Review: Magic happens when Calibre and DRS collide. Both masters of space, imagery and story telling; they complement each other so well. Especially here... The piano-massaging "Sunrise" is the light from the dark as the pair make sense of the night before and capture the essence of a brand new day. Meanwhile on "Broken Wings" we're taken right back to Swerve with a subtle velvet disco hook that rises softly while DRS puts down one of the most important messages since "Angels Fall": we need to work together for this to work. Calls for unity don't come with much more authenticity.

Review: One of the elite breed of artists who can appear across the board from Shogun to Low Down Deep, verified roller king Voltage returns to his own imprint for two slices of dagger dance bassline fun. With its sandpaper bassline and fiery energy "Hot Knives" hits the throat and gives you a buzz from the toes up while "Resistance" is much more of a gutter-chomping mix treat with its low swinging gnarly bassline hitting well below the knees over a spacious Bristol style jazzy break. Cut to the chase.

Missing Pieces (feat Javeon) - (4:58) 172 BPM
from $1.96
Review: Hot on the heels of Monty's EP comes another barbed and bulging EP from 1985 bossman Perez. Tapping into his darker, heavier machine funk tendencies, this is Alix in 3am drum & bass dance mode: "Lucky Charm" is a purring subby low-rider, "Blips" is straight back to 2009 with its angular two-step, sinewy sound design and badman bass and "Nighthawks" is a dark soul roller with subtle samplecraft and pranged out basses. "Missing Pieces" brings us back down to earth safe and sound with a much dreamier atmosphere wrapped lavishly around Perez's light-footed beats and Javeon's distinctive soulful tones. 1985 out of 10.

Review: The Night Bass crew just keep on throwing out KO punches. Hot on the heels of the label boss AC Slater's debut album Outsiders and the killer V/A "Summer Phases" EP comes this rampant four-tracker from UK machine twister Taiki Nulight. It's some of his deadliest material, too; "Dead End" is drunken wobbler where the bass leads you down some very dark pathways, "Horn Porn" (a collabo with the ubiquitous Lorenzo) is a high frequency flexing soul-shaker with a series of system-slapping drums while "Everybody In The Club" (with Mikey B) adds a little off-beat ruffage with a seriously aggy hornets-nest bassline. "Trippin' Up" closes the show with one of Taiki's heaviest designs to date. Broken, groaning, gnarly and metallic, Taiki's taking no prisoners today mate.

Review: Not content with absolutely smashing the game with their Deep Dark & Dangerous label this year, Truth return to one of their strongest spiritual homes: Deep Medi Music. Naturally they're packing some serious sentiments: "Lion" is a pounding roller that chugs with an industrial strength toxic bassline and demonic call from Teklife's Taso. "Messages" flips the situation for a much lighter, mystical and spatial exploration with fluttering break echoes and unhurried, yearning chords. Finally we're knocked seasick by the slobbering kicks and boa-like bass of "Ruffneck" which doesn't so much as live to up to its name but sets a new benchmark in dangerous, knife-edge ruffneckism. Powerful frequencies.

Review: Lately we've witnessed well-respected dubstep imprints announce their spin-off release series. Subaltern Records is amongst those few, launching its first various artist compilation on the 20th of October 2017. Entitled as "Kaleidoscope" you can expect music from respectively Helktram, D-Operation Drop, ILL_K, Shu and Zygos on Volume 1. Interestingly quite a few new signees are being introduced to Subaltern via this four track EP, which makes us even more excited for the series' future. Briefly, this compilation of different styles and artists, attentively picked by label owner Mentha, is blending all together smoothly like a Kaleidoscope.

Review: Following on from releases on Relief and Crosstown Rebels, Samuel Walker and Gavin Royce have selected Dirtybird as the platform for their debut album. The US pair are sure to surprise with the gentle electronics of opening track "Sunday" and "Role Models", which sees them collaborate with OnCue to deliver a catchy electronic pop track, albeit one that is tethered in grimy bass. However "Best Track Ever" sees them revert to type and adopt the general approach of Claude Von Stroke's label with its cut-up vocals and bleeps bass tones. That said, their penchant for catchy hooks and pop influences is never too far away here and "My Own Thang", which features Sophiegrophy on vocals, is a bubbling, bouncy track, led by insistent, catchy vocals.

Review: Given that previous releases from the publicity-shy Sirs crew have been rather good, hopes are naturally high for their latest trip into wide-eyed, musically rich dancefloor fusion. As usual, there's a decidedly hazy, sun-kissed feel to the original version of "What a Day", which features Cinnamon Denise adding sumptuous vocals to an Afro-tinged deep house shuffler full of warm electric piano chords, live bass and Balearic instrumentation. Arguably even better is Manoo's thrillingly epic and dreamy Batacuda Remix, which not only boasts layered Brazilian drums but also some wild and wonderful synth solos. Sirs delivers an even lengthier, slightly more percussively intense tweak of the French house producer's revision, before treating us to a brilliant ambient "Reprise" crafted around swirling chords and delay-laden Fender Rhodes.

Review: Well consider us surprised to say the least: we'd have never of thought that the acid house anthem "Theme From S'Express" would get a re-release on Jamie Jones' Hot Creations powerhouse - not to mention some absolutely killer remixes. Originally released in 1989 and produced by the legendary Mark Moore (in collaboration with Pascal Gabriel) from their debut studio album, Original Soundtrack. It peaked at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1988 for two weeks and is considered as one of the earliest electronic music songs to incorporate sampling. The remixes come courtesy of Greek tech house hero Detlef - whose version is respectful to the original, but gives it an adequately modern reshape and works that 303 acid darn well. Lauer and Gerd Janson's Tuff City Kids remix keeps it in the late '80s realm, like they always do so well. It incorporates some steel drum presets and a hot Juno bassline.

Review: Paul Woolford's second album under the Special Request alias is a very different beast to its predecessor, 2013's Soul Music. While that was little less than a strobe-fired romp through Woolford's early, rave-era influences, Belief System is an altogether more complex and considered affair. With 23 tracks, the album took three years to produce, contains a number of modular hardware explorations, and features elements of tracks recorded by Woolford as far back as 1993. The sheer breadth and depth of the material is, at times, staggering, as the veteran Leeds producer giddily mixes and matches elements of electro, techno, cinematic soundtracks, hardcore, acid, jungle and experimental electronica. In a word: stunning.

Review: Ain't no messing around here; Enigma Dubz makes his debut on Hatcha's Hatched with some of his most frazzled and forthright jams. "Haters" don the hater-blockers with classic sheet metal bass rippage and orchestral tension, "In Heaven With You" will tug on your heart strings with its dank, laser-melting bass twists while "The Swarm" lulls you into a false sense of tropical security before a Predator bassline leaps out from the swamp and kills you in your tracks. Finally "Torn" takes a yearning, soulful vocal and wraps it around broken glass bass shards in a dangerously seductive way. Immense.

Review: Headz buff up another stone cold classic; A-Sides and jazz/broken beat virtuoso Nathan Haines' first Sci-Clone release from 1997. An outstanding cut of its time, this was hugely influential in the jazzier and liquid side of the genre and blew minds when it landed in the thick of a predominantly heavy and dark year on Headz and in drum & bass in general. "Melt" hits with an array of lilting, splashing textures that give stacks of space for Haines' sax swoons while "OD" digs on a deeper, barbed twist with minor keys that are countered by playful muted sax tones and one of the sprightliest off-beat riffs Headz have ever put out. Phenomenal and still wholly future-focused.

Review: There's much to enjoy on the latest volume in Toy Tonics' ongoing hallucinatory house series, regardless of your psychedelic state of mind. The undoubted standout is Joe Clausell's epic version of Karl Hector and Nicolas Tounga's "Ngunga Yeti Fofa", a feverish, dub-flecked deep house interpretation of a track rich in both African and South American vocals and instrumentation. That said, we're also fans of Vito and Druzzi's "Night Masquerade", where Steve Reich style marimba melodies and fizzing synthesizer solos rise about a jaunty, tropical house groove, while Kapote's "Besamo Fly" is a lolloping, mid-tempo romp full of delay-laden African vocal snippets, jaunty Afro-funk horns and sludgy drumbeats.

Review: Woody... It's been too long! Years after he blessed us with his last single "Souvenirs", Etherwood finally drops some new sounds and they're soul-shivveringly good. Rising and falling with his glistening signature, the pianos and guitars loop with a cadent echo as they loop and lap gently over each other with increasing momentum. An immaculate return to form, we suspect this is building up to something very special indeed.

Review: Distro's momentum continues to increase as he follows the launch of SOBAD's label and a string of killer jams on RKS with two deeper, mystical workouts on Hot Mom. "Lust" rides his signature funky afrobeat with rising harmonic chords and downpitched vocals adding hypnotic effect while "Liquor" switches between sense-tingling wave textures and a hide-tanning ghetto-bouncing riddim that will have you on your knees. This ain't lust... It's love.

Review: Top wobbler and mighty charmer Gramatik is back on his own Lowtemp with the first chapter of the new Re Coil series, a new strain of tunes clearly inspired by sci-fi and the ubiquity of technology. You got six tunes to swell your noggin' good n' propah, kicking off with the suave and laid-back sway of "Future Crypto", which falls neatly into the far-out jazz vibes of Goldilocks Enigma" featuring Anomalie. "Aymo" goes for an Eastern look and feel, dropping some banging bhangra chills, while "Voyager Twins" and "Recovery" opt for more cosmic pastures, and "Halcyon" ties the final knot with a groovy little slice of upbeat nu-boogie for the dancefloor.
