Borka & The Gang

Borka & The Gang

Boris Graus aka Borka & The Gang, is an electronic music producer from Hanover, Germany. At the end of the 90's he started to produce electronic music in different genres. Today, Borka and his gang of different musicians focus mainly on house and breakbeat, although he likes to bring in influences from jazz, funk and world music. His style is characterized by driving beats and basslines with many deep elements and emotional melodies. Borka's first release "Try" was in 2013 on Oliver Koletzki's label "Light My Fire" who received strong support in the scene. Since then he has had numerous releases on labels such as Apparel Music, Heideton, der Turnbeutel, trndmsk, theBasement Discos, Dobro and many more. In 2020, Borka and Joe Metzenmacher released their track "Magic Talk" on Sven Väth's label "Cocoon". Borka collaborated and remixed artists like Timo Maas, Oliver Schories, Kathy Brown, Greentea Peng and many more.

Review: We don't know much about Borka & The Gang, other than knowing that the artist has been releasing music sporadically for a few years and recently featured on the fourth volume in the excellent DOBRO Tape series. This EP, the first Borka and company collection for DOBRO, is full to bursting with sonically attractive, sun-soaked treats. Check first the hybrid disco/deep house/jazz flex of 'Need You', before exploring the blunted hip-hop samples, drowsy jazz loops and shuffling deep house grooves of 'Want That' and the squelchy nu-disco-goes-piano house excellence of 'Wings of Happiness'. Elsewhere, 'Wizard of Change' is a jazzy and bumpin' deep house jam of the sort that Derrick Carter was once renowned for playing, while 'Jazz Mutation' is an energetic, sweat-soaked pumper smothered in killer jazz samples.

Review: DOBRO's 'Tape' series of compilations is always worth checking, in part because the imprint uses it as a vehicle to showcase an eclectic mix of productions from new artists, rising stars and label regulars. Predictably, volume four in the series is another doozy, with plenty of hits and very few misses. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the hard-to-pigeonhole sample-house brilliance of Eloi's 'Life Is a Long Fleuve Tranquille', the tactile deep house warmth of Will Buck's 'Fine China', the languid Balearic disco bagginess of Mandalus's 'Come Closer', the synth-heavy squelch of Adham Zahran's 'Walking With You', the two step-goes-jazz-funk flex of Fred Aster's 'Strung Out', and the throbbing Italo-disco-goes-Hi-NRG pulse of 'The Happiest Track' by DJYesyes.
