I'm Not Afraid (The Hacker remix) - (5:45) 120 BPM
Review: "Afraid" is taken from Clarke's recent Desecration of Desire album, and in these remixers' hands pushes his music back towards the dance floor. While the seminal UK artist had embraced post-punk, ebm and even some darkly satisfying pop on his most recent long player, Surgeon's reshape of "Afraid" is a firing, slightly discordant peak time banger. It's exactly the kind of noisy, abrasive techno that Clarke's own thrilling, cut-up DJ sets consist of. The Hacker meanwhile, chooses a different route. Chopping up Anika's vocals, he conjures up menacing tones around Keith Tenniswood's original, muddy post-punk bass to create a powerful, electro-techno workout.
