Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it with such a killer tracklisting as Zehn. Across the 30 tracks (count 'em!) you get a who's who of Berghain and Panorama Bar associates delivering a quite outstanding selection of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: Answer Code Request's "Calm Down" sees the German artist go back to doing what he does best; the beats are sparse and filed with short breaks, while the sonics circling above them exude that familiar sci-fi feel. "Dust 0.2" is more of a minimal techno piece - pads and effects still firmly in place - while "Modal" flickers its strain of distortion over lo-fi acid bleeps, and "Feel (Rework)" is all about the tune's cascading synths and slow-morphing low-ends. Quality gear, as expected.

Review: The brilliant Answer Code Request follows releases for his own imprint and Marcel Dettmann's MDR label to make his Ostgut Ton debut with the Breathe EP, which delivers three cuts of his individual brand of weighty, breakbeat-inspired techno. Each of the three tracks sees him in particularly ravey form; "The 4th Verdict" combines a chugging synth line with minimal Mills-inspired percussion, while "Ghostes" offers a suitably spectral vision of club techno in its cavernous chords and heavy breakbeat rhythms. The title track however must be his most euphoric to date combining headspinning chords with taut drums - another killer from ACR.

Review: Fresh from mixing the latest instalment of Fabric's mix series, Panorama Bar resident Steffi launches a new sub-label, Dolly Deluxe. Many of the tracks that feature on Fabric 94 also appear across the first four EPs on this offshoot. The second Dollydeluxe release boasts an atmospheric feeling, but with a dance floor bias. This is evident on Answer Code Request's stirring break beat opener, "Forking Path" and Voiski's brooding acid stepper, "Sound of Distance". Dexter, one of Steffi's closest peers, opts for a stern, steely electro approach on "66", while 214, fresh from his release on Lunar Disko, moves back towards ethereal sounds with the widescreen synths and ERP-style bass of "Sound Moments".

Review: All hail Dettmann! Having included a veritable swathe of unreleased material from artists affiliated with his label on the excellent Fabric 77 earlier this year, Marcel Dettmann has done the right thing and issued the majority across two EPs. As is the case when granted the chance to own these cuts, it's interesting to see if they retain the power and intensity they conveyed when utilised by Dettmann within the context of the mix CD. In the case of "Transit" and "BB 1.0" from Answer Code Request and Norman Nodge respectively, that's a resounding yes! The latter's production is a particularly potent slab of lysergic sonic dementia that the more adventurous selectors will be playing for years to come. Dettman's A&R skills are on full display with cuts from Stefan 'Kryptic Universe' Schindler's new Lockermatik project and newcomer Ryan James Ford.

Review: While Berlin's Answer Code Request certainly comes from a techno mentality, the producer has shifted his focus to what Shed, and the rest of his compatriots, have eventually gravitated towards. This new LP for the capital's Ostgut Ton label, is more bass than tech, and we think that this is extremely well-suited to the man's loose, freeform take on German dance music. In fact, this is more UK than anything, with the majority of these tunes breaking the all-too-predictable 4/4 trance for something much more in line with the likes of Hessle Audio or Night Slugs. However, this is very much an Answer Code Request flex, with what undertones of German industrialism seeping their way through the percussion and structure of the grooves. What a corker - recommended!

Review: As underground venues and spaces struggle to overcome the financial pressures exacted by coronavirus, many artists are responding to support them. In_vurt is a case in point; issued on Cassegrain's label, it sees a multitude of techno producers who have played at Vurt contribute tracks, with the proceeds of sales helping the Seoul venue. It's an impressive, 28-track collection, and features some of underground techno's most respected artists, including Answer Code Request, who drops the dreamy, breakbeat-led "No Comply 180", Artefakt's dubbed out tunnelling "Solstice" and the shimmering rhythms on BNJMN's "Overstated". These sit alongside more experimental tracks like Cio D'Or's glitchy "Permanent Key" and the droning, expansive "Further Movements Into Unknown Territories" from Peter Van Hoesen.
