Review: Vandal's Modern Soul series of LPs has for a long time been a breeding ground for a wide variety of drum & bass, including formative tracks from Shield, Monty and others. This time around it's number five and the quality continues, kicking things off with a gorgeously light liquid number from Phase and Lameduza that brings old school vibes right to the forefront. Tech wizard Rizzle is known for his liquid depth too as 'Levitate' has a sumptuously mystical back end that falls and falls, whilst fellow minimal heads Invadhertz equally try their hand at wispy pads and far-off vocal samples. Monty makes an appearance, as does Amoss, SKS and Arcatype. A tour de-force.

Review: Sun & Bass chief ARPXP doesn't release anywhere near as much as he should. But when he does.... Oh boy. "Fade Away"is Call To Mind era Commix style track.... Fava provides the soul but it's pinned by icy and chiselled precision production. "Fifth Step" is jazz in its nature as the linger pianos roam with a hazy looseness. "Dancers Of The Stars" tips a wry nod to Doc Scott with its Beltram bass thrusting with mid 90s edge. Finally, "Endless Summer". Check its breezy evocative textures and the name will make complete sense. Balmy army.

Review: This little beauty is a reminder of what gorgeous things lie just out of view of the norm. Arp XP has been creating weighty, but magical drum and bass for a good few years now. "Good Old Days" shows just how finessed his already clean and sophisticated sound has become, working perfectly in sync with HLZ to create a modern Med masterpiece. HLZ's solo effort "Gaia" punches in some dark minimalism lightened by passing ripples of melody, later ripping apart the peace with a terrorising bassline. ArpXP returns for "Makes Me Wonder" with Brazilian player Nitri, who's forsaken the bongos for real, own-to-earth Metalheadz old-school. We like. We like a lot.
