Review: British vocalist Ali Love (of Hot Natured fame) teamed up with Nicky Night Time and acclaimed Frenchman Breakbot on the low slung disco joint "Ubiquity" earlier this year, where he delivered his typically smooth-as-silk vocal delivery over a smooth groove - with an undeniably 'French Touch'. They are all back together again on Los Angeles-based label Music To Dance To with this hot remix package that is equally as worthy of your attention. Highlights come from the ever reliable Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan (Rub 'N' Tug), who takes the track into infectious nu-disco territory, while the label's hometown hero Lubelski delivers a sensual late night mood music rendition.
Review: Back in 2016, Ed Banger main man and nu-rave scene stalwart Pedro Winter AKA Busy P delivered a particularly excitable DJ mix that was affixed to the front of copies of Mixmag. Now the long-running magazine has decided to make it available as a paid-for download, with a big chunk of sales revenue going to the producers and remixers who feature. It remains a hugely entertaining excursion, with Winter quickly charging between glassy-eyed synth-pop (Breakbot, as remixed by Fatima Yamaha), mangled electro-pop cheeriness (Justice), contemporary French house (Mr Oizo, Cassius and Pharrell Williams), cowbell-sporting acid house revivalism (Playgroup, Kiddy Smile), Middle Eastern headiness (Acid Arab), and the raw Sheffield sleaze of Crooked Man.
Review: No one does contemporary disco like Dimitri From Paris. And no one has the compilation licensing clout like Defected. Naturally this is a match made in glitterball heaven as DFP spans 40 years of grooves with a spotless collection of his own edits and upfront jams. Ranging from his own twists on standard disco gems such as "Le Freak" and "Lost In Music" to the likes of Disclosure's "F For You" and Todd Terje's "Delorean Dynamite" this is, without question, one of Defected's most extensive, expansive and exciting collections to date - which really is saying something. A natural fit for all house, disco and funk fans young and old.
Review: With its touchy-feely pianos, baggy disco shuffle and hazy, blue-eyed soul vibe, "You Should Know" has all the makings of a summer radio hit. It's the sort of thing we've come to expect from Breakbot, but it is also arguably one of his best singles to date. Predictably, it comes with a bulging remix package. There's a tasty, decidedly looser Alternate Take, a pleasingly analogue, early house-influenced rework from Busy P & Boston Bun, and a jaunty piano house tweak from Homework Le Bain. If that wasn't enough, The Swiss turn it into a wide-eyed Ibizan anthem. Good stuff, all told.
Review: Their first label compilation since 2008, Busy P rallies up his talented troops for a collection of exclusive tracks to celebrate a decade of electro excellence. And we mean excellence. Each cut sparkles with its maker's idiosyncrasies; Krazy Baldhead lays down his most textured cosmic melodies, Busy P gets sleazy and old school Chicago with Thunderbird Gerard, Justice give their star-gazing air-guitar basher a truly majestic rework and Oizo gets his slo-mo hammer on with some gorgeous jacking de-pitched synth stabs. There's loads more to chew on here, and not a dull moment throughout. Here's to another decade.
