Review: It may have been a pretty rubbish year in general, but Midnight Riot has done its best to keep us entertained via a wealth of disco and boogie-centric EPs. If you missed out on many of the label's 2020 treats, don't worry, because they've gathered together the best of their recent output on this epic compilation. Drawing on original nu-disco, revivalist disco, feel-good house, synth-heavy boogie sounds and gently tooled-up edits, highlights are predictably plentiful. Our picks include the summery soulful house goodness of 'Nothing But the Music (Hotevilla Mix)' by Platinum City, the nu-boogie brilliance of Qwestlife's remix of 'Savage' by Tommy Glasses, the loopy disco-house joy of Mottes 'The Horse Ride' and Yam Who's 'Full Vocal Mix' of Sam Shelley's sunshine disco number 'Groove It'.

Review: First out on the 'Disco Made Me Do It Vol 3' comp back in June, this cut from French producer Chevals returns in Extended Mix form courtesy of UK scene legend Michael Gray (Hustler's Convention, Full Intention, Pearn & Gray, etc). Several lines from Janet Jackson's 'Pleasure Principle' provide the vocal, which sits atop crisp drums, a big fat, squelchy bassline and synths lifted from the original. There's a lot more invention and imagination gone into this track than your average "just whack a 4/4 kick under it!" shonky bootleg/re-edit, but it's still the Janet bites that carry it - particularly the subtle hint of that infamous, spine-tingling wail.

Review: French producer Chevals touches on a range of musical styles on this EP for Midnight Riot. Of the four cuts featured, 'Mindbuster' itself is that which sits most comfortably under the 'nu disco' umbrella, while 'I Wanna Be Next To You' fuses elements of disco, funk and house into a languid, sundown-friendly groove. 'Thank You For The Ride' has an 80s-ish feel - and more specifically, a distinct Janet Jackson-esque flava - and finally 'Can't Keep On Lovin' You' is very similar in spirit to the R&B-tinged deep/soulful house that Om used to specialise in, with hints of Daft Punk in the bassline.

Review: When it comes to celebratory, life-affirming musical positivity, you can't beat Midnight Riot's ongoing "Disco Made Me Do It" compilation series, which gathers together a mixture of re-edits, reworks and original productions from the label's vast roster of artists. At 24 tracks deep it's a bit of an epic, though we can happily confirm that the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout. Our current favourites include the Redux Inc re-edit of Casa Blanco's P-funk flavoured hip-wiggler, "Funk & Dub With You", the rushing, piano-powered house bounce of "Got Me" by Ladies on Mars, label boss Yam Who's sparkling nu-boogie revision of Phil Jaimes' "My Sensitivity" and the deep, groovy '80s soul flex of Chevals' "Thank You For The Ride".

Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

Review: Going by the volume of tracks on show, it would be fair to say that Masterworks Music's "Bag of Tricks" is not a little handbag, but more like a Mary Poppins style bottomless carpetbag. The label's latest rummage through its seemingly endless contents has been a successful one, with the 20 showcased cuts including a wealth of fine fusions of disco, house, boogie, electro and 80s soul. It's uniformly dancefloor-focused, with highlights including the Afro-house/disco-tech fusion of JB Dizzy, the driving, spaced-out disco-house grooves of Mike Woods, the loose-limbed, off-the-wall edits of Chewy Rubs, the sweet disco-soul bounce of RocknRolla Soundsystem, the delay-laden synth sing-along styles of Rayko and the hot-to-trot brilliance of Downunder Disco.

Review: Since first tickling our fancy with a killer EP on Better Listen, Chevals has gone on to release similarly impressive outings on Whiskey Disco, Kolour Ltd and Masterworks Music. Here the fast-rising French producer makes his Editorial bow with another fine four-track salvo of beefed-up, house style re-edits. He hits the ground running with "Left Behind", a glassy-eyed loop jam that layers slightly sped-up soul/R&B vocals onto a mid-tempo '80s soul groove. Elsewhere, he delivers a house style revision of a summery jazz-funk number on "I Of Love", while EP closer "Time" is sumptuous, bass-heavy, heady and loved-up in the best possible way.

Review: Should you have missed his previous EPs on Better Listen, Kolour and Editorial - amongst others - you may still be blissfully unaware of Chevals, a self-styled "French house producer, disco cutter and horse". Should that be the case, we suggest that you check out this fine four-tracker - his first for Masterworks Music - as soon as possible. It begins with a fantastic slab of gospel-powered disco house (the peak-time stomp of "My Feet Keep Changing") and ends with a throbbing club cut rich in fizzing P-funk synths, bumpin' beats and purple-tinted electronics ("Love Somebody"). In between, you'll find a deliciously jaunty, horn-rich mid-tempo jam ("This Time Is Dedicated To Love") and a hybrid remix/re-edit of a smooth '80s soul cut ("Never Will I Leave You Baby"). Insatiable stuff.
