Having already teased us with the loose subby swagger of 'Aloose' and the high frequency fire of 'Trench', the EP is now complete with two more unruly late night uppercuts: the dramatic arpeggios and eerie tension of 'Grim Reaper' and the neck-snap steppery of 'Cuffed'. Featuring cuts from all previous X instalments, plus the extras that all landed in the last few weeks, the 27-track strong set is a great snapshot of where both the label and underground drum & bass is at right now. If you're into that deep dark rumbling minimal futurist vibe then every track is a highlight but essentials include Visages immense 'Polarity Code', Sili's precision springer 'Gallop', the cosmic twisted synths of Wingz's 'Broken Path' and Wreckless's tense and sobering 'Don't Want To Forget How Your Voice Sounds'. Review: Alix Perez's 1985 sets the bar again... Edition 3 is another instalment of their spotless V/A series which covers the label's broad range of shades. This one is a game of two halves as the first five tracks flex around the 140 region with crucial slabs from Halogenix's Lordel alias and dubstep men of the moment Ternion Sound. Meanwhile the second half flips to D&B with a whole clutch of impressive designs; Visages' "Memories" is a mournful stepper, Bredren get bad-ass with the thumpy, bumpy "Only One", Machinedrum brings some outstanding soul on "Braided Leaves" and Perez delivers three of his finest. Bring on Edition 4.

Review: Brussels mandem Bredren get all arsonist with this scorching EP debut for Alix Perez's 1985. Four tracks, each one a flamer, we kick off with the forthright headbutt of "Inferno" where T Man holds court with savage bars. Deeper into the EP we hit their classic stripped back rolling sound on "Get Physical" before "Flick Knife" cuts straight to the chase with some sinewy, creepy low end flourishes. Last but not least "Undress" gets everyone naked with some beautiful light-at-end-of-tunnel barbed soul. Four out of four, Bredren are firing right now.

Review: 1985 Music was founded by Alix Perez a year or two ago and, since then, has rapidly become one of the premier destinations for forward-thinking sonics that inhabit the 85-170bpm spectrum. With a fresh roster including Monty, Submarine and Perez himself, Edition 2 is a showcase of both the producers and sounds that Alix has in his orbit. There are too many outstanding tracks to recount here, but 'Drones' by Cesco stands out as one of the most creative: a subby, stepping halftime cut with an ingenious drum pattern. There's weighty rollers, too, including 'Swayed' by Bredren and 'Good To Me' by Perez and Monty, both of which are sublime examples in minimal construction. A truly sick collection of tracks.

Review: Belgian badmen Bredren have yet to put a step wrong this year. Following two iced-packed machine funk drillers on Demand and Dispatch comes this incredible four-track barbed soul attack. It kicks off with "Line Art", a stepper so stark and sharp it could cut through concrete. "City Clan" is a twisted 22nd century dancehall shaker with a hook characterised by high voltage distorted sinewy bleeps while "Whose Rights" takes the sense-shattering signature to a whole new level with a punch that could easily be compared to Skeptical or, when it comes to the bullcharge drums on the fills, Blocks & Escher. Finally we have "Hemlock", a lean mean stepper garnished with just the right amount of stripped back creepy elements. Headlock.

Review: Proudly releasing their first EP, Rotterdam based outfit Blendits have convinced Chromatic, Bredren, Philth and J Daur to hand over their tunes. Thank god they did. Chromatic's "Inertia" bursts into life with a layer of sci fi bleeps and effects before launching head first into a full-scale bass attack. "Ghost Palace" is the shared nightmare of bass chums Bredren and Philth, who are pure dirt separately and together... it's difficult to say. The bass removed any metaphorical ability. "Le Tricolore" is a soulful, jazzy float through liquid vibes and caramel bass and "Passing Period" brings out the experimental side of Bredren, featuring some beautiful sound design touches and emotive vocals from Janna Salhoume. Showstopper.
