Review: The Sound Of Benny EP Running Back Germany
It can be tricky keeping up with the many aliases of Benny Rodrigues Alves Fortes Monteiro, a Rotterdam-based producer whose output tends towards the prolific. Happily, Gerd Janson is here to help, bringing four of his pseudonyms together on one must-have EP. Rodrigues first dons the Younger Rebinds alias to deliver arpeggio-driven Italo-acid chugger "Tim's Symphony", before changing into his ROD clothes for "MOOG", a mind-altering chunk of late night techno psychedelia. Under his given name you'll find "Sad Piano", a fluid and stripped back piano house workout, while Obob Akim cut "Hausbreak" sees him brilliantly wrap old school U.S garage synth stabs and rising Italo-disco electronics around a punchy, electro style breakbeat.

Review: It's hard to believe that Loco Dice's label has been around for so long - or more surprisingly that it covers so much ground. While much of the label's focus remains on toolish, tribal house, 5 Years also covers deep, chiming house, audible on Yaya's "Our Connection" and the driving, vocal-filled groove of Dice's own "Lolopopinho". Of the tribal-styled tracks, the ones that stand out most are the ponderous vocals of Basti Grub's "Drunk & High" and the intoxicating chants of Francisco Allendes' "Platonic Solid". Yet neither can compare to the acid-filled, rolling snares of Horatio's "How Much 909 Can You Take", which sounds like LFO vs FUSE's "Loop" on acid.

Review: Benny Rodrigues is a diverse talent and on this debut release for Loco Dice's label, he shows why he is so highly regarded. "Funky Drummer" starts the release off with heavy, rooling drums and a filtered vocal, a near perfect DJ tool. "Hit the Bass Jack" is of a similar disposition but faster and containing an insistent chord stab that acts as the central hook. On "Momentum", Rodrigues shows a more sensual side to his production with a walking funk bassline and female vocal samples prevailing. It's but a short interlude and soon afterwards he's dropping acid-filled bombs - "Too Much Information" - and the effective cut-ups of "Curry's".

I Like Acid EP
I Like Acid (original mix) - (5:33) 128 BPM Hot
Choices (original mix) - (6:54) 130 BPM
I Like Acid (Sterac aka Steve Rachmad remix) - (7:11) 126 BPM
I Like Acid (Mike Dehnert remix) - (6:11) 125 BPM
Review: Given the glut of Chicago-inspired tracks in circulation, Rodrigues isn't the only one who loves the 303, but this release pushes the sound on a few more steps. The title track deploys gurgling acid lines, but does so to the backdrop of a slamming metallic rhythm track, while Steve Rachmad's remix adds ghostly chords and crashing percussion. Berlin producer Mike Dehnert also provides an interpretation, which pushes the original version to a place where evil sirens and visceral riffs prevail. Meanwhile Rodrigues's own "Choices" dispenses entirely with acid and focuses instead on a slamming, metallic club groove populated by walls of white noise and minimal rhythms.
