Review: UK label Hot Gorilla reach the terrible twos and celebrate with a 10-track compilation that's packed with fine contemporary disco, funk, soul and boogie vibes. If you're looking for highlights, then Havana Hustlers' opener rocks a b-line that somehow manages to recall both 'Lovely Day' and 'Boogie Nights', Fray Bentos makes great use of a classic Afrika Bambaataa sample on 'Stormy Nights', while Andy Buchan's 'The House That Funk Built' plunders Aretha to equally powerful effect and Solazz's 'Blaze The Party' is a boogie-tastic delight. But there are six more quality jams where those came from, from Even Funkier's Patrice Rushen-biting 'Those Were The Times' to the jazz-funk inflections of Shalvoy's 'Beautiful2Strangers'.

Review: Happy eighth birthday to Hot Digits, who are celebrating their anniversary with this superb collection of contemporary disco, funk and boogie slammers. With a whopping 30 tracks to choose from there's obviously no room here to go into them all one-by-one, but with cuts ranging from the smooth jazz-funk of 'George's Groove' to the unabashed filter disco euphoria of 'Cuz I'm Naked', and from the fat-ass slap bass of 'We're Gettin' In' to cheeky Loleatta-referencing disco-houser 'Dub Sensation', there's evidence a-plenty here, should any be required, that Hot Digits do this kind of tackle better than most.

Review: Italian producer Belabouche, whose work has appeared on such labels as Paper Disco, Midnight Riot and Rebel Hearts, comes to Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint with two contrasting cuts here. 'A Humble Girl' places a high-pitched, quite poppy female vocal atop a rolling, bass-y disco backdrop, with lots of intricate top-end percussion and vaguely tropical undertones. It's the more radio-friendly of the two tracks, and not without its charms for sure, but if you're looking for something a lil' rawer, dirtier and funkier then don't worry - 'Funky Fox' has you covered with its phat-ass b-line and early 80s-style chant vocal.

Review: Slightly Transformed bring us the latest installment in their occasional compilation series, which follows on from 'Summer Numbers 2019' and 'Summer Numbers 2020'. Regular visitors to this page should need no introduction to the respected London-based label, and with the album packing a whopping 26 tracks, there's certainly no space to give you a full blow-by-blow rundown: suffice to say that whether you're a fan of sparkling boogie nouveau, sumptuous string-drenched disco, deep 'n' groovy house, headnoddin' Balearica or any combination thereof, this is a comp you're gonna want to check for. Standouts for yours truly include Kiosko 33's Chuck Roberts-biting 'Theory Of House' and Kristoff MX's 'Funk With Me', but you'll find your own I'm sure...

Review: Since launching in 2017, Toulon-based imprint Act of Sedition has become renowned for the quality of its re-edit releases, many of which appear on rarely seen seven-inch "double-packs". This time they're trying something a little different by gathering together a swathe of previously unheard reworks on a must-check digital compilation. It's a fine set that touches on a number of interconnected styles and sounds, from loved-up Balearic nu-disco (Nu Pilgrims "Soul Shadow (Withers Shakedown)") and tooled-up Afro-disco heaviness (Belabouche's bouncy "Hey Africa"), to rushing revisions of stone cold disco classics (Monsieur Von Pratt's "Why", Reece Johnson's stomping "Piece of Mind") and head-nodding, toe-tapping soul (Mr Doris's "Hercules").

Review: Katakana Edits first compilation, 2017's "Crate Diggin", was an epic collection of high-grade re-edits, mash-ups and reworks packed to the rafters with tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. This belated follow-up is even more epic, with the popular label squeezing in no less than 50 tracks that variously touch on riotous disco-funk, dub disco, new wave, disco-rock, deep funk, Afro-boogie, swamp funk, Latin beats, boogie, pitched-down chuggers, boogaloo, hip-hop and everything in between. You'd expect that standard to be high - it is a "best of" collection after all - and it is. If you need an instant armoury of scintillating club cuts, look no further.
