Review: The latest split release on COD3 QR is a wonderfully diverse affair. At the house end of the spectrum there's the rolling tribal beats of Labat's "Redlights", while Nic As Well impresses with the break beat-led "Nacaduct". Soulful sounds also prevail on "Sump Dub", where storied producer Calibre delivers a sensuous broken beat track. A COD3 QR compilation wouldn't be complete without echoes of Detroit. On this occasion, this sound comes in the shape of Madben's cinematic breaker "The Mightiest Galaxy" and Deetron's peak-time "Pulse". Staying in the dance floor lane, Volume 2 also features contributions from veteran producers Marco Bailey and Oliver Way & Dany Rodriguez, who deliver soaring, bass-heavy bangers
Review: Like label owner Laurent Garnier's DJing, the latest compilation on COD3 QR spans a range of styles. It encompasses sounds as diverse as the jazzy piano and gentle back beats of Carlos Nilmmns' "Just Another Day" and the intense white noise bursts and slamming techno of Manuel M's "Take". Other familiar, Garnier-approved styles also make the cut. There's the dramatic, soaring Detroit techno of Jim Rivers' "Canna" and Costello's "Dream Operator", while Alex Rotschild delivers sassy tech-house on "Cosmorak". Of course no release on the French DJ's imprint would be complete without a curveball; this time it comes in the form of Onur Ozman's moody vocal-led contribution, "If U Want".
Review: If you like house and techno with an ethereal aesthetic, then Aquanauts Holiday is for you. At times, Nilmmns reaches the depth that the release's title implies. In particular, "When It's All Over" is a gloriously melancholic track. Led by an offbeat groove, it explores the sub-aquatic synth sounds of Drexciya and early UR. In contrast, "Abyss" provides a glimpse into a more turbulent world, where visceral bass and layered percussion sound track the descent down the rabbit hole. It's only a temporary pitstop though. "Explorer" sees Nilmmns drop a churning bass that acts as the backdrop for soaring, atmospheric synths.
Review: The latest split release on Scan X and Laurent Garnier's label features a mixture of established artists. Carlos Nilmmns' "True People" is a sublime deep house track, led by jazzy keys and organic drums. Veteran techno producer Marco Bailey also makes an appearance. As you'd expect from the Belgian powerhouse, "Full Steam" is led by a brooding bass and building, dramatic synths, making for a powerful techno track. Newer artists include Jules Wells, who delivers an uplifting, piano-led house track with "Dreamer"- and Lois, whose "Fire" is a moody, dub techno track. Joaquim Plossu, who had appeared on a previous label compilation, returns to COD3 QR with the slow-paced "Geologist Dub".
Review: Laurent Garnier, Scan X, and Oliver Way's COD3 QR label remains fresh as ever with a new various artist release that brings eleven hand picked cuts from the likes of Bel Air Ltd., Tal Fussman and Jules Wells to Alex Troniq, Fanu, Voltaire, Carlos Nilmmns and Inner Ray! Lead cut "City Lights" kicks off with some deep and melancholic bassline house next to some moody techno reminiscent of early Ben Klock in "10247". "The Clap" delivers some footwork inspirations next to some spookier electro wares in "Neophile" - banging. "Pisecean" gets all breakbeat and new age in the mix alongside some warehouse techno in "Regular Disturbances" alongside some melodic 'Mathew Johnson' inspired sounds in "Old Paris". Closing out the EP is "What" - a British Murder Boys-esque slice of Middle Eastern themed gothic EBM.
Review: More mysterious music from Laurent Garnier and Scan X's COD3 QR label. In keeping with the imprint's house style, the identities of the producers who have contributed tracks to this expansive, multi-artist extravaganza have been replaced by oblique code numbers. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the collaborative 'Last Night', where part spoken, part sung vocals rub shoulders with alien-sounding synth motifs and classic US house tropes atop a snappy deep house groove, and the piano-sporting deep techno-goes-deep house wonder of 'No Way' (another joint effort) to the breathless, Rex Club-friendly techno heaviness of 'Dealing With Loneliness' and the warming ambient jazz-meets-nu-jazz swell of 'For Gwen'.
Review: Swiss deep house hero Ripperton leads the way on this split 12" from Character. "I'm Gonna Make You Love" is trippy, dreamy and epic deep house smothered in layers of mesmerising strings and pads and some soulful male house vocals. Detroit legend Niko Marks is back too it seems; he's teamed up with Carlos Nillmns on "The Night Not To End" featuring the the thought provoking spoken word poetry of Keter Darker (the new Gil Scott Heron some Chicagoans say!) over a seriously dusty deep house jam. They also offer us "Dark Ages" which goes for the classic, late nineties filtered disco house vibe.. and done damn well!
Review: New project from the renowned Smugglers Inn radio podcast on the "myhouseyourhouse" web radio station! Run by none other than Red Rack'em, the man has put together four seriously talented house producers to represent the show's global aesthetic. Deep house talent Carlos Nilmmns kicks things into motion with "N'oublions Pas", a disco-filtered bass line driving some incredibly shuffling percussion; while Tommy Rawson takes things down a notch on "Shy Track", hypnotising vocals treading wearily beneath gorgeous chords. Franklin De Costa's part comes in the form of a monstrous 303-reminiscent hymn, the aptly named "Acid Test Bass", making this one a true dance floor burner and leading the way for Ajukaja's "Slim Ja Part" to ties things off in style - soft drums and chi-town melodies taking us deeper and deeper into the Smugglers Inn world.
