Review: Between Northern Electronics, Semantica, and Dimensional Exploration, techno deviant Acronym has built himself quite a reputation for conjuring the coldest, most mechanical sort of techno. In case you didn't get it, we think he's a master at the genre, and he's right up there on our list of favourite contemporaries alongside the likes of Abdulla Rashim. This new EP comes courtesy of the fledgling Auxiliary label, and it starts off by setting a cinematic scene through the hollow sounds of "Final Descent", a placid glow of harmonies which transform into an apocalyptic chain of metallic percussion on "Endless Horizon". "Walk Below The Waters" continues this mood, thanks to a jittering artillery of drums and hi-hats that have been glued together by the raucous, minimalistic melodies suspended in the mid-end of the tune, only to be washed-out in the comparatively more diluted and tranquil whirlpool called 'Wandering Aimlessly".

Review: The excellent Dutch label provides the first in a series of vinyl tasters for its upcoming compilation. Field is one of the few imprints that focus mainly on split releases and this record shows just how diverse its view is. Acronym's track begins with spacey ambience before moving into the kind of cold, pointillist techno that Terrence Dixon has pioneered. The two other tracks are tough and functional; Ben Buitendijk's "Colourblind" is a pumping, thundering affair, while Voiski chooses a more subtle approach for "A Star In Your Head". While the rhythm is steely and tough, the use of dubbed out drums and glassy percussion serve to lend it a less abrasive feeling.

Review: If this is what arrives in Tresor's inbox, then they are luckier than most labels. With a focus on tough techno, Demo Tracks 2 showcases some fine new talent. Acronym's "Nabu" is a dark rolling affair, its detailed textures creating a hypnotic cavernous sound. JC's "Chenox" is more direct, with rough, distorted drums fused with a slamming, grainy rhythm primed for the peak time. Neither can compare to Zadig's "Panic". The tempo is far higher, the rhythm more stripped back and visceral, and the arrangement filled with the kind of ferocious percussive bursts that would singe your hair if you stood too close to the speakers.
