Review: Released on Belgian institution R&S Records back in 2016, Alex Smoke's album Love Over Will signalled a new phase of deep artistry for the stalwart Scottish producer. Two years on we get treated to a couple more special remixes (a first volume was released a couple of years ago) courtesy of Dixon & Ame's Innervisions out of Berlin. Italian power duo Tale Of Us deliver another awe-inspiring expression of dancefloor drama with their spellbinding rendition of "Fall Out", while similarly Maeve co-head Mano Le Tough brings on the sonic theatrics and narratives with his rendition of "Dust" - a deep and druggy techno journey into the later hours.

Review: Vakant has been around for almost 15 years, but as its latest compilation shows, the Berlin label shows no signs of getting stale. The Evigt Morker take on Kenneth Scott's "Pranic Lift" is a case in point: based on a skeletal rhythm, glacial synths and beguiling bleeps shine through to create a beautiful deep techno track. Elsewhere, label regular Alex Smoke delivers a teased out groove and spacey chords on "Smivvy" and another familiar face, Tolga Fodan, drops the raw, bleep-heavy techno of "Lone". Most impressive though is the contribution of Anonym, the Detroit producer who has had a long association with the label: "Ghetto Jesus" is a vocal sample-heavy house jacker that is the furthest thing possible from Vakant's minimal roots.

Review: It's that time again: Sven Vath's powerhouse Cocoon Recordings presents the next volume in its alphabetically themed series and brings out all the big guns in typical fashion. There are many highlights, but for our money we'd bet on fellow Frankfurt homeboys Einzelkind, Robin Schulz & Rhythm Factory who team up for the bouncy, late night tech house of "N.2guts", masked Berlin techno impresario Redshape on the brooding dark journey track 'The Choice", Glaswegian legend Alex Smoke with the funky microhouse jam "Porridge" and of course Ovum Recordings man/Philly's finest Josh Wink with the droning peak time acid trip "Buoyantly Grounded". It will take you ecstatic heights like he has done previously.

Review: The Sub Club has played such an important role in the development of UK electronic music that it is surprising it took it so long to have a label arm. Still, Nautilus Rising is testament to being better late than never, and this inaugural release, an all-Scottish affair, covers the kind of soulful house and techno that the 'Subbie' has been long associated with. Alex Smoke's "Straits" revolves around loose tribal drums and ponderous synths, before veering off into an acid-heavy segue. Lord of the Isle's contribution follows a similar trajectory, albeit with a tapestry of brooding bass and synths underscoring the arrangement. Stephen Lopkin represents the new breed of Scottish producer and his "Farewell G41" is all crashing snares and 606 drums. Vince Watson, one of the artists who has been active since the club's inception, rounds out this excellent release with "Subculture Story", a spacey, string-laden affair, atmospheric and melodic, but underpinned by a strong kick.

Review: Scotland's productive Alex Smoke finally to touches down on Optimo's sublime Optimo Trax for a four-track kick to the chest. The dude, or should we say the don, has released countless EPs, all of them on excellent households such as R&S, Soma and even Vakant so it's no real surprise that he'd be landing on yet another quality platform. Four cuts: deep, off-the-wall four-to-the-floor jackers packed with plenty of deranged sonics and atmospheric goodness. To be played loud on a system or on your headphones for a bit of meditative electronic yoga.

Review: Killekill associated imprint Krake have got something pretty special for their debut release - a diverse and fulfilling compilation of some of the most interesting electronic artists of the moment, ranging from techno to IDM and beyond. This is one for you to check out piece by piece but we thought we'd pick out a few tasty ones to get your juices flowing: Pole makes a rare appearance with the beautiful, dubbed-out half-steps of "Wipfel Dub", Cassegrain's "Serpent" is a fast-winding, semi-techno banger complete with one of the nastiest basslines since Surgeon's "Krautrock"; meanwhile Perc comes in with his pulsating techno camaraderie and Lakker's "Darcdub" is just militantly insane. All in all, a fantastic, wide-ranging compilation of new material from some of the darkest minds out there - check the other, lesser known faces too. We're certainly looking forward to the next chapter of Krake...
