My Ice Baby - (5:09) 123 BPM

Review: It certainly has been Michael Wollenhaupt's year. Since going solo with the Ancient Methods project without Conrad Protzmann, collaborating with Regis as Ugandan Methods and remixing everyone from Powell to Bourbonese Qualk; he's more active than ever and the music speaks for itself. For his latest release on the Hands imprint, Wollenhaupt unleashes more of his epic war techno which collides head on with gothic, industrial and extreme metal aesthetics. "Guided By The Force Of Compassion" has all the hallmarks of his sound: buzzing, distorted melodies, pounding tribal beats and doom-laden atmospherics. "Protection Had To Be Given" and "This All I Could Do" are similar to his Pogo Im Saurebad/Korpersaure '91 remixes for Powell with their oddball compositions stuttering and crashing about the place before some demonic synth roars, executed amazingly well. Finally "My Ice Baby" takes things down a notch but comes across even more sinister as it glitches and scrapes back and forth, dancing in its own filth and static, accompanied by a disturbing, pitch shifted

Review: It's been three years since Ancient Methods' last EP on their own label, with the duo in the meantime becoming a solo project. The now mysterious solitary act delivers a four-track EP entitled Seventh Seal, which in comparison to their earlier output, sees Ancient Methods ease up on the ear-serrating sonics that first garnered them the attention of hardened techno lovers. It does however still pack the industrial weight and displays of menacing grooves the project is known for, most notably "Knights & Bishops". Following a similar chess themed motif, the percussion of "Kings & Pawns" swings and scrapes like a medieval weapon, while church hall chants and machine gun drum patters play major roles in "When All Is Said & Done" and "Castling Becomes Inevitable".

Review: Tommy Four Seven's eponymous imprint returns with more bleak and dystopian techno tools of industrial strength grade. Featuring the always ferocious Ancient Methods and the wonky drones of "System", Berlin duo Oake hypnotise you into submission as always with their esoteric imaginary soundtrack entitled "Anaxamines" before Italian producer VSK delivers the EPs finest moment on the rather Surgeon sounding broken techno stomper "Breaking Symmetry". The man himself T47 closes this fine EP out with the shredding body bash of "Dromod" that's mangled up amongst metallic textures, grinding sub bass and generous servings of clipped distortion; business as usual!

Review: When it comes to techno, can it get any more serious than a collaboration between Ancient Methods and Orphx released on rock hard Belgian label Token? Well yes, as soon as you hear the music is does. "Age Of Iron" sounds like the sub-aqueous dub of Rich Oddie exchanging blows with an armoury of Ancient Methods percussion, while "Degenerate" is proper, rigid and heads down techno funnelled through a tubular filter. "Kali" features the same type of rolling rhythm, stop-start loops as what's heard throughout Regis' early work, only the frequency spectrums are sculpted to form a musical production, even though this is industrial techno, while "Seven Signs" croaks, clinks, and jangles like shackles scraping against concrete, sounding like something designed for dungeon clubbing - and, we might add, it's worth powering through the sonic malevolence for the drum breakdown alone.

Review: Delusions go against the grain with the third Ballistic release. Unlike the majority of tunnelling techno, this is harsh and visceral, with screeching riffs and concrete beats laying the bassis for "Death Tree". Needless to say, Ancient Methods deliver an intense take on "Tree", with blasts of dark noise and panel-beating riffs complementing an upfront but curiously supple metallic rhythm. "Illusions" is more esoteric, as eerie soundscapes and a man speaking in German about 'identity' float in over austere broken beats. Fanon Flowers's take on "Illusions" is less upfront than usual, with heavy claps and a dubby bassline supporting a lurching rhythm.

Review: Eschaton are back everyone: look out. The infamous collaboration between Ancient Methods and Orphx have decided to reign in terror once more on Belgian imprint Token so be prepared: this one is a one way ticket to hell and back! Starting out with the body bashing broken beat assault of "Deus Irae", they then serve up the slow burning post-apocalyptic anthem "Those Who Obey". "Answer My Prayer" definitely sounds more like Michael Wollenhaupt than anyone else: this is techno-doomcore like only he can create. Finally the hellish drone of "No Other Gods Before Me" ensures one seriously white knuckled duvet ride for you tonight!
