Bladerunner

There are very good reasons why Bladerunner is one of the biggest and most respected names in jungle and drum 'n' bass.

It's not just the finely-honed production skills or his monumental deejay sets. It's not just the modest and humble personality that's endeared him to legions of supporters worldwide. At the core of Bladerunner's rise has been true, heartfelt authenticity born from a lifelong connection to the music's foundations. And it shows in every tune and every blend.

Discovering jungle as a teenager in the mid-nineties, it was inevitable that he would graduate from the dancefloor to the stage and take an active role in the scene. After all, he had the example of his dad – reggae artist and pioneering Radio 1 deejay The Man Ezeke – and he was based in East Anglia, which was quickly becoming a nexus for DnB talent. It didn't take long before the young Bladerunner learned his craft so well he could remake his favourite jungle classics from just the raw samples. That level of dedication would define his career.

Over recent years, a succession of releases on labels like Dread, Critical, V, Born on Road, Souped Up, Technique and many more prestigious imprints have cemented his influence on the scene. A quick glance at his history shows that Bladerunner has never needed to jump on the latest bandwagon to stay relevant. He's usually been the one driving it.

He kept his foundation influences front and centre even before the more recent jungle renaissance, as well as helping to innovate and popularise the much-imitated sub-genre/not sub-genre of “rollers”. Without compromising his style, Bladerunner has managed to maintain critical credibility while also building mass appeal and a huge fanbase. That's not a balancing act many can pull off, but this man is up to the challenge.

No wonder he's been a regular fixture at some of the biggest events on the DnB calendar. The likes of Boomtown, Glastonbury, Hospitality, and many other huge festivals worldwide have all received the Bladerunner treatment. Whatever the venue, from underground raves to international main stages, he's proven that he's equipped and ready to tear the roof off. The combo of his rolling, energetic selection style, his ammo crate of dubs and his immaculate blends make every set something special.

This is a drum 'n' bass artist with real junglist credentials and an unquenchable passion for the music. And, despite his quiet humility, those characteristics have propelled him to the very top of the industry, giving us all the satisfaction of seeing true talent getting the recognition it deserves. But, even with all his achievements so far, it's clear from his prolific output and rammed booking diary that he has a lot more to show us.

So, get ready for the next chapter of the Bladerunner story. It's going to be worth watching.

Various
Brian Brainstorm - "No Ordinary Sound" (Aries remix) - (3:57) 58 BPM
Review: Kleu takes charge of the latest Welcome To The Jungle compilation with an explosive collection of tracks that are sure to set any dancefloor alight. With over 50 hand-picked drum and bass selections from top artists such as Conrad Subs, Benny Page, Veak, Gold Dubs, Bladerunner, and the Jungle Cakes catalogue, as well as Kleu's own unreleased tracks, this album is a must-have for any fan of the genre. Notable tracks include the hard-hitting 'Dragon Soop', a tribute to the popular off-license drink with punchy drums, airy pads, and a fierce bassline, the feel-good rave anthem 'Got The Feeling' featuring bouncy piano melodies and catchy vocal samples, and the energetic 'Shake Ya Body Like Dis' with its hyped-up vocals, heavy bass hits, and weighty low end. Kleu's selection is flawless and guaranteed to keep the ravers happy. Don't miss out on adding Welcome To The Jungle to your collection!

Review: Destination NYC: Liondub International look back over their last year of releases with this almighty 25 track collection of highlights. As always with Liondub's broad and highly international church, the vibes go the full flex from classic dancehall jungle to epic jump-up tear-ups. Highlights include Bladerunner's savage Amen assault 'Jungle Strike', the big vocal licks and even big bassline snorts of JNGL's remix 'Worldwide' and Original Sin's absolutely despicable twist on the Riko Dan-front 'War Ting'. And that's just the tip of this junglistic iceberg. Don't sleep on this one!

Review: Reaching out to the massive! Liondub and good friend Marcus Visionary curate another absolutely slamming collection of upfront bubblers and blazers from a whole range of on-point talents for the fifth volume of their Jungle To The World series. Every single track is a highlight here as we slide and glide from vibe to vibe. Bladerunner's 'Jungle Strike' is the perfect intro that sucks us deep into action with pure energy while elsewhere other cuts like the VIP of Jayline's 'The Lion' go full-on elephant bass, Conrad Subs goes classical jungle with the chops, cuts and warping bass notes of 'Call It Love' and Teej gets militant with his breaks on his remix of SuM's 'Disorder'. World beating junglism.

Review: 25 years in the game! The world's longest-standing D&B platform continues to represent drum & bass culture in the best and most upfront way possible with this incredible collection of tracks from right across the whole scene. Loaded with legends and new generation cats alike, with all ages and styles in between, the album ranges from the likes of Bukem's first release in many years - 'Flip The Narrative' to J Majik's hardcore-heaving 'Blake' by way of Bcee & Dynamite's 'Run', A.M.C's carnivalesque 'Brazil' and Visages & Kyrist's squelchy, dark funk piece 'Mirai'. These are just some of the many, many highlights on offer. With names like Particle, Digital & Charla Green, Ben Snow, Athena, Trex and so many more, this is a fantastic way to celebrate a quarter of a century in the game. Here's to the next 25 years.

Review: The original pioneer MC Navigator returns to last summer's beautiful reggae lick 'Ghetto Strugglaz Lullaby' with two rubs from a fellow don and jungle wizard Bladerunner. Ramping up the original's warm but poignant feels and maintaining Navi's instantly distinctive voice, the Kings Of The Rollers member brings his signature honeyed subs and those brisk, super-clean breaks to the mix and turns it into the perfect summertime D&B weapon. The struggles are real.

Bou - "Music Takes Me Higher" (original mix) - (3:51) 57 BPM
Review: Jungle Cakes always tend to put out music that rests on the foundations of UK underground, the cross-over influences of soul, reggae, jungle and D&B. it's always a fresh sound and it always brings up connotations of Boomtown, free parties and sunny afternoons. This is a monster album curated by Aries and Kelvin 373, who have taken tracks both old and new to form a banging compilation. Bou nails it on 'Music Takes Me Higher', a rustic revisit to classic jungle sounds; Aries and Nicky Blackmarket roll things out in a tight way on 'Champion'; and Chimpo slams the brakes on 'DidDieDoThat'. We don't know the answer to that, but we do know this is fat. Big ups.

Review: Bryan Gee and V Recordings do not mess around. They never have in the past, they're certainly not right now in the present and judging by this highly anticipated Future album, they're going to mess around any time ahead. 25 tracks from some of the biggest, best and baddest names in D&B (Dillina, Serum, Benny L, Paul T & Edward Oberon, Roni Size, DJ Marky, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Bladerunner, Saxxon, the list goes on) this one's been a long, long, long time coming... And it's been well worth the wait. From L-Sides massive remixes of Dillinja and Krust to Need For Mirrors super-revved "Lambo" to Benny L's incredible remix of "Days", this sums up why Bryan and his label are as influential and respected in the game as they are today. Don't mess around.

Review: Following the likes of Ray Keith, Nicky Blackmarket, General Levy and many artists of high don calibre, Dope Ammo and DJ Hybrid are the next to take the controls as Jungle Cakes' Welcome To The Jungle series. As always, the selection digs deep across the board to include classics, absolute bangers that have been criminally forgotten and no less than 10 exclusives made strictly for this album. From the sun-kissed soul and key-tickling evangelist jam "Salvation" to the absolute rave carnage of "What's Going Down", the boys have gone in on this collection maintaining its still spotless reputation as one of the most consistent and prolific mix series available in the genre. Pay close attention to the Jukebox Jungle track, too. This needs your loving.

Running his gully gamut from emotional to electrical to energetical, everything you could possibly need from a Bladerunner EP is right here... The subtle euphoria and piano-touched emotion of "All My Love", the total skin melting sizzles and bassline burns of "Intensity" and the techno-like insistency and dynamism of "Breathe" are just three of many highlights here.

Driving Force - (4:38) 58 BPM
Review: Bladerunner - one of the members of 2018's breakout act Kings of the Rollers - is back on his very own Hi Resolution imprint for a slammer of a four-tracker. His wicked single 'Rolling Fire' is given the VIP treatment in spectacular fashion with a modulating, expansive bass that just flows and flows. The title track is another absolute hitter, those classic Bladerunner head-nodding drums underpinning a viciously long bassline that curls round to hit you in the face. 'Driving Force' is more bass excellence except its drawn out over a stuttering jungle break, while 'Energy Weapon' is exactly that, a reverberating mash of low-frequency energy - what a weapon. Bladerunner is back.

Kursiva & Badweed - "My Sound" (feat Deanie Rankin) - (4:56) 58 BPM
Review: Run Tingz are a Bristol based imprint that seek to project the Bristolian sound all across the U.K. That sound is a hypnotic blend of ragga influences, jungle vibes and rolling, bassy tones of the type that blow up Bristol dancefloors on an almost daily basis. For their Best of 2018 album they've rolled out the big guns for a fat compilation featuring the likes of Bladerunner, Kursiva, Dossa and Brian Brainstorm so you know it's going to be good. 'Sound Killer' by Bladerunner is typical of this; funky, upbeat ragga sampling and sick vocals from Fuchaman with an underpinning of junglist vibes and pulsing basslines. The rest of the album is just as good - go cop it.

Power Moves
Bulldozer - (4:30) 58 BPM
Review: Roller King and all-round G Bladerunner returns on his own Hi Resolution imprint with four more fat slammers. "Power Up" is as close to neuro as you'll find the London artist. All rasping and waspish, it's a high voltage scenario from the slippery breaks to the sinewy reese. "The Crazy Dragon" flips the coin for a riffier jam where the bassline provides a strong melodic bullishness to the blend. "Electric Dreams" is the naughtiest monster of the set with its savage distorted reverse bass warps and wry 2000s-era BC stabs. Last but not least "Bulldozer" brings the curtains down with more of a junglised break and a no-nonsense 1.21 gigawatt bass sizzle. Power moves by name, killer moves by nature.

Review: Selector! Jungle Cakes' Welcome To The Jungle series welcomes a bonafide legend to the controls: Ray Keith. Digging deep across the board he's put together over 40 killer tracks from an obscene rollcall: Serum, Vital, Dillinja, Bladerunner, Margaman, T>I, DJ Hybrid, Turno, Filthy Habits, Ed Solo, Deekline and many many more artists are responsible for the savage soul and badman bounce on offer as we're rattled and shaken from pillar to post. From the naughty ragga skanks and turbo reverse bass lashes of Deekline & Ed Solo's "Hot This Year" to Ray's very own seminal "Chopper" via Bladerunner's evergreen breezer "Jungle Jungle" via two mixes and 10 FX tools, this is one of Jungle Cakes' tastiest ever projects to date. No stone unturned, no shoe unthrown; from long-demanded VIPs such as Emperor's sharp update on "Infrasound" and Mefjus's VIP of "Disrupted" come well-deserved re-ups of classics such as Binga's fuzzy take on Serum & Bladerunner's "Who Jah Bless", Benny L's gut-troubling twist of Enei's "Mosquito" and a crucial twist of Rockwell's breakthrough gamechanger "Underpass" from none other than Perez. "Forever" sets the pace with the classic rolling breaks and psychedelic synth tendrils wafting through the soundscape, "Sub Lo" strips things right back to the bare bones with clapping snares and a grainy one-note bass wobbles while "High Pressure" scorches with a high voltage space-bound bassline and a heads-down tunnelling groove. Review: Given the glowing reception to last year's Jungle To The World compilation, it makes for no surprise that Liondub have called on the curatorial skills of all-round junglist scholar, Marcus Visionary, to compile a second volume. The blend of legends and innovators alike is present once more, as Visionary pulls together 14 tracks from an all-star cast of producers renowned for pushing forth the reggae-infused jungle sound. Naturally the highlights come thick and fast, but Bladerunner's fierce "Guidance Dub" and Marcus Visionary's own collab with iconic reggae vocalist Jonny Osbourne, "Lend Me", stand out. Some killer sampling of the classic "Armagideon Time" abounds in this latter cut. E for essential!

Consistently rolling out timeless treats that remind us how futuristic D&B will always sound in the right hands, here we find him returning to his burgeoning label Hi Resolution with two more straight-up bangers. "Fire From The Sky" twists up about four different bass textures and pours them over you one by one. Review: Hot off Randall's Mac 2 label, Pieces is a ludicrous collection of behemoth tunes found, remixed or simply well-placed in no particular order. Why? Because he's good to us like that. Featuring a stellar line-up of OGs and freshly hooked-up newcomers, this is 18 tracks of pure drum and bass energy ready to make a mess of your cochlea. Special mentions for the DRamatic remix of Lenni Dee Ice's "We Are IE" and Trex's massive stomper "Sudden Impact" which should currently be tearing up the dancefloor in your nearest darkened warehouse with a soundsystem. Instant purchase.

Spirit/Denial - "Lost" - (5:16) 58 BPM
Review: V Recordings sister label Chronic steps up to give us volume 2 of their Rollers series, featuring 16 exclusive tracks from the freshest talent and the most exciting names currently holding down the underground scene. The label was reborn in 2013 with the mantra of presenting the world with no frills dance floor Drum and Bass and judging from this latest offering they certainly seem to be fulfilling their mission. From the rolling jungle sounds of Bladerunner's epic "Lock Off VIP" to the distorted growls of Command Strange's "Riots" if you are looking to get the dance floor bouncing, then Chronic have you covered.
