Review: What a productive and satisfying time it is to be an Apehx Twin fan. Previously only available as a bonus track for the Japanese edition of his recent album Syro, "MARCHROMT30a Edit 2b 96" is more than worthy of a standalone release and so Warp have decided to issue it packaged with another two tunes. The lead track is a marvelous ballad of warm, crunchy production flair and heart wrenching melody, packed full of dynamic twists and playful fills. "XMAS_EVET1 N" follows in a similar Syro-compatible path of boogie-tastic synth lines, plaintive pads and crisp, funky drums. "MARCHROMT38 Fast" presents an alternative mix of the title track that simply ups the pace, but keeps everything else mighty similar.
Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure
Review: Just four months after the release of the long-awaited Syro, Richard D. James has dropped an EP of all-new material, more than making up for his 13 years of radio silence. Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments Pt 2 is an album comprised of music that's just that, making for one of the most unique collection of Aphex Twin tracks of James's entire career. From intricate piano miniatures to almost jazz-inspired drum rhythms, it's essential listening for those willing to delve deep into the strange sonic world of the producer.
Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the "Digeridoo" era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.
Review: Has it been thirty years already? This celebratory R&S Records compilation doesn't just bring with it the nostalgic charm of tracks by names we shouldn't forget (Capricorn, Jam & Spoon, Second Phase and Mundo Muzique) and tracks we couldn't forget (Outlander's "Vamp" and Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash"), it also brings with it contemporary R&S classics like Tessela's "Nancy's Pantry", "Airglow Fires" by Lone, Vondelpark's indie-laced "California Analogue Dream" and Blawan's "Shader". 30 Years Of R&S Records takes the listener down memory lane, while lighting a path for what will hopefully be another 30 years.

Review: For all you folks out there in radio land Warp Records is on the air with this WXAXRXP compilation pulling together an assortment of Warp artists playing Warp music on the radio. Whether it be earlier John Peel sessions or this June's WXAXRXP x NTS weekender, the tracks here provide a digital taster of what's inside a huge 10x12" boxset - designed by Michael Oswell with photography by Synchrodogs (maybe that means something to some of you). The essential who's who of Warp artists make their way to this digital compilation, with LFO signing in for a trippy piece of bleep funk alongside something mahogany and soulful from Flying Lotus, with classic strands of BOC melancholia not failing to miss out. Mount Kimbie's recent "You Look Certain (I'm Not So Sure)" feat Andrea Balency at this year's WXAXRXP Session is a highlight also next to Seelfeel's "Vex" recorded for a Peel Session back in the day.
Review: On the latest instalment of the long-running DJ-Kicks series, Peggy Gou paints a vivid picture. It starts with the widescreen ambience of Space Time Continuum's 1993 debut, "Fluresence", before moving into her own, cosmic "Hungboo" and the niggling acid of Pearson Sound's "Earwig", a contemporary cousin to Plastikman's Musik. There are other endearing oddities here, such as Andrew Weatherall's seductive house version of Sly & Lovechild's "The World According To..." and the raw drums of Kyle Hall's "Flemmenup". Gou has also included a Detroit techno classic, Psyche's "Crackdown", but balances this out with new, unreleased tracks from I:Cube - "Cassette Jam 1993" sees the maverick French producer deliver a frazzled, hazy affair - and Hiver's pulsating, acid-flecked "Pert".
