Review: Barcelona's Apersonal Music weren't joking when they christened their new rarities compilation Gems From The Vault: Gold Edition. This release is only set to confirm the reputation for quality, with not one duff track to be found. There's seven tracks in total that cover a wide range of ideas - all deep of course - including the bouncing satin-like electro-house of "Malta" by Moodmusic's Sasse, the better-than-lose-yourself-to-dance, funked up New Romantic-isms of "Discofix", the head-trip tech-house vibes of "Omar" by JEEP and the sublime haunted new beat of "Tellem" by Gota Rai & Snres Vegas. Gems indeed!

Review: Following news that Ben Watt no longer intends to put out new music on Buzzin' Fly, the compiling and re-releasing of some of the highlights from the label's back catalogue is timely. This third volume focuses on the high point of the label's output, the golden period from 2007 to 2008. The dominant sound here is trancey and melodic, with synth sweeps combined with sensuous strings and woodwind samples. Manoo & Francois A embody this approach on the windswept "Magnetic", where epic, acid-led hooks build over dubbed out drums, while Pedro Madeira's "Long Shadows" moves from lush strings into an epic break down. Despite this approach, there is still space for classic US house, as the dubby drums of Dennis Ferrer & Steve Martinez' version of Ben Watt's "Lone Cat (Holding On)" demonstrates.

Review: Following outings on Buzzin' Fly and Exun, smiling producer Alexander Maier returns to occasional home Moodmusic with a particularly emotive slice of deep house. In typical Maier fasion, there's plenty to get excited about, from the snappy-but-dubby percussion and bittersweet chords to the breezy production, thick synth bass and gentle pianos. The package is strengthened by two excellent interpretations from Prommer & Barck and Sasse. While the latter adds some lovely late night shuffle, it's the former who really excel, adding some bluesy guitars on an emotion-rich, floor-friendly extenstion. In the words of Shakin' Stevens, "lovely stuff".
