Review: Not be confused with Nang disco veterans Kim & Buran, Buran are the Manchester duo of Ian Scott and Josef Wretham, and on this four-track EP for Insult To Injury they showcase a sound that sits somewhere between acid house, dark disco and techno, with analogue synths firmly at the heart of all they do. The first track, 'Alnitak', is a pure vintage-style acid workout, before things get a little more esoteric as 'Alnilam' throws world music influences into the pot. 'Mintaka' then pushes us firmly into techno territory, with Void Complet rounding out the EP by giving 'Alnitak' a spaced-out nu-disco makeover.
Review: Ian Scott and Josef Wretham aka Buran is the latest act to trip the light fantastic on Amsterdam label Night Noise. Taking inspiration from 90s artists like Emannuel Top, the Manchester duo delivers a four-track EP that is equal parts acid, trance and techno. This seamless fusion is most audible on the title track, where liquid 303s and swirling synths unravel over a pulsating groove. "Hissy Fit" revolves around the interplay between gently building melodies and grainy 303s, while on "Goat Locker" the sound is more stripped back, with Buran starting off with a stripped back groove that morphs into an acidic climax. Oli Warriner's tougher, more tracky take on "Grid Squares" rounds out the release.
Review: The St Petersburg-based duo of Slava Zavyalov and Roman Tolmachev, better known to disco buyers as Kim/Buran, bring us what is their 10th long-player and, to these ears, their finest work to date. Coming (like 2016's 'Orbita') on the mighty Nang Records, 'Tramplin' opens with the dreamy and aptly-titled 'Walk On The Stratosphere!' and ends with the similarly drifty 'Your Summer Dress'; in-between you'll find 12 more synth-y nu-disco gems that draw heavily on Italo, space disco and Balearic tropes, all blended together to create a 67-minute listening experience that's as well suited to horizontal herbalism as it is to dancefloor fun and frolics.
