Review: Some fine festive fare here from the fast-rising DOBRO imprint, who've used the season of goodwill as an excuse to deliver another fine, 16-rack compilation of previously unreleased material. Kicking off with the emotive, shuffling deep house loveliness of Buzz Compass's 'Hartbit', the collection gleefully skips between sample-rich disco-house (Mutenoise, Leiba, Hotmood), quirky Latin house (Babak, Kostenko Brothers), squelchy late-80s techno revivalism (SIRS and Lovebirds), nu-boogie (Scruscru with label boss Iner), wall-of-sound deep house positivity (Selva, the jaunty vintage late '80s 'garage-house' vibes of Sun Rhythms) and hazy, sunrise-ready wonder (Kerrinis and TonyZzz). Brilliantly programmed, it's a fine compilation of positive, ear-pleasing excellence.
Review: If the purpose of a label's debut release is to set its stall out, then Soviett has done a terrific job with this first multi-artist EP. It boasts a quartet of nu-disco cuts from (mostly) Russian artists. Ivan Starvez's "Love Goes On" sets the tone, wrapping wonderfully cheery synthesizer melodies and electronic marimba sounds around a dreamy, Italo-influenced nu-disco groove. Ksky goes a little darker and misty-eyed on the spine-tingling throb of "The Wave", while Cream Soda's spiraling "Kto Y" underpins samples from a sparkling Eastern European disco classic with heavy new house beats. Finally, Babak channels the spirit of Midnight Magic's modern NYC disco classic "Beam Me Up" on the low-slung and intoxicating "Never Get Back".
