen team have delivered a tasty selection of futuristic house-driven taste on this latest link up with Acolyte, unveiling three dancefloor ready bubblers with a tonne of original nostalgic influence woven throughout. First up, we take in the title track 'Helter Skelter', a steady, moog-driven chop through old school drum processing and euphoric pad textures, before the swirling synth patterns and distant vocal reverberations of 'Kill The Bill' sweep into play. Finally, 'Sirens' slows the pace down massively with a much calmer combination of moog-like bass notation and atmospheric texturing, rounding off this one with a dash of additional finesse.

Review: Adam K. Roll first got to know the Echo Inspectors through a chance encounter, but it took another 15 years before he made his debut on Primary Colours. Not that this is a deterrent for Kroll, the label and the listener. On The Final Call, he delivers a unique take on dub. The title track features slivers of Jamaican toasting. Remaining in abstract territories, both "Into The Ocean (Reborn)" and "Kassiopeia Dub" have echoes of Pole's digital dub pathos. It's not all introspective sound scapes though. "Heliospheric" is a wonderfully woozy deep house roller. Echo Inspectors also impress with an evocative, gently chugging take on "Into The Ocean (Reborn)".

Review: Macedonian artist Advek gets his hands dirty with this Genesis EP, going deep on that Romanian sound in a way you might expect from the likes of Sepp, Nu Zau or Vid. Holding down a solid groove in from the get go, "Backyard" introduces those subtle atmospheres with disparate chords and reverb oh so slightly, while then getting a little heavier with tinges of Detroit electro in "Bungee" - wicked claps. Then diving back into the groove once again we have "Direct" with its dubby tinges and quality control. Looking for groove? Stop here.

Review: Described by TAU as a "Ukranian prodigy", Aikon has taken his brand of wide-eyed, heads-down dancefloor fare to labels including Renaissance, Diynamic, Multinotes and Radikon. He's clearly a genuine talent, because the This Is Power EP is excellent. His trademark sound sits somewhere between warehouse-ready tech-house, deep house and neo-trance, with occasionally nods towards dark disco. That blueprint is explored to the fullest on the EP-leading title track, a mind-mangling affair full of faintly threatening square wave bass, shimmering chords, jacking machine drums, dubbed-out melodic motifs and rave-ready stabs. He reaches for echo-laden minor key organ stabs, dark noises and clandestine beats on the aptly titled 'Big', before opting for a deeper and smoother sound of 'Hypnotic'. Closing cut 'Just Wanna Dance', meanwhile, is a mind-mangling slab of tech-house hypnotism.

Review: This latest collection of rave-ready rollers comes to us from the Celsius Recordings crew, a collective who have assembled a very tidy collection of artists across this vibrant new collection exploring six tracks of dancefloor-ready bliss. Opening up with the throwback subs sweeps and groovy percussion of Al Pack's 'Don't Cry', next to Seathasky's emotive vocal bubbler in 'Sprites' and a tidy rap-along original from SundayGrooves entitled 'Raindrops', we can see the project kick-off in real style. Next, Sykes unleashes some real dynamite across the grizzly subs of 'Desire', next to Aleyum's gnarly subby sizzler in 'Saturday Superlative', and WUFO's tidy closer with the sumptuous pad synths of 'Echo Chamber'. Review: Alan Fitzpatrick's latest release starts with the crackle of vinyl and dubbed out drums on "Patience". It marks the beginning of a track - and a release - that is less characteristic for the storied producer. Gentle pulses and a rickety back beat guide these elements, leading the listener to a hypnotic place where woozy chords prevail. Along the way, "Patience" drops into seductive breakdowns. Fitzpatrick teams up with Reset Robot on "Mule Subjective". Led by robust break beats, it sees the duo weave swirling melodies into the arrangement. "Neptune Realms" is even further removed from Fitzpatrick's typical sound, with serene ambient textures flowing and ebbing mournfully.

Review: "Kind of... Robotnick" the third installment in the Simple Music series, presents a diverse collection of tracks that sees the Italian legend provide both instrumental and vocal numbers. With tracks like "Lipstick" exploring the complexities of personal image and "What You Think of Me" delving into the insecurities of modern life, the lyrical narratives add depth and relatability to the album's themes. "Kiss Me Love Goodbye" offers a poignant reflection on the banality of contemporary romance, juxtaposed with a woman's refusal to succumb to trite expressions of affection. Meanwhile, dance-floor oriented instrumentals like "Moving Light" and "Frenzy Games" infuse energy and rhythm, showcasing Robotnick's adeptness at crafting infectious beats.

Review: Once again, the legendary skill sets of Alix Perez are on show for all to see, with this sizzling new collection of 140 rollers looking like another monumental collection from 1985 Music. First up, Psychosis gives us a swampy stomp through gnarly bass drones and bone-chilling atmospheric excitations, followed by Flowdan's killer appearance on 'Militia', a more abstract tweak fest across metallic reverberations and hard hitting, poetic lyricism. Next, glittering synth work gives us more rumbling goodness on 'Circadian', which sees Visages join the party, before Ebb lands of 'Hazchem' for one final smokey spike of original stepper flavour. Instead the Audaz boss serves up another typically classy bunch of reworkings, drawing on sources that include Change ft Jocelyn Brown's 'Angel In My Pocket' ('I Remember All So Clearly'), Lenny Williams' 'Midnight Girl' ('The Music Plays And Plays'), Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' ('I Got To Get Away') and Talking Heads' 'Seen And Not Seen' ('A Larger Forehead'), to name but a few.

"Lust" kicks off the EP with a linear and tension building number while "Kong" holds down some strong synthwave, growling basslines and exotic percussion. His is, though, open to others interpreting his work in different ways - hence this remixed version of his 2023 compilation album 'El Silence'. There's much to admire throughout, from the reggaeton and tropical disco-influenced bounce of Polo & Pan's rework of 'Je Veux Mourrir Avec Toi', and Yuksek's deliciously jaunty and percussive Latin nu-disco take on 'Antonio', to the shoegaze-goes-Balearic flex of 'Caresse 1 (Dorion Remix)', and Kraak & Smaak's joyously colourful and club-ready Latin dub disco interpretation of 'Antonio'.

We begin our exploration into this one with the almost R&G style instrumental chops and clicky percussive pops, followed by the more shuffled, floaty rhythmic work of 'Mist' and the more grime-inspired drumline of 'Rckz'. Review: Within contemporary techno circles, Reclaim Your City is a revered label - and this split release goes a long way to explaining its appeal. Autonome boss Arkan starts Heimat II with the frosty synths and subtle back beats of "Submarine". Decka changes up the mood on "Circumvent", where a visceral, muddy groove prevails. There's a similar aesthetic on Yant's "Moving". Set to a faster pace, the track resounds to piercing stabs and insistent percussion. Hitam's "Venusian Wind" marks another shift in style. While following a stripped-back sensibility, it sees the emerging producer apply dubbed out influences to an angular rhythm, with devastating impact.

Re Bulele (feat Fox Meropa) - (8:21) 123 BPM
Re Bulele (FNX Omar remix feat Fox Meropa) - (6:18) 121 BPM
Review: Aroop Roy serves up two new slices of his trademark globally-inspired deep house. 'Re Bulele' (feat Fox Meropa) is, in its Original form, a lilting affair with rolling beats and a simple electronic bassline topped with a smooth, melodic, Afro-style male vocal and, as the track progresses, sweeping synth washes. The accompanying FNX Omar Remix is slightly darker and more ominous in feel, with the track's electronic elements brought further to the fore and the vocal applied more sparingly, while the EP's completed by 'Mama Mwana', which has a similarly gentle, laidback feel to the title track but is more organic in its instrumentation.

Joss Moog & Around7 - "Shine" - (5:27) 118 BPM
Review: After a four-year hiatus, Joss Moog and Around7 have decided to reboot their Ondule Recordings imprint. Fittingly, the label's first missive of this new era comes from Around7 himself, making his return to action after a similarly lengthy break to recharge the batteries. The Paris-based producer begins with 'Rise', where subtly evolving (and pleasingly jazzy) electric piano loops ride a metronomic bassline and unfussy house drums before ushering in some superb jazz-funk bass guitar and mazy keyboard solos. Around7 then joins the dots between filter heavy 'French Touch' disco-house, jazzy nu-disco and warehouse-ready hedonism on 'Cuttin' Straight, before joining forces with Joss Moog on the '80s soul sampling deep house strut of 'Shine'.

The Chord Chronicles
Deepozzarella - (7:30) 130 BPM
Chordlift - (7:19) 128 BPM
Tension - (12:00) 126 BPM Hot
Review: It's been a while since Andreas 'Audio' Werner put out new material, so The Chord Chronicles is a welcome return and a suitably soulful soundtrack for wintry nights. As usual, this three-tracker draws on US deep house influences and a distinctly European sounding minimal sound, effortlessly inhabiting a halfway place between these sounds. "Tension" is a hypnotic roller, led by hollowed out drums and featuring sensual chords. On "Chordlift", Werner embraces jazzy sounds to deliver the kind of freeform organic jam you might expect from a particularly mellow Theo Parrish. Best of all though is "Deepozzarella", where the seminal German producer drops the kind of breathless deep house track that calls to mind vintage Pepe Bradock. Stellar stuff.

Review: Last spotted on various Liondub International VA collections, the currently unstoppable B-Plexx makes his full EP debut on the US label with these four fiery bruisers. 'Voodoo' stirs up some serious black magic to set the scene. Tight drums, groaning basses and an ice cold sample, it leaves us under no illusion as to what's next... 'Artillery' is all about those buzzy high frequency licks, 'Displacement' is a wonky old affair that you could imagine someone like Tyke or Hazard dropping at 6am and twisting minds while 'Power Of Mind' closes on a dark, demonic tip. Feel the burn!

Review: Vibraphone Records kicks off its 2024 with a mighty release that pays great tribute to the city of Detroit. Basic Realities is the artist behind the originals and the first is 'B-9', a percussive, loopy tech roller with vocal sounds and dreamy pads drifting in and out of focus. Motor City icon Kevin Saunderson then steps up to remix and does so with more warm and surging basslines and thudding drum funk. 'Viento Lunar' cuts loose on some inventive melodies and cosmic rays of energy that unfold over tinny beats and 'Endless Clouds' rounds out with some more dusty drums and nice spangled synths that surge through the cosmos.

Review: Basile De Surenses' last single, released in the summer of 2023, was an undeniably on-point exploration of the classic disco-house sound. This time round, he channels his inner early '90s raver on a trio of energetic, sweat-soaked workouts. Basile De Surenses first joins the dots between breakbeat-driven hip-house and bass-heavy warehouse workouts on the breathless and brilliant 'AAA', before pitching down a familiar hardcore and jungle break to techno tempo on the wide-eyed, hands-aloft rush of 'BBB' (check the raw rave stabs, looped vocal snippets and boisterous bass). To round things off, the young French producer reverts to jacking 4/4 beats on the excitable and gurning 'Leto Doesn't Want U To Get In Da Club'.

Review: Nomine Sound has a strong reputation to uphold with underground dance music, with this latest offering from Basura being another top notch collection to their catalogue, unveiling four fiery hitters that push the boundaries of dubstep to the very edge. We open up with the bubbling sub pops and constantly shifting drumscapes of 'Doubt', before 'Neva Neva' explores more metallic sounding synth & drum work following closely behind. From here, 'Momentous' focuses on scintillating drum processing and some seriously eerie soundscapes behind, setting a moody tone, into which the tense arpeggios and jittering melodics of 'Felon' rush in, closing the project out with a bang.

Review: Bawrut makes a triumphant return to Ransom Note Records with the Remix Pack EP, a stunning collection of reinterpretations of his recent work. Featuring a lineup of top-tier underground producers, this four-track whirlwind of club bangers embodies the best of electronic music in 2024. Marc Romboy transforms "Que Quiere Usted" into a relentless dance floor stomper, while Fernanda Arrau infuses "Sonidero Usera" with tropical rainforest sounds and classic house elements for a deep and dirty club workout. Hologram Teen takes her work in an unorthodox direction with her signature '80s computer game synth work, seamlessly blending staccato Chiptune stabs with a sleazy bass line. Nandele's remix of "Calima" from Bawrut's 2022 record adds manic percussion and Kraftwerk-inspired synth arpeggios, resulting in a simultaneously anxiety-inducing yet meditative slice of machine funk.

Harlesden Shuffle
Harlesden Shuffle (dub mix) - (5:46) 126 BPM Hot
French Orkestra (original mix) - (5:18) 124 BPM
Review: On his first outing on Glasgow's Sounds of Lava Lava, Beartone Records founder - and occasionally Defected contributor Bearface (real name Raj Panasa) successfully joins the dots between his usual brand of thickset house music and the kind of dusty jazz records most often found nestling in the shelves of backstreet record stores. 'Harlesden Shuffle (Dub Mix)' does a terrific job in wrapping (sampled) jazz instrumentation - hazy horns, twinkling electric piano sounds, heady vocal samples and even the odd bustling drum break - around chunky house beats and a booming, sub-heavy bassline. Panasa opts for a more elastic and vintage St Germain-influenced sound on 'French Orkestra', where heady woodwind and brass solos dance atop a classic-sounding jazz-house beat.

Review: Ben Sterling follows a series of releases for Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels with this killer EP on Oblong. Inspired by the classic sounds of original UK tech house, Step Forward is executed masterfully. The title track resounds to bugged out acid and dubby textures, with Sterling adding dramatic climaxes with the use of well-placed snare rolls. As is the norm for releases on Bushwacka's label, there is a break beat track, which Sterling delivers flawlessly through the robust, bleepy rhythm of "Outtaspace". There's also room for a stripped back, tripped out contribution in the form of "Derpous". And the inimitable label owner also makes an appearance, with an irresistible percussive remix of the title track.

Now it gets a second crack of the whip courtesy of crate diggers extraordinaire Athens Of The North, with 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' an ultra-slick slice of early 80s boogie while the accompanying 'Just Give Love A Try' treads a more syrupy, soulful path.

Review: B2 Recordings rolls out more of its quality-assured deep house here with label head Bengoa stepping up next for a new three-tracker that comes with featured guests Kristina Berger and Brothers' Vibe. 'Idyot' kicks off with deep and pulsing synths and clacking hits that bring an early Chicago vibe next to the libidinous and erotic vocals which really tease. 'Meet Me Halfway' sinks into a super silky groove that is deep as you like and driven by stylish drum hits under a muttered vocal. 'Come On Now' then sinks into a more acid-laced atmosphere with sustained chords keeping you on edge next to loose and jumbled percussion. It's a stylistically diverse EP, this one.

As always with both parties, the focus is firmly on the dance as Bennie works us through our paces bassline after bassline... Review: Benza may be a new producer, but Warrior leaves no doubt that he is a name to watch. The title track revolves around a relentless rhythm and a powerful bass, with eerie samples adding to the sense of drama. "Check Mate" is based on a similar approach. On this occasion, Benza deploys a more swung rhythm, adding muffled vocals and frazzled synth stabs. "Enchanted Breaks" sees Benza ramp up the tempo to deliver a lean, percussive track that exudes funk, while he draws on a different influence for "Ahyep". Channelling ebm influences, he delivers a hard-edged, peak-time banger. The same approach applies on "Submarine", a bruising techno affair.

It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. A selection of them feature on this, the first of two EPs from the pair.

Ping Pong Ball Gag (Chris Liebing remix) - (6:55) 137 BPM Hot
Review: Bjarki follows a hectic schedule in 2023 -which included releases on his own label - with this debut for CLR. "Ping Pong Ball Gag", which the Icelandic originally self-released in 2021 as part of a pandemic project, is minimal techno at its finest. Led by a stripped back groove and dense, chain mail percussion, it features a ponderous vocal sample throughout the arrangement. Bjarki adds some subtle drops, adding to the hypnotic sensibility. Label owner Chris Liebing's remix ups the pace and fuses doubled-up claps to the lean arrangement. These elements provide the basis for the CLR boss to add in the vocal sample and maintain the hypnotic aesthetic of Bjarki's original track.

All tailored for mixing pleasure and those ice cold 3am dancefloor moments, Barrel shoots first and asks questions later as 'System Off' oozes out of the speakers with spooky intent. Elsewhere 'WTF Is Your Problem' says what we're all thinking by way of a torrential bassline and skitty breaks, 'Professional Kill' strips things back in a really quirky, funky off-beat way and 'When We Want To Feel' finishes the EP with more steam powered funk justice. This remix by Bou injects fresh energy into the original track, taking it from jump-up territory to full-fledged drum & bass annihilation. The remix wastes no time in establishing its dominance. Gone are the original's playful elements; Bou slams the listener with a barrage of breakneck drumwork and a sub-bassline that will rattle your speakers. The signature jump-up sound is still present, but it's been twisted and contorted to create a more aggressive soundscape.

Played by: Boycot
Review: Gent's DNB star, Boycot, delivers a potent double-dose of bass weight with "Man Down / On The Reg" on Symmetry Recordings. "Man Down" kicks things off with a freight train of a low-end, a pulsating sub that underpins the entire track. Distorted vocal chops and rhythmic stabs add an industrial edge, while the cleverly placed snare hits keep the energy high. It's a dark and driving cut, perfect for late-night rave sessions. "On The Reg" takes a slightly different approach, opting for a more rolling bassline and a dubbier soundscape. The atmosphere is thick and hazy, with echoing delays and swirling textures creating a sense of mystery. The track builds subtly throughout, culminating in a euphoric breakdown before dropping back into the hypnotic groove.
