Review: Clawhammer get mucky with two cutthroat remixes courtesy of Filthy Habits. First up comes a devilish twist on Aweminus & Danger's "Get Ya Respect" as the bassline gets flipped harmonically into a much more hair-raising experience while Syndicat's "Illusions" is turbo-charged into a brass blazing beats with a bassline so abrasive it also acts as an exfoliator. Heavy stuff... Filthy by name!

Review: Ten Ton Beats was started in 2011 by Rekless, since then the imprint has discovered many exciting debutants and become a gallant stepping stone for many artists. 'Flat Earth' is slow moving and raw with sharp drums, a disgustingly low sub and maybe one the funniest vox samples we've heard in a while. 'Addict VIP' is (for want of better words) an absolute banger, the slow, understated wavy sub is just so naughty you become totally transfixed by it, it's a good job there's a handful of whistles and drum crashes thrown in to wake you up. Damageman's remix of MQ's 'Slammin' sees simple breaks layered with early rave chords, wails and vox. 'Deadly Force' is deep and dark, bleeding the dirtiness jump up, with eloquent techy elements mixed with the occasion snip of soft female vocal, we are rating this track highly.

Review: Headed up by Brighton's Fingerman, Hot Digits Music return with London's Steve Gladdis aka Smashed Atoms - who after some spectacular releases on his own Magic Circles imprint and Paper Music, explodes onto the label with "Cut This Way". Sounding like it takes it cues from NYC disco legends Blondie as much as it does from American rapper Dimples D. "Wonderlust" (extended version) goes for more of a lo-slung deep house vibe which we found pretty sweet, while the bleepy "Lost Someone" gets back to the program with some sunny party vibes. Also featuring some superb remix action from Get Down Edits featuring Micko Roche and the Chopshop regular from Montreal: Dave Gerrard.

Review: Power up! Turno lets rip with the second part of his debut album. Once again it's an all-out sesh of the most eclectic order with a firm focus on the heavier side of his repertoire. Kicking off with a classic roughhouse Turno jump-up sound on the title track we're then hurled into a tech-teased bassline hurricane on "Covenant" while "Decapitated" genuinely lives up to its name. Finally we hit "Jekyll & Hyde". A deep Shogun-style stepper with lean elements and an iced soul, it's a fitting way to end the second powerful instalment of an artist who's absolutely smashed this year to pieces.

Brooklyn Dub Pt. 2 - (5:20) 174 BPM
from $1.97
Review: Achtung baby! Cologne's Brain Brainstorm returns to Liondub with this powerful seven-piece collection. Dubby flavours, hazy skanks, junglist beats and toxic levels of bass all play a lead role throughout: "Kill A Drum Pan" hits with tidal textures, "Forward" strips us back even further to the drum groove, "Moving On" fuses some expert cosmic drum work and sensual soul from Lady D-Zire, "Inside The Vaults" is all about the contrast between the euphoric pads and sizzling Lomax-style bass riffs while "Red Eyes" hits with an emphatic and heavily conscious vocal. Finally we're treated big horn magic on "Let It Go" (don't worry it has nothing to do with the Frozen song of the same name) before concluding with the rippled waves and tightly plucked guitar of "Brooklyn Dub Pt 2". An impeccable collection of modern jungle - this is close to a whole album. No filler in sight.

Review: Lego Edit is Italian Diego Lelli who returns to his eponymous edit imprint and two more soulful scorchers on Dancefloor Edits Original Disco Cuts. "Always" is a respectful edit of a certain legend - a wonder of Motown, if you will, and this timeless anthem gets wonderful resplice by Leali here. Next up "Nightlife" (Lego Classic edit) is another disco classic from the late seventies that will appeal to all those lo-slung crusaders out there. We said it last time and it must be stated again that this guy from Bologna has been in overdrive throughout the last year, hammering out a few dozen releases already in 2017. How this guy can ever sleep between all the edits and DJing is anyone's guess: but keep 'em coming pal!

Review: 2017 has been an incredible year for Zha's White Peach imprint, with a plethora of high profile releases hitting stores at regular intervals. The latest in this impeccable line comes from Bristol's own; Bengal Sound. The title track is a work of art, with heavily swung mysterious eastern sounding samples and rolling hi hats taking the lead. We move quickly from that to dubstep fueled artillery with '2 Worlds' which focusses on tremendously heavy sub frequencies and unpredictably skippy drum arrangements. The EP continues with the dubstep theme as we move onto the B-side with 'Silence Soundboy'. This one is pleasingly reminiscent of early DMZ releases, bringing the combination of subs and space out to play. Finally we wrap up with the haunting dub-infused arrangement of 'Pablo'. This one is ghastly, with plenty of percussive and melodic vibrancy lurking just below the swampy surface. This one is definitely another winner from the seemingly unstoppable White Peach brand!

Continuing to pepper the dance with his weekly tune dispatches, "Danger" is another sure-fire floor-bouncer with a Q&A riff that tickles the highs and lows harmonically while stuttering vocal textures add just the right amount of agginess in the background. Once again Q is bang on the money right here...

Review: Followers of ragga influenced jungle will already know all about Furney, he's earned his stripes, with releases on labels such as LDMusic, Good Looking Records, C.I.A Deep Kut and Liquid V to name a few, here we see what he's got for Soul Deep Exclusives 'Jamacian Jazz' is a nostalgic stroll down the road of jungle past with the bulk of the track built around real twangs of bass, and jungle breaks which we can't help but relate back to Roni Size's influential New Forms LP. 'See Mi Yah' is a sunshine drenched squeeze of ragga jungle with quick amens placed between syncopated patterns. 'Iowa' is our favourite track of the release, fast passed drums tumbling like cascading waterfalls, a deadly low sub sulking beneath the track ready to pounce and hot horns bringing some sun.

Review: Alistair Gibbs takes time out from churning out dancefloor gold on his Friends & Relations imprint to make a welcome return to Heist Recordings. Predictably, he's in fine fettle throughout. Opener "Affirmation" is an almost overwhelmingly positive chunk of loose and baggy disco house that's similar in feel - if not sound - to Tom Trago classic "Use Me Again". "Agilo E Olio", on the other hand, is a much more driving and low-slung affair, with key wickedly rubbery bass, cowbell-heavy percussion and fuzzy Clavinet lines providing heaps of dancefloor energy. Laurence Guy gives that track a warm, woozy and dreamy deep house makeover, before Nebraska rounds things off via the jaunty dub-house-meets-Maurice Fulton brilliance of EP standout "Big Plate Chicken".

Review: After ripping it up for labels like Northern Hertz and Foundation Audio, as of late, Denmark's Gaze Ill has absolutely no problems in tearing it down for the young and 'up-for-it' Cue Line label. "Space-Time" is the perfect opener, bouncing its subtle bass rolls like supersonic machine-gun spray, and accompanied by all sorts of eerie cosmic sounds, whereas "Mist" heads further into the cavernous echo that we expect such deep-minded dubstep to offer. "Spirit Of The Forces" is our choice cut, jacking out to some propah jungle infusions at the core of its groove, leaving TMSV's remix of "Space-Time" to leave us lingering outside the atmosphere. Utterly divine bass, right here!

Review: As far as active legendary producers go within the Grime scene, there aren't many with the same high level of consistency as Silencer. Fresh off the back of his super popular 'Butcher' EP, he teams up with the electric energy of Maxsta on 'Black Mask'. Silencer goes to work to provide a dark and thunderous instrumental backing for Maxsta to run riot over with his skippy vocal patterns and uniquely creative grasp of multisyllabic patterns whilst describing some of the dark events of his past and present. It's dark, weighty and an instant must for grime DJ's nationwide.

A true marching tune that gradually rises in intensity without ever losing its stately pace, it's the type of tune that was tailored for nights like System or DJs like Amit. Elsewhere we get seasick with the trippy glitches on "Seen" before going all-out darkside with the haunted humanisations on the foreboding "Cold Warning". Seriously heavy duty stuff as always from Headland. Man's having his pie and eating it right now.

Review: Almost four years have passed since Survival & Script first got together and the beats continue to keep flowing at a staggeringly consistent and a-class rate. Capturing the raw, rolling essence of drum & bass with every production, here are four more examples of their on-pointness: "Twisted" is a tunnelling slab of 1999 with a bassline that purrs from here to Omicron Persei-8, "Break It" is straight up tribal funk while "Native Girl" is a shaker-rattled roller with beautifully alluring vocal textures. Finally "Wake Up" bids us cheerio with a twisted two-step and a rampant technoid slap. Scarred for life.

"Don't You Wanna Dance" hits with a steel-melting bassline that cuts through the mix with alarming clarity, "Get It On" dims the lights for a little rolling healing in a rumpy pumpy bumpy bassline way while "Bath Salts" takes us deep down the wobble tunnel with trippy results. Finally "Atomic Blast" celebrates Nuke's spirit with an outrageous bassline punch-up that's reminiscent of a young Taxman. Boom.

Review: When he was asked to put together the fourth volume in Dekmantel's brilliant Selectors series, Joy Orbison decided to use the opportunity to pay tribute to the rich history of UK dance music. Predictably, his on-point selections join the dots between the past and the present, moving from the London beat poetry of James Messiah and hard-to-find 1991 UK hardcore of R Solution's surprisingly deep and melodious "Skinny Long Git", to the crunchy, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs IDM of JP Buckle's 1998, Rephlex-released oddity "One For Da Laydeez". Along the way, he finds space for the sparkling early D&B of "Lush" by Oblivion (AKA Source Direct), the low-slung, bass-heavy deep house/acid house fusion of L.E Bass and the analogue techyno idealism of Beatrice Dillon.

Review: Powerful funk fire from Bristol's serial editors Mako & Mr Bristow as they hit number three in their Stank Soul Edits series. Backed by a strong gospel vibe and raw gutsy female vocals across both sides, it's another sure-fire heater: the soaring sentiments of Ann Peebles command the A with an empowering ode to the allure of love's sweet sensation while the B is dedicated to the stirring prowess of Shirley Brown. Both crafted and beat-licked in M&MB's inimitable floor-warming style, and already galvanised on the airwaves by funk professor Craig Charles, it's another stank showdown that cannot be denied.

Fluttering with a cute but spooky bassline, laced with prominent vocals from bass singer-du-jour Charli Brix and charged with just the right amount of UKG soul, it's got all the hallmarks of a serious bassline anthem. Elsewhere things get gullier than Brighton pier as "Scatter Dub" lashes out with a broken glass bass, "Pick Up The Pace" gets twisted with some of Pavv's nastiest bass textures while "Gully Face" actually takes us down a much deeper bassline path than its name suggests. Complete with a wild and wily remix from Hamdi, this is one of Pavv's biggest EPs to date.

Review: As to be expected from Soul Deep Digital, we've been presented with a collection of expertly executed gloriously deep cuts, this time the imprint welcomes back Southampton dweller Avalon Rays for his 'Under The Stars EP'. The title track sees a collection of minor piano chords somberly dancing over a pattering drum pattern, while a hunting male vocal provides an emotive pull. 'Still Waters' a meditative vibe with a tribal drum pattern which appears between the main breaks and echoing shaman like calls, the sub on this is omnipresent and malevolent. 'Let Me Go' sees another collaboration between Avalon Rays and Kimberly Iji and her voice is the standout feature of the track, it soulfully and effortlessly dances over the piano led roller beneath with an impromptu sounding jazzy twang. 'Sorrow' again pairs a female vocalist with liquid blueprints, but creating a dream like quality with floaty pads, twinkling chimes and soft electric guitar.

A man fast establishing himself in the same league as Voltage or Serum or Heist in terms of just how versatile and creative he is with the dancefloor form, once again he doesn't disappoint; "Gun You Down" stabs with a Charge-style riff but kicks with a Bristol touch while "Salutes & Signals" rattles with a really interesting funk that's both angular (thanks to its sharp two-step) and warm (thanks to its juicy bassline) Neither disappoint. Get in key.

Review: Sunner Soul is from Saint Petersburg, but claims that his roots are drawn from Germany. The 30 year old further asserts that disco music was played at home from a young age, so it is about more than just music. Now as a producer, musician, DJ and record label owner, he presents his deep/funky/nu-disco/edits on his label Vintage Music. On the Right Cuts & Parts EP, we have the funky and filtered disco loops of "Soul Drifter" (original mix) or "Right Now" (original mix) which are reminiscent of early Cassius or Motorbass and similarly "Rainbow Set" (original mix) that equally features that distinct 'French Touch' on this dusty DJ tool. The Russian producer has had additional releases on hot disco labels such as Midnight Riot, Editorial and Funky Town in recent times and we expect to be hearing much more from this emerging talent in the months to come.

Review: The big bad TS7 returns to the forefront of the scene with his brand new single 'Judo' on the 'Rebeat' imprint. The Bradford based producer has become synonymous with the Bassline genre having released consistent bangers for as long as anyone can remember. This one takes an interesting turn, with an ethereal sounding, lo-fi intro section taking the lead before descending into synth driven madness come the breakdown. This one is a must have for TS7 and UK bass fans alike.

Review: Like the label's previous release, Ombra International's third EP is an all-star affair featuring contributions from a quartet of artists. Veneno kicks things off with the clandestine, post-punk dub-disco trip "Attencion Especial", before Teniente Castillo blasts off into space via the psychedelic synthesizer arpeggio lines, undulating acid flashes and extended guitar solos of EP highlight "Not That Way". Perel's "Hildegard" does a fine job in straddling the thin line between mind-altering acid house and quirky, off-kilter nu-disco, while former Nein and Magic Feet duo Roe Deers steal the show via the wonderfully weird, loose and eccentric closer "Metal Ants", a track that defies any attempts at categorization.

Review: Bad to the bone... Following his remarkable fusions with Earth earlier this year, the Bug continues to flex his finest collaborative muscles with two dirty, paranoid grime cuts. Flowdan takes the lead with an autobiographical tale over a cosmic dirge that palpitates with industrial rawness. Next up: Killa P and Irah who get savage over a sizzling reese bassline that builds and smoulders with intensity of a Hardware night at The End in 2005. Complete with two riddims, this is The Bug at his most direct and dangerous and ready for the dance.

Review: It would be fair to say that Niall Mannion's first EP for Pampa is amongst the Irish producer's most eccentric releases to date. While both "Your Heavy Head" and "Kitedub" are underpinned by bubbly, tech-house drums and electronics, neither is your average peak-time club cut. "Your Heavy Head" is smothered in eccentric noises and musical elements - think accordion riffs, wind chimes and snippets of Mannion's own weary vocals - while "Kitedub" is deep, drowsy and quietly picturesque with the Tough one's teary singing rising to the forefront at regular intervals. Speaking of vocal tearjerkers, Mannion does a good job manipulating his own contemplative lyrics on ambient closer "Ahsure".

Review: One of the most prolific and consistent basssmiths in the house/tech/broken beat axis, Robinson continues to raise the profile with four more mischief-making collaborations; Pelikann joins in for a little Python rattling on the twisted bass throw-down "Gettuh", NIQW and Ami Carmine collide with Jay for a little dirty soul shaking on "Right Back" while GAWP is onside for the a sweet strutting house groove that's tickled with a riff that's reminiscent of mid 2000s Get Physical material. Finally we have the epic stripped back jacker "Oblivious" with Vanilla Ace that drops into an immense hood-heaving mid-section and cowbell popping groove. Jay: 1 / World: 0 It's a knockout.

Review: Pow: Vinyl Junkie and Rachael EC's Ghetto Dub imprint is raising the heat with every release right now. Next up: 36 Hertz affiliate SR with a quartet of raw jungle escapades. "Marble Madness" is an all-out amen attack that refuses to quit before "Armageddon" reveals deeper layers with its spaced out breaks and dark funk twists. "Emoji" commands every love heart and happy face you can muster with its classic rave vocal, eerie pads and sense-blurring drum edits. Finally "Special Ops" is straight back to 94 with drums chops fizzed up by the devil himself.

Review: This debut single from previously unseen outfit LSD is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the trio is made up of legendary UK techno producers Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Dave Summer AKA Function. Given their collective history of making thumping, mind-altering techno, you'd expect Progress to be both heavy and trippy. That's certainly what you get from opener "Process 1", where psychedelic electronics and cascading, otherworldly noises rise above an armour-plated techno groove. They push the envelope even further on "Process 2", a track blessed with restless cymbal lines and weird, off-key electronics. In comparison, the similarly intense "Process 3" seems deep and woozy, though the incessant, 1990 style bleeps and "LFO" style synths guarantees a suitably hallucinogenic feel throughout.

Review: Discomatin co-founder and all-round Parisian selector don Saint James co-launches his new Chuwanaga label with this expertly curated compilation. In The Red is a deep dive into the exciting funk fusion coming out of London between 1980-83 as a new movement of black British musicians honed a sound that owes as much to soundsystem culture as it does disco. From the glistening instrumental flare of Index to the lavish synths and slap bass of Equa, this captures a unique and currently under-documented moment in groove history. Complete with detailed liner notes, this is a fantastic way to launch a new label. Not to be slept on.
