Review: For years one of the leading lights in trance, Armada now turns its focus to tech house. It's no surprise that some of the tracks selected for this compilation have a big room, epic flavour. This is audible on the laser-tunnel bass of Maceo Plex's "Conjure Drama" and Booka Shade's chart-threatening "Crossing Borders", which features Fritz Kalkbrenner's monotone vocals. However, this compilation also provides some unexpected pleasures, including the tribal house of Tom Flynn's "Hoochie", which features a guest slot from the sadly deceased Detroit producer Aaron Carl and the insane jack and vocal snippets of Schumacher and Daniele Petronelli's "Bounce".

Review: It has been quite a year for the Toolroom institution. Celebrating their 15th birthday last year, they weren't ones to rest on their laurels, instead going full steam ahead with a bunch of genre defining compilations this year. But most importantly they have been instrumental in the comeback of funky house after a 20 year dormancy, with killer releases by the likes of Weiss, Cashio and boss man Mark Knight himself. Add to that one banging party at Chicago Social Club for Amsterdam Dance Event and it's evident that these guys are proper 24 hour party people. With a glorious year sadly coming to an end, celebrate a wonderful one that was on Best Of Toolroom 2019 with highlights not limited to: the rework of the Cevin Fisher classic "Freaks Come Out" by Jack Back, Hannah Wants & Kevin Knapp's deep down and dirty "Call Me" (extended mix), UK heroes Alan Fitzpatrick & Wheats delivering the certified banger "M27" and New York legend Todd Terry teaming up with Tuff London on "Psychodrama" featuring Jasmien Nanhekhan. If that was not enough, ascendant producer Maxinne delivers two mixes compiling all the tracks: one smooth House mix followed by a thumping Tech House mix.

Review: With Ibiza's extended summer season almost upon us, Toolroom has served up a suitably epic collection of cuts that it expects to be big on the White Isle this summer. Label boss Mark Knight has provided a trio of DJ mixes ("Poolside", "Club" and "Afterclub") and the unmixed tracks included all fit into these loose categories. There's not enough room to list all of the highlights, but we've been enjoying the funk-fuelled disco-house rush of Illyus and Barrientos' "The One", the sleazy, bass-heavy bounce of Max Chapman's "Steppa", the acid-powered tech-house-jack of Del-30's "Gravity" and the weighty, mind-altering thump of "Low End Theory" by Eli Brown.

Review: As you'd expect, given the label's runaway success over the past few years, there are plenty of very familiar cuts on this 52-track 'best of' from the all-conquering Toolroom, including GotSome's tribal smash 'Nomad Chat', label boss Mark Knight's infuriatingly catchy, flute-driven Shovell collab 'Selecao', Mendo's sample-heavy G-houser 'Mooving' and CamelPhat's remix of Fatboy Slim. But there are plenty of less heavily rinsed gems on offer too, and with tracks from the likes of D.Ramirez, Leftwing & Kody, Dosem, DJ S.K.T and Dale Howard plus reworks of Sterling Void and Todd Terry classics, it's a no-brainer for tech-house jocks on a budget.

Review: The Berlin-based duo Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier aka Booka Shade return to Bedrock to unveil their second EP for John Digweed's imprint. Following up last year's Rosebud EP., the Get Physical staples and Blauefield Music bosses open this new EP with the moody yet evocative dancefloor drama of "Understanding" complimented by some passionate female vocals. This is followed by the slinky and hypnotising tech house cut "Somus" powered by its ethereal melody and razor sharp bassline. Ending with the powerful peak time cut "Retox" with its adrenalised arpeggio that takes it all the way home.

Review: Berlin tech house heroes Booka Shade deliver their new EP for John Digweed's Bedrock imprint this November, featuring three electrifying cuts. The Blaufield Music founders Booka Shade have long been respected figures in the contemporary electronic music scene, having racked up a handful of crossover cuts amongst their regular output aimed towards more underground realms - here we see them focusing on the latter. "Rosebud" sees them employ their idiosyncratic style of melodic and emotional groove, while the hypnotic and entracing "Lust 2.1" allows for more introverted moments under the strobelight. Finally, they lunge straight for the jugular on the moody and epic dancefloor drama of "Velvet".

Review: It's been 12 years since M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade broke through with "Body Language", a single that did much to define to Berlin tech-house sound of the period. Here, Madrid-based producer and Infamous Recordings label boss Danniel Selfmade gets a chance to re-build the much-loved Get Physical classic in his own image. There's much to admire about his Infamous version, which wraps the original's bouncy, tactile synthesizer motifs and undulating synth-bass around a proto-house era drum machine rhythm. In some ways, a feels a little like a long lost Metro Area track, which is no bad thing. The accompanying Dub is an altogether chunkier and more tech-tinged proposition, though it does still showcase the original synth parts in between blasts of heads-down groove theory.

Review: The latest release on Hot Since 82's label comes from German duo Booka Shade. On this occasion, the pioneers of the 'trance house' sound turn the controls over to the remixers - with excellent results. French producer Olivier Mateu, aka Rodriguez Jr is best known for his releases on Mobilee and follows a similar approach to that work here. A pulsing, hypnotic groove and crisp drums provide the backdrop for a velvety vocal that rises like plumes of smoke over the arrangement. At the other end of the spectrum is the Denneyas ERD remix. More steely and driving, it still features evocative vocal lines like 'I tremble, you falter', but these breathy niceties are aligned to detuned but catchy hooks that recall Booka Shade's own sound.

Review: Berlin undisputed legends recruit Nottingham based vocalist on "Neon Gods", a sublime serving of pop-inflected tech house for late night superclub dancefloors courtesy of Hot Since '82's Knee Deep In Sound powerhouse. The original version is a dark and sleazy kind of groove for 6 AM hedonism with a rough and gutsy bassline and it's this version which is used for the dub. The "Vocal" mix has that famous Booka Shade bassline over some dark, moody and epic synth work for added suspense. This is one of those dark journey tracks you need for added pre-peak time impact. There's a convenient "Radio" edit too which effectively distils the essence of the track into three minutes.

Review: Wherein Kaiserdisco gets to grips with music from some of house music's biggest names and emerge smiling. The take on Steve Lawler's "Distrait" is classic Kaiserdisco, with heavy bongo drums leading into shaking percussion and later on a dramatic, string-led breakdown. Meanwhile, the take on Dualton's "Face Off" is slightly more understated, with stripped back, minimal rhythms underpinning insistent vocal sampling and an infectious disco filter. But the killer remix here is the re-rub of Booka Shade and label owner Marc Romboy's "Every Day In My Life". Over tribal beats and a huge filter, an unnamed woman sings the catchy refrain "I got something for your mind, your body and your soul /every day of my life". It's the kind of vocal refrain that will seduce even the most hardened purist.
