Review: Opening track "Orbit" with its menacing breakbeat and dark atmosphere gets things off to a nice start and there's more of the same later with "Reinforced Texture". The uplifting and soulful vibes of "1.200" could appeal to Planet E or Innervisions fans alike. There's also "Odd Soulz" with its razor sharp bassline and soaring synth leads which give way to a killer drop; peak time tech house done well. "Technicality" gets back into the breakbeat swing of things with dub delay aesthetics and a crunchy, junglised amen for good measure. But "Swathe" is the real highlight here; groovy, snarling acid backed by latin percussion on this impressive house jam.

Review: London's Christian Sibthorpe, known around the UK house circles as A1 Bassline, touches down on Food Music for the first time after a hefty load of EP's on labels such as Dirtybird, Gruuv and Southern Fried, and he appears in the form of a one track gun-slinger in his familiarly dirty and shuffled-out percussive flex. "Odd Soulz" takes its inspiration from different corners of the electronic spectrum, drafting in an electro bassline down below, a techno beat swing, and finishing with a fine layer of Chicago goodness for the soul. A true UK hybrid tune, and a memorable one at that.

Review: Starting out as a digital-only label before blossoming into the distinguished operation it is today, Audiojack's Gruuv label has been host to high-end work from names both familiar and unfamiliar over the years. In celebrating five years of sterling operation, the imprint hits volume three of its festivities with another killer selection of artists on offer. Oxia and Yannick Baudino team up for the plush, steady-rolling tech house funk of "Simple Life", while A1 Bassline brings a bouncy, tom-infused swinger to bear with the addictive "Hold". Tuff City Kids have their unabashed old skool hat on for the hooky chord stabs and breakbeat chops of "Taddler", and Kyodai mixes things up with a broken beat twist on euphoric deep house music.

Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

Review: It's been a while since A1 Bassline last sullied our souls with his low-end shuffles. But he's back with four killer tracks that showcase his deeper side. "Hidden Agenda" is straight out of the late 90s before garage got so dark it morphed into dubstep; featuring shuddering drums and off-beat bass bubbles, it's a great way to show the deep house fakers how it's really done. "Burnt Out Piano Island" jacks with more of a Chicago vibe, all chop-slappy and sample-soaked, while "Outsider" is a brighter, breezier affair with a synth hook so sharp it could catch a shark. "T Moe P" brings the show to a close on another 4/4 UKG vibe; laced with stretchy subs and jitterbug keys, it will have both the bass and deep house communities in a lather. Welcome back A1.

Review: The German label is 12 this year, but as it faces into its teenage life, it retains the same hunger for new music. Get Physical owner DJ T delivers one of the compilation's highlights, a stab-heavy techy take on John Tejada's "Timebomb". Like a slowed down take of Dave Clarke's "Red 2" infused with disco riffs, it sets a high watermark. Nonetheless, T faces stiff opposition from The Martinez Brothers, whose "Issshhh" is all tough percussive volleys and insistent chords, like a tough take on Levon Vincent. Elsewhere, new acts like Siopis and Gorge impress with drum-heavy tools, while old hands Tiefschwarz deliver a spaced out, bleep-heavy version of John Monkman's "Follow Me".

Review: A1 Bassline, aka Croydon's Christian Sibthorpe, has moved on considerably from his ghetto rave beginnings, getting deeper and darker in the process. This latest EP sees him really pursue a retro sound, especially on "Slur" where we are taken to a David Morales Red Zone party in early 90s New York. Up next, "Slingback" is altogether darker: melding tech house with a hint of vintage Detroit techno for an intense and hypnotic trip.
