Review: Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX marks the second electrifying compilation from Eskimo Recordings, masterfully curated by Berlin-based musician and DJ Luca Venezia, aka Curses. Spanning some 50 tracks - this extensive collection weaves a captivating narrative connecting the dots between industrial pioneers like Throbbing Gristle, EBM legends Nitzer Ebb, and the post-punk experimentation of Malcolm McLaren or Big Audio Dynamite, all the while introducing us to contemporary talents such as Boy Harsher, Nuovo Testamento, and Years of Denial. With direct inspirations coming from personal voyages through Luca Venezia's record collection during lockdown - DEUX transports us through a hazy, pulsating clubland from yesteryear where a sonic journey pulls together other talent like The KVB, Jennifer Touch, Kris Baha and a selections of Curses own remixes and revamps.

Review: Ed Cartwright and Leon Oakey's first collaborative compilation is one of the few we've come across to eschew a narrow focus on one genre or style in favour of celebrating an under-documented era, namely UK dance music's eclectic, impossible to pigeonhole 'post-rave' period in the mid 1990s. Given that lots of great music was released then, it's a great idea. The tracklist boasts a lot of very good cuts, including a near impossible to find Richard D James oddity (as Strider B), a couple of killer Richard H Kirk-related numbers, some stretched-out, acid-fired early morning psychedelia (Thunderhead The Word By Eden), classic IDM gems (Xeper, the Black Dog), a dash of dubby, post-bleep brilliance (Liquid Son, Rotor) and a clutch of hybrid deep house/tech-house tracks (Max, Fretless AZM, Herbert).

Review: With the renewed attention surrounding industrial and EBM in the last few years (and its influence on techno, again), it's important that someone with credentials gives the new generation a decent history lesson. Fitting that Berghain resident and MDR boss Marcel Dettmann curates a compilation of classics from the sound's heyday: here's someone who actually lived through it. As part of Amsterdam imprint Dekmantel's Selectors Series, these gems from yesteryear should certainly set the record straight and provide solid reference points for new school retroverts. Highlights (and there's many) include: Belgian EBM legends Front 242 with "Don't Crash", Philadelphia industrial underdogs Executive Slacks' "So Mote It Be" and the mandatory Cabs track comes in the form of "Low Cool" (the Marcel Dettmann Edit, no less). It wouldn't be a proper industrial comp without a bit of Wax Trax! would it? Label staples Ministry appear with their 1982 song "Same Old Madness", a period in the band's history that some consider their finest.

Review: Belgium's Sub Rosa come through with their seventh edition of their mighty noise and electronic compilation and as per usual, it contains just about every sort of style and genre within the electronic domain, handsomely packed in a 39 track format. These editions have always been great for people who have either owned these records on vinyl or tape and want to listen to them with ease, or for the ones who wish to gain some insight into the history of noise, drone and beyond. Of course, the seventh edition is ridden with both classics and obscurities, such as Mika Vainio's "Transformer 7" - one of the man's craziest pieces - and we praise Sub Rosa once again for their gorgeous efforts.
