Review: London lad Tom Lilly AKA Bustin' Loose ropes in a few chums and together they bust out four fine slabs of contemporary disco and disco-house. Opener 'Paradise' (credited to Bustin' Loose & Magnolia ft Catalina) sports a great female vocal that has just enough "fry" to sound current but, crucially, not so much that it sounds like a talent show wannabe, Soundsmith collab 'Party People' is a more urgent and eyes-down roller with sparkling vibes and a "party people come on" vocal loop, solo outing 'Marlena' rocks jazz-funk guitar and a dreamy "always remember" vocal snip and finally Pete Maxey and Elliot Chapman get on board for 'All My Love', a slightly mellower, more soulful jam. Good stuff all round.

Review: The Disco Express's 'Best of the B-Sides' compilations are based on a simple premise, namely showcasing remixes and bonus cuts from the catalogue that you may have missed. There are naturally gems aplenty to be found scattered across the compilation, from the infectious Latin-disco percussion, warming Rhodes riffs and deliciously soulful vocals of John Morales' remix of Magnolia & Elliot Chapman's 'Deep Inside My Soul', and the dubby tropical disco shuffle of Tigerbalm's remix of Cliff Colada's 'Souffle Monday', to Young Pulse's hybrid disco-boogie take on Barbara Tucker and Sam Carlson's 'Miracles', and the revivalist disco-funk-goes-house flex of Generoco's 'The Express'.

Review: The Disco Express label puts out quite a bit of music, so this round-up of 2022 label highlights is not only very welcome but all so an essential purchase. Art of Tones provides two of the highlights as the featured remixer: a rubbery, effortlessly funky, mid-tempo disco-house re-fix of Pete Maxey's 'Right On', and a looser, more organic and horn-heavy 'discoid' house tweak of Monsieur Von Pratt's 'The Power of Music'. Elsewhere across the EP, look out for the smoother, string-laden disco-house funk of HiFi Sean's re-wire of Bustin' Loose's 'Swift Lippin'; the bouncy, revivalist disco sweetness that is Aroop Roy's revision of Leslie Lello's 'Spirito Rivera' and the driving, sweat-soaked delights of the DAN:RO rework of Sparkling Attitude's 'Disco Delights', which boasts the twin treats of funky bass guitar and storming piano riffs.

Review: The Disco Express presents a four-track remix collection in which Art Of Tones reshape Pete Maxey's 'Right On' from last year's 'Tough Love' V/A EP, George Cynnamon takes on 'Satin Lovers' from Tuesday Brunch's 'London To Sydney' EP and Phonk D and Parisian Soul rework a cut each from July's 'Iridesence' EP. The sheer quality of Vanessa Jackson's jazzy female vocal on 'Blue Diamond' ensures it takes the gold once more, but Phonk D's strutty, bass-y take on 'Sugar Rush' is also very deserving of your attention, particularly if you have a soft spot for mid-90s disco-house.

Review: Musically, 'Blue Diamond' can be seen as either an uptempo disco/soul stomper, or a very disco-influenced house cut - it doesn't really matter because in any case it's the distinctive vocal from Vanessa Jackson that makes it. Her jazzual styling lends this a classy feel that's vaguely redolent of Lucy Pearl's classic 'Without You', while the falsetto counterpoint adds a certain Scissor Sisters-y edge: the end result is a track that hits the elusive "commericial yet credible" bullseye right in the middle! There are vocal and instrumental rubs to choose from, while the After Hours Mix strips things back and takes us into more late-night, blissed-out territory.

Review: Austin's Silver Rider returns to Whiskey Disco with his fourth split EP for the label, this time in cahoots with South London oppo Bustin' Loose. The pair contribute two re-edits apiece, though sadly the only source we can identify is Skyy's 'First Time Around' (1979), which forms the basis for 'Roundhouse'. Elsewhere, 'You're The One' bites an unidentified, male-voiced 80s soul/boogie jam, 'Those Ol' Days' is a laidback funk-soul groove with a "one thing" female vocal loop while 'Home Way Phase' is more energetic and rocks another looped female vocal ("my past experience has taught me what I know now").

Review: Having started life in 2017 as a regular party at Shoreditch Platform in London, the Disco Express has now spawned an offshoot record label focused on heavyweight ready re-edits. The label's inaugural Disco Ride is a thrill-a-minute excursion packed to the rafters with playable, peak-time ready goodness, with highlights including the hard-wired disco-funk bounce of 'Ngi' by SDS, where sharp strings and hazy male vocal snippets rise above a stomping, low-slung groove, and the soaring, string-laden rush of Soundsmith's 'Disco Ride', which brilliantly sets the tone up top. Elsewhere, party and label founder Bustin' Loose chips in with the swirling and hazy, mid-tempo goodness of 'Can You Feel It?' and Pete Maxey adds sharp nu-disco synths to a deep disco-tech groove ('For the Love of Music').
