BPitch Control Volume 3 - House

Review: As its title suggests, the latest compilation on Bpitch gives vent to the label's deeper side. It begins with Chaim's "Rain", where jazzy textures bubble to the surface over dubby beats. The track has an ethereal, almost subdued feeling to it and is in stark contrast to the raucous minimalism that Bpitch is sometimes associated with. This understated approach isn't confined to Chaim's contribution however; even more dance floor tracks like the pumping bass of Cormac's "The Present" are teeming with emotive undercurrents and Kassem Mosse's version of Ellen Alien's "Our Utopie" sees a series of chiming bells prevail over a pumping groove.

Love Kills!
Review: It's a trans-continental collaboration as Finland's Kiki and Israel's Chaim question the effects of love. Ably assisted by vocalist Cari Golden, the duo return to the early 90s for influence with a pumping house groove, replete with old school keys and hardcore-evocative bells underpinning Golden's observation that 'love don't pay the rent'. Such existential considerations are put aside on "Clap II Thizz", a rolling groove littered with urgent, squealing saxophones and stuttering vocal snippets. But the remixes do revisit the theme: Chaim's version offers an esoteric feeling with the vocals sounding ghostly and detached, while Kiki's take is more ominous as building chords support Golden's contention that "we ain't got no flame".

Robots On Meth
Review: Astral-slanted electro-tech joy from Israel's Chaim on this new release, with the seductive post-acid bite of "Levantina" and the chiming keys and The Cure-like bassline of "Robots of Meth" proving real treats. Remixes of the latter tune by David K Benzona add a bubbly and effusive Chicago flavour whilst keeping the creeping intensity locked in.

Review: "100 years ago I had a dream: release music I love, with pro graphics, without going bankrupt". Trust Tiga to give a great soundbite for his label's four-part retrospective, part two of which drops this week. Covering 2005-2008, some stone cold electro and techno classics reside herein: Tomas Barfod's criminally underrated wonky-tech beauty "Saturdaya" and early tunes from Boys Noize (the untypically subdued "Haldern"), Proxy, Dim and Duke Dumont's Debbie Deb-sampling "When I Hear Mu'sic". With Justice's mighty take on ZZT's "Lower State of Consciousness" also here, this is a perfect collection for die-hards and casual Turbo listeners alike.

Alive
Played by: Noir, Coyu
Review: In Chaim, Israel boasts a producer of genuine flair, quality and innovation. Alive, his debut album for long time employers Bpitch Control, is the equal to anything from Berlin, London or New York. What's more, there's a distinctive shuffle and melodic warmth that gives it real emotional resonance. This is electronic music that appeals beyond the confines of club dancefloors - it has that kind of timeless, far-sighted vibe that makes it a wonderful listen from start to finish. First and foremost, then, Alive is a proper album, with songs ("Wish", "Alive"), jolly instrumentals ("Popsky"), musical experiments (the strange pop-rock of "Robots On Meth") and stone-cold hits (the celebrated dream-like synth pop of "Love Rehab" and grandiose dancefloor throb of "U & Eye" and "Runaway Frequencies"). It gathers together diverse influences - synth-pop, German house and techno, nu-disco, ambient, even nu-jazz - and weaves them into something new and fresh. It's beguiling, bewitching and, most of all, beautiful. Don't miss out.

Werkschau
Various
Review: If two years ago you'd said to even the most open-minded BPitch Control fan that the diverse label would be putting out soulful torch songs in 2011, they would have questioned your sanity. However, that's exactly what's happened. On Werkschau, the latest compilation from Ellen Allien's Berlin imprint, the centrepiece is the smoky, seductive soul of Jahcoozi's "Day In, Day Out". It's not an aberration: the other highlights here are characterised by a focus on deeply personal contributions. Be it the muffled vocals on Chaim's dub techno, Sascha Funke's unforgettably melodic techno poem, "Hiddensee" or Kiki & Lenz and Zander VT's explorations of disco-fuelled, vocal-led house on "Morning Maniacs" and "Gotta Look Up To Get Down" respectively, every shared experience is worth its weight in gold.
